I got it to work with the same image but perhaps had a slightly easier time! I am sharing here in case others may find it helpful:
*ADB = WTF? if this is what you are wondering, then you are not alone. It refers to 'android development bridge' that allows your android device to connect to to pc via usb without being in sync or disc drive mode.
What you need to get into ADB.
*The android SDK
*android usb drivers
*ADB mode enabled in your phone and teh variable set up in pc system settings>>>read HOW TO ADB for DUMMIES from xda
>>I found the android usb drivers were already on my system. I have a feeling that the HTC sync app I have installed may have done that... if you have the ADB mode/drivers going properly it will look like this in your device manager:
You of course need to have a nice clean/formatted msd card in the phone to get the CID off it using the command line code iliko outlines above. For those curious, I used a a 2GB sandisk micro sdhc card. The original FAT32 formatting and later hex editing was done in windows.
*You dont need to do all that QMAT stuff anymore! Once youve popped in that adb code and got the CID number >> it looks like this
*red bits block out personal info and my first attempt which didnt work due to a typo
You'll need to write this number down - or better yet type it into a text/wordpad file so you can easily copy and paste it.
Then go to Sooa-'s Goldcard Hex Reversal Page and copy and paste the number in and press 'submit' >>youre reversed number will be generated and you will see a hyperlink to QMATS page where you can generate the gold card code.
Here you will input your email and your reversed number and the prized goldcard.img you are after will be sent to the email you have nominated.
The email seemed to have been sent pretty much instantly.
Then hop over and download the goldcard.img from your email account and follow iliko's instructions for the hex editor stuff. Its pretty easy. You are basically replacing the lines of the goldcard.img into to sd cards existing lines. I had my sd card plugged into my pc via a reader for this bit - as you need to be able to identify 'removable disk' in hex editor as per the instructions. Whether you could have kept the m-sd in the phone and gone over to 'disc drive' mode is something I didnt try.
Once youve authored the edited hex onto the card, IT IS NOW A GOLDCARD!
Now. to get that update.... I fussed about with all that clicimg/diag business and had no luck.
What worked:
*As mentioned I have HTC sync installed. I plugged that in and went into 'htc sync' mode on the phone (ie, not disc drive mode).
From here I just ran the RUU Click HTC WWE 1.67.405.6 WWE release signed NoDriver.exe from the desktop and it rebooted and updated in a civilised manner. No button holds, it just did it business. I then took the goldcard out and replaced my original SD with all my music etc.
Upon rebooting it was great to be asked for UK english and finally see the market there. Even better - it actually worked !! \o/ Gmail, youtube etc all good too.
I hope that was helpful to someone!! It will at least keep us going until 2.01 comes out (see here for more info on that)
thanks for your reply, ive tried it as you say without selecting a connect type and enabling usb debugging but its still gving me cid:not found
ive formatted the card by phone, by pc, mounted, unmounted, windows 7 and now windows xp but still says cant be found.
although if i run 'adb devices' it finds the device.
im using a sandisk sdcard which ive read on other forums should be ok.
anyone with any more ideas?
deanbag,
I ran into the exact same problem (samdisk SD card inclusive). For some reason, the command line worked out after I entered in the command line “adb” to access the SD card, pressed ctrl+break and re-entered the complete command. The response was simply the card CID.
The problem was WINZOZ 7
I have repeated all steps of the iliko guide and the phone flash done very well (but no copy CLICIMG.zip only used RUU under WinXP)
Now i have the last HTC ROM NO-Brand and the phone works overall very fine
Thanks to all peoples that spend their time to "search" new ways.
Followed instructions and after many hours repeating the same mistakes I have got the normal ROM on my phone. Main thing that I didn't have was the drivers properly installed (I use a Mac and virtual box) so once the HTC Sync and drivers were installed, the RUU file performed the update without a hitch.

accateb, good to know im not only the one who's had this problem.
i typed in the command the same as in the screenshot of gto168's post.
could you tell me exactly where in the command line you added "adb" as its not clear from your above post.
So it looks like the RUU.exe is the problem. You cannot simply copy the RUU to the MicroSD card, insert it, and reboot the phone. Copying a windows executable to a sudo Linux system will not work.
So does anyone have an RUU that is not an exe file and is truely a zip?
Does that means I have to find a third-party to do so, instead of from HTC? I'm a newbie at this. I wanna get rid of the Malaysian ROM and I came across this forum. Great stuff here.

If you just want to get rid of your malaysian OS then just follow the instructions and you will have original HTC version after that. There is no 2.X version firmware for Tattoo available anywhere at this moment.
I put the new firmware to my Tatto, it is looks fine, but when I replaced the Orange UK card with my old Vodafone UK card and turn on the phone it said: "SIM network unlock pin", and only emergency calls allowed. What can I do with it?

Nothing, absolutely nothing! Even if you buy unlock code from Orange UK for £20.00 it will not work. It will say "Network unlock successful" but will ask for code again after a while.
The only workaround is using i-smartsim from dealextreme.com until CLEVER brains will hack Tattoo or find a root and the way to completely reflash it including radio module. Unfortunately there is not a brave man who is ABLE to nail Tattoo down.

