In preparation for this can anyone tell me how I find out if my phone is branded or not as this naturally will effect if I do actually get ics in march or not. I have nothing on the phone that suggests it is...no splash screen,no network branded apps etc, but I did get the phone from tmobile which makes me assume it probably is....it would be great to find out for sure.
I'd like to find this out too. I think mine is unbranded as it came from E2Save (part of the Carphone Warehouse) and when setting it up for the first time I had to pick which network I was on from a long list of alternatives. OP did you have to do this?

Well if this is the case I'm unbranded. Strange as I upgraded direct with tmobile and I assumed they would have branded it...I'm not complaining mind. I had to wait time for froyo on my old desire. Ics bring it on.
Yes, I've got 401 in the middle too, so it appears I'm unbranded. I'm not surprised though - Carphone Warehouse phones are usually unbranded and unlocked. Can't wait for the update!

ICS OTA update live in DK
As we speak I am installing the official Android 4.0 update on my XE. Can't wait to try it out! But check your phones, it might be ready for you too.
I'm on an unbranded XE in Denmark.
Edit: Now running Android version 4.0.3, software number 3.32.401.105, Sense version 3.6
Update: I haven't had time to play around with it too much, but I have noticed that it is remarkably faster when scrolling and using programs. Plus Google Chrome can be installed (no experience with that yet). The classic Sense icons for phone/apps at the bottom of the home screen have changed - see screenshot. Settings menu has also changed.
Other than that, I haven't gotten any further in finding out what is new.
The data usage function in "Settings" is very, very cool.

Quite looking forward to the new update. I actually really like the Roboto font, think its great. I've only just got my Sensation XE so the OS I am currently using is new to me.
I got it the other day also, phone is quicker and now you can edit how many home screens you want to have 7 is to many for me, so I am using my usual 3 no longer stuck with the crippled Sense menu bar it is gone in favor for the more Samsung style. All in all seems to be a bit of a leap forward imo, although I have restarted my phone about 4 times now and eveytime it updates some services 33, 33 again then 30 now 28 :roll eyes: never mind though, it is a better unit due to this update. I was close to changing mine for an iPhone 4S, but I think I shall keep it for a month or so and see how it goes.
Haddock? What "Power control" widget is that? Cheers.

My power control widget is SwitchPro Widget, an awesome little widget, with tons of customization options. The only thing that bothers me with it (now) is that the GPS button doesn't seem to work with ICS. I think this may be the phone's fault though, because unless I have selected "Use GPS Location" in the Locations bar in Settings, I can't use my GPS(and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case before?).
I'm not to thrilled about that, since I don't want all apps to use GPS whenever they feel like it. If I haven't selected that option, my Tasker profile, which turns GPS on/off with specific apps, doesn't work either. So I don't quite know how to get around that, or even if it will prove to be a big battery drainer.
Still liking ICS though! Fast and good looking. But it does seem that GOSms Pro can't retrieve contact photos anymore, but I'll grab the dev and see if he can fix that. I really like the fact that you can delete unused panes on your homescreen too, since 7 is a bit over the top for what I need.
The Quick Settings option on the drag down bar is a nice touch too, but it would be even nicer if you could edit that, to put in you own options. Specifically GPS toggle, but it seems that that is gone completely???
I'm looking forward to hearing what other people find out about what's new, since I haven't had too much time to figure out what's up.
EDIT: I have just re-started my phone three times to see if it stopped saying "Android is Upgrading - updating application x of xx", and it doesn't... It's the same number of apps that it "updates" each time, so this looks like another flaw... Grrr...

I find myself checking every bloody morning when I know its pointless..
People are expecting it at the end of this month but as we have seen in the post above the upgrade is not perfect. I imagine this if anything will add a few more days/weeks to the UK's OTA update as HTC will almost definitely be fixing the current Sense 3.6/ICS problem before it ships to the UK....
This is all conjecture btw but considering the smaller countries (Denmark's population-6million compared to UK population-60million) always get the updates first seem to suggest that they are in essence creating a controlled test enviroment before rolling... I'm just venting more than anything heh

I can see your train of thought, that HTC are using a low populace county like Denmark as a control. But how do you explain Germany getting it?
hmmm didnt realise Germany had it hmmm there goes that theory then heh... unless the Germans on average are more tech savy and better with feedback reports...wouldn't surprise me lol

Regarding the GPS toggle (or lack of same) that I mentioned above - I have contacted HTC about this, since I am quite frustrated about it.
They have escalated it, which I hope means that they will try to do something about it..!
Still liking ICS, despite small compatability issues with other apps, which hopefully will get fixed soon. I am incredibly happy that the old launch bar at the bottom with apps, phone and customization is gone. Didn't know how much I hated that until now. I also had an issue with my phone book before the update, where it would "forget" linked contact photos - this is fixed.
I use Widget Locker to alter my lock screen, and after the update I have to swipe twice to unlock, which is a nuisance. It's as if the first swipe is ignored completely. So I have disabled that and written to the dev.
Still haven't figured out how to create folders? All other ICS articles say that you can drag an app onto another to create a folder, but not on my XE.
And it's still fast!
If it's true what you guys above are suggesting about Denmark being a proving ground, I certainly don't mind being a guinea pig

If you have ICS, try it on your homescreen with 2 app shortcuts.
Seems to work fine on mine
I currently have gingerbread 2.3.4 which I'm very happy with, especially the homescreen layout with the apps/phone/personalise arc at the bottom. If I upgrade to ICC will it change this layout dramatically? Will I have the option to change back to the 2.3 style? I have widgetlocker which will do it for my lockscreen but I don't know about the homescreen itself. Help please, thanks!

The Apps/phone/personalize arc at the bottom is gone (wuhuu!) - see the screenshot I posted above. I much prefer the new layout, especially because it's customizable. And I wouldn't recommend using widget locker. It didn't react very well to my upgrade, and became a battery hog. Hopefully they will update the app soon, cause I really liked it.

Ah thanks, I didn't see the screenie as workplace internet filters out pictures. It doesn't look bad, customisable is good but it's a bit bland and un-stylised, I guess we have no choice but to get used to it!?
When I spoke to HTC yesterday they told me that they'd not even started rolling it out yet and to be totally honest I was left with the impression that it wouldn't be anytime soon.
does anyone here have issue after installing ICS to sensation XE? mine is having white screen every time exiting applications. it goes to my home page once i quit an application. i don't know whether it's a compatibility issue, but i doubt it is the case. i'd been waiting for it since last year and totally disappointed it turned out like this. any suggestion?

Nope. I have had it for three weeks now, and that hasn't happened to me once. It did, however, happen often before I upgraded. But I never found a solution to it, sorry.
Branded is when you buy a phone through a carrier (Orange/Vodafone etc). They put their own bits of software into the phone. This means that when updates come out from HTC, the carrier will not release it until they have tested it, and also made any changes to it that they see fit (like adding more bits of their software in).
Unbranded phones do not contain any carrier specific software and when updates are released they get them straight away from HTC's servers.
In the UK unbranded handsets typically come from the likes of Carphone Warehouse and I also think O2 provide unbranded handsets (though I may be wrong on that last point).
If you can get un-branded then do, as you'll get updates a lot faster and it wont be filled with the carriers software and changes, which often you have no chance of removing unless you root and install a custom ROM.
