Firstly, let me point out that this is my first post so please be gentle!!
I have had a HTC Sensation for almost 2 weeks now, and over the last few days, the HTC Sense is resetting almost every time I return to my home screen from an app or menu.
does anyone have any suggestions that might help or rectify this problem?
I've had my sensation 4g since it arrived in USA and since September it seems that Sense resets and crashes whenever I come from market or doing a lot of browsing. I restart often and the problem still exists. Time to learn to flash I guess.
I have been having this problem ever since the Orange OTA upgrade to Android 2.3.4 (1.45.61.4), in addition the battery life has got worse possibly due to the screen being randomly set to full brightness.
I can confirm it's a memory issue, as my phone's been using a different launcher for days now and it's not happened once with that. As soon as I revert back to sense, the issue magically reappears.

I got a Sensation XE last week and out of the box it crashed, constantly. I put on pretty much the same apps and set ups as i had on my Desire which i have come here from. And it kept crashing. As others said, it happens when moving between apps and constantly whilst browsing. I am really disappointed.
I therefore rooted, using the guides on here (which were ace) and flashed Android Revolutionary XE rom. Performance is great and crashing reduced - but only reduced. It has still crashed once or twice. I dont use a task killer.
Really disappointing for a supposed super phone. I LOVE sense, but if this carries on i will have to jump ship to another launcher. Trouble is that us lot on these forums are happy to try new things, but there are many out there who wont root or change their launcher and will just think the phone is rubbish.
One thing i am trying first is to test the widgets i have to see if they are causing the issues. I have removed FriendStream and i have to say so far (1 day) no crashing. Will post back if this continues to be the case....
A new phone should not crash, unless it is caused by an app you have installed. If removing the apps does not work then you can and should reject it as faulty and demand a new one. But to do that you are going to have to get it back to stock.

Just to let you know, running a different launcher won't make you lose the niceties of sense. The launcher itself is only a part of sense, think of it as the desktop skin. It's this "desktop skin" that's hogging the memory, causing it to have to restart whenever you leave apps, etc since it doesn't have enough spare memory to switch between tasks without ending them.
If you change to another launcher, you don't actually remove sense, as it's part of the rom. It just uses a different skin if you install another launcher, along with different layouts and the like depending on the launcher you choose. You still keep the nice bits, like the sense keyboards, messaging and weather apps, live wallpapers, etc, just that the desktop skin itself changes. The only downside to this is that without using the sense skin you lose the ability to use HTC's own widgets, but there may actually be an app out there that'll let you use them still. Not stumbled across it yet but I'm keeping an eye out and will post a link if I find it. Other launchers can come with their own compliment of widgets too, so you may find you actually prefer some of those over the sense versions...

You bought a phone which was broken, so your first step was to do something which could invalidate your warranty?
Yeah i was worried about doing it, but i am an impatient soul and am looking for a quick fix! - hoping there is a software issue rather than hardware. If it really doesnt work i'll try to get it all back to stock and send it back.
Thanks StuartTheFish, I might give that a go. But the more i think about it the more im concerned the handset itself might not be kosher. Although i must say that it hasnt crashed yet today and its the first day i havent had FriendStream widget running...
I spoke too soon, yesterday it was crashing more than ever. Freezing constantly at seemingly random moments and the internet was hanging constantly. It must be broken. So im sending it back. Now i just need to get it to S-ON. Got it back to stock easy enough, but this is the bit xl VipeR lx says is tricky. Wish me luck!
Your Task Killer should have an ignore list, just add it to that.
You don't need to use a Task Killer though, but that's up to you of course.
i couldnt get my task killer to identify sense in the ignore list, but as a brave man, i have relinquished my dependance on the task killer (a security blanket i brought with me from my desire ) and uninstalled it
thanks for the advice, i will see how it goes without it for a bit

Don't worry, as posted all over the net and explained better than me Android does an excellent job of managing itself, so you don't need a Task Killer.
If you set on using one then the HTC Sensation has one built in, on the Quick Settings tab from the drop down on the notification bar.
Personally I wouldn't use it though be you simply don't need to.
I'm having the same problem with my xe, and Im on my second phone. I need another new one but phones 4 u told me there are none left in the country and advised me to get a different handset.
Its definately a sense problem
I've been having the same problem on my < 2 week old Sensation. It sounds just like the other posts where it crashes when returning to the home screen from the browser or market etc... I'm not using a task killer. I've kept track today and It's crashed 16 times in about 12 hours! Its not right for a phone like this... Should I return it? It can't be normal.
I now have the same issue on my Sensation. I have owned my Sensation for about 2 months now having upgraded from a Desire, so far I have been very happy.
In the past week I have experienced the same issues as described above:
When exiting from apps like the browser, messages, email (I use K9) the phone will re-load sense. I do not use a task killer so I do not believe that is the issue.
I have been happy with the sense UI and use a lot of the HTC widgets so would prefer to stick with this. Surely a modern phone like the sensation should not be running out of memory? Is there an in app memory limit e.g. like within 32 bit windows having a 2GB max addressable memory limit.
Or are people saying that the phone is running out of memory?
I have removed the only app that has been installed within the last 2 weeks and the phone still has the same issue.
What options do I have for tracking the memory usage of sense and or the phone? The inbuilt tolls show plenty of free memory both in terms of application storage and phone usage (in the android task manager).
If I do need to go to a new launcher, what are peeps recomendations?
I contacted HTC via email and got the following reply (with niceties) within 2 hours:
• Perform a Soft reset by removing the battery again from the device whilst it is switched on, leave the battery out for two minutes before re-inserting and restarting your device.
• Perform a Hard reset
Note: It is advised to back up all information prior to completing this (anything stored on the SD or SIM card will be un-affected). This will return your device to its original factory settings.
Please find attached to this email information on how to back up your device.
How to perform a Hard Reset;
There are two ways to reset the handset to factory settings:
1) Please press MENU from the home screen, then tap Settings > SD & phone storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone, or
2) With the phone turned off, long press the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
Wait for the screen with the 3 Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press POWER.
When asked to confirm, press VOLUME UP.
Once you have performed the factory reset remove both the SD and Sim card from your phone to test the operation status of your device. Do not log back into Gmail if you have the facility straight away. Do not download any third party applications. First if you could please turn on your wifi and check to see if your web browsing is working. Open a game installed on your phone and see how it is working. Please allow 48hrs of working operation before you continue to install any third party applications to test the functionality.
I chose the soft rest option and this has fixed the issue for me - it appears I had something corrupt on my phone. I normally use the back button option instead of the home button so this may point to it not being a memory issue for me as well.
Good fast response from HTC as well