OK, I ordered that i-SmartSim. I already bought an code form "htccode.com", but it doesn't works unfortunatelly.
Did code said Unlock successful? If yes then it is not htccode.com's fault. Orange support said they request code from HTC which was exactly like I bought from htc-unlock.com That is HTC messing up things by too much customizing our Tattoos.

Yes, it said unlock successful, but still no network detected, and when I restart my phone it ask for the code again.
iliko: I bought the SmartSim, but there is still some problem. I see all of my contact and messages on my Vodafone SIM card, but still no network detected. It will makes me crazy soon ...
Just an update for those having gripes with windows 7 >> HTC have released a HTC sync upgrade that makes it play nice with W7. The update was released Jan 12 2010. Please note that HTC Sync contains the android adb drivers, which is quite essential for upgrade methods described earlier in this thread
Yeah, because internet petitions have been so effective in the past.
Of couse we can all write an individual email which may end up in PA's deleted Items but having petition sent electronically and posted via post may work better. On the other we need to spread a word to get more signature because 6 signatures is too low.
Hi Everybody, thanks for this info looks like exactly what i am after, i am ok with orange so i dont want to change provider, i just want the gmail and other apps back, what are the risks with performing this procedure and is it the one i want, i tried installing the gmail.apk files and every time i had an attachment it crashed, am i understanding this thread correctly as the last few posts confused me
this will install a vanilla HTC Rom containing all the apps
the phone will still be simlocked to orange
i currently have version 1.67.61.7 is this older than the one i have downloaded ready 1.67.405.6

It won't break (if you follow correctly the steps) it if Orange notice the change they may not support it.

am i correct on this all i need to do is create the goldcard stick it in the phone, install htc sync from the HTC website, and execute the RUU Click HTC WWE 1.67.405.6 WWE release signed NoDriver.exe and it will re-boot to the proper rom ?
I managed to unlock my HTC Tattoo which was locked to Orange UK (still locked!). Thanks to my friend who adviced to try one of those i-SmartSim 2008 SIM Card Unlock Attachment for Nokia and Most Other Cell Phones
I used I-SmartSim and it works with Vodafone now!
I am so happy as have all Google applications installed too.
Hello! Thanks for the guide btw. I just bought a locked Orange UK Tattoo on ebay and plan on using it as soon as I get it.
So, to follow the steps illiko suggested to have the phone unlocked and flashed, to I have to buy the i-SmartSim? Is there any chance it won't work?
Plus, has anybody used the SD card that comes with the phone? Does it work with the procedure?
1) Backed it up with Nandroid
2) Upgraded with ROM Upgrade for HTC Tattoo (Orange)
3) Applied UNLOCK code bought from Orange UK which worked fine with new ROM
4) Rolled back nandroid backup

Hi, I was told by HTC that the Orange upgrade would update from Android 1.6 to 2.1 but just as I ran the installer it listed that I would be altering the version from 1.67.405.6 to 1.67.61.43 (which seems more like a downgrade), and judging by the number it doesn't look like Android 2.1?
I have just asked this same question to HTC and I'm waiting a response; but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has upgraded and could confirm what version the Orange upgrade does actually apply?

It upgdaded mine to version 1.67.61.43 NOT to 2.1!
Thanks iliko, I think my tattoo was originally on v1.67.61.43 but I used the tip in this post to upgrade to 1.67.405.6 (note the .405.6 from .61.43).
Can you please tell me: did the 1.67.61.43 'upgrade' still have Youtube and Gmail missing?
Yes they were missing again, but it was differ from my original Orange ROM. Also it made possible to unlock it with official unlock code.
I think after my email to CEO Orange forced HTC to work on a ROM where unlock code would work.
P.S. There was not any sound on boot btw. Did not test mp3 and other sounds though.

I just got a response from HTC it reads:
Hi again, What you have to do is to install the upgrade to 1.67.61.43 this is a preparatory update. Shortly after installing this you will recive the full update to Android 2.1. For the full update, we would recommend using a free wi-fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply" Thanks for contacting HTC. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again. Best Regards, HTC
(I removed people's names involved)
So I wonder how you get the full update to 2.1?
I'm going to have a go at this later, I'll report back unless anyone else has managed it?

Ok, it turns out the person I was dealing with at HTC apparently thought I was using a HTC Hero; so no 2.1 update just yet. The recent 'upgrade' apparently just fixes a few issues.
I'm sticking with the 1.67.405.6 version unless Orange re-introduce Gmail and Youtube.
First off, thank you greatly for this tutorial ! Getting rid of Orange is a MUST!
Just a quick question regarding the retrieving of the Goldcard:
-I've received the email with the attachment 'goldcard.img', but I can't retrieve this zip file. I have tried winzip, winimage, and Irfanview, and still no luck..

I have called them and they rejected saying this.
Can you forward that email to me jamalli[at sign]gmail.com?

That is not a zip file or an archive you have to use as it is without opening.
