Default unlocking the HTC Sensation 4G?

I have T-Mobile and I would like to go to another carrier. Do I need to root the phone or do I just need to unlock it and get another Sim Card for it? Please help me out with this, I am extremely illiterate with this kind of thing. I would be SO greatful for any information given. Thanks in advance. =)