My phone was terrible for a while so I installed Go Launcher, HUGE difference and I love the fact that I can totally customize the way the UI works and looks. Haven't had a single crash since I installed it....and guess what the home screen goes landscape when you turn the phone...oh the simple things that entertain me. LOL
I had this problem, it was crashing pretty much every time I returned to home page. Switched to Go Launcher and it has not happened since(4 days now). Took a bit of time to set up Go Launcher the way I like it but well worth it. HTC need to look at Sense on the Sensation, seeing more and more people reporting this issue.
Hi guys, i just bot the HTC sensation XE few days ago. But few problems appear after i started using it for few hours like:
1. Unavailable to perform SYNC WITH EXISTING CONTACTS with facebook. Which after i click on it, all my friends in facebook will be sync to my address book. So whenever i click on the PHONE on homepage, 1300+ contacts will poops out. It drives me nut whenever i want to search for contact.
2. HTC sensation XE's RAM is supposed to be 768MB but when i checked with the Task Manager App, the total memory stated thr is just 563MB. Is it normal for every HTC sensation XE phones?
3. When i was sms with my friend, my friend's name suddenly changed to number only. I tried to re-add, restart, linked but it just appear as number but not name anymore.
I had the same problem with my Sensation XE. Everything became extra slow. Memory usage was way up leaving only about 60MB to play with meaning the clock and weather on the homescreen would load painfully slowly. I deleted a load of apps and all widgets but it still crashed out all the time.
Sunday it all came to a climax when I couldnt get a bar of signal. I turned off my phone and tried to turn it back on but nothing happened. I took the battery out, turned it on and it got stuck on the beats audio loading page. I repeated this about 4 or 5 times, taking out the sim each time too.
Thinking the phone had died i left it on the beats audio load screen and after about 5 mins it fired up. Now its super fast and works like a dream. Even issues I was having with remembering the WIFI at work seem to have ceased. Available memory has soared to around the 200MB mark.
Wish I could tell you what was eating the mem and how I fixed it but I've got no idea

Like a PC, it's a good idea just to turn them off (and pull battery) every couple of days. The memory and processors just seem to get a little clogged up after a few days just as your PC will be slower if you left it running for a week
The issue is still happening now with Sense 3.6! I had been using Go Launcher EX prior to the update to avoid the problem, thinking that I just had to wait until ICS came out and it would be sorted. However I installed ICS with Sense 3.6 just 3days ago and already sense has crashed at least 3 times. Has anyone else with the update found this?

I second that. i have long since given up on sense, but thought i would give it another chances after the 3.6 update and its exactly the same!! thanks to ADW launcher, and Android Pro Widgets, life is much less frustrating without it!!
Bumping this as I have the same issue. I've tried several factory resets, and noticed that using the back button to exit vs the home button helped *somewhat* yet I'm still getting roughly 20 force closes per day. It definitely seems to be a memory issue, but I've closed everything I can, moved everything I can to my SD/sim cards, and cleared all the caches, and I STILL get this stupid issue. How do I go about installing a different launcher?
Hi Guys
Can anyone help me to solve my problem?
Few days ago, i open my gmail and try to download a picture sent by my friend. And there is notification where downloading in progress. It was taking too long, and i can't remove it until now. The downloading still in progressing and running. When i off my internet connection, it say paused.
I kill tased, i clear cache, i press clear, i stop email application, the thing is still there. Until i open the battery, take out the SD card, sim card for 4 hours and restart again, the thing is still there. I really2 fedup. Until i think do i need to reset my phone to original factory? i don't want to lose all downloaded application and other things in my HTC sense.
@mspikatchu, a Factory Restore might be your best bet....You can use "My backup pro" from Google Play to backup your phone..You can also use "App backup and restore" and "Mobile backup 2" from Google Play..After you do a restore you need to download these apps again and open the app and click on restore...Your pictures should be ok because they are on your SD Card...There is an option to delete your SD when doing a Restore so be carefull not to select that option when restoring....Go into Privacy and select Back up my settings and Auto Restore..........I also took screen shots using the "power and home button" so i knew what apps i had just incase, and so i knew what apps i had on each screen...........

Your problem is that the email is sitting with Google in your inbox and each time your phone Syncs with your Google account is realises it has not been downloaded and tries to download it. If it is a large file then it will take a long time to download (depending upon the speed of your connection). I guess you either have to give it time, or go into your Google account on a browser and delete the email.

Hey,
I had the same problem as you for months until I uninstalled my Juice-defender app. Since then the load screen doesn't pop up and my internet etc works faster. I restarted my phone also after uninstalling.
If you have any task killer or power saving app I'd suggest deleting it....you'll be surprised at the difference!
