Default Alpharev/unrevoked new (easier) rooting process

This is to let any stock bolt user know that there is a new rooting process for the thunderbolt which can be found at Revolutionary it is an easier process than the current manual root process, if you are on the fence because of the process being too difficult this may be for you. We also *think* this will allow for rooting of the GB OTA when it comes but we still can not say for sure. If you have any questions you will likely get more answers on this thread

I am just passing this info along and do encourage everyone to take full control of your phone

just curious why this got moved? we have a thread in the root section,we put this one in general to get info to the "on the fence about rooting" folks that do not frequent the root forum.

i vote it gets moved back,or we could start up a new thread,if it can stay in general.

thanks!

I read about this and thought it was interesting. I was planning on rooting and studying up on doing the long version, but then I read somewhere that you lose voice mail if you root?? Is this true? I never had this problem when I rooted my og droid. Thx!

I actually shell out the extra $3 a month, whenever I get a VM I also get a text from VZW so I didn't realize the whole lacking notification thing. Is it rom specific?

Yes it is. Any sense GB rom will not notify you of VM unless you reboot. Then it pops up but you'll need another reboot to clear it.

Beautiful, the only thing stopping me from rooting was the possibilty of bricking that and losing my data. This is great thanks! Worked flawlessly!

I think this would be better suited in the ATR section (as a sticky) Considering it's about rooting and all.

Frisco, Yeahha, any objections?

We've got a thread in atr.

It could become unstickied, but I think it belongs here for the same reason as the over sticky... for the nonrooted folks that don't go to atr. Alot of em have been waiting for a simple root method.

Because the rooting method's thread has been updated I would think it would be okay to unsticky this. I actually think the only people that this thread matters to currently would be the three of us and maybe Frisco.

Hate to ask the obvious, but did you click on the driver download and let the wizard install them?

It should see your phone pretty much immediately.

OK, so I'm going to take the plunge today or tonight and root my TB. Here is my one question that I have yet to get answered even when I ask it in the TB rooting thread.....How do I stay on the stock ROM when I root? I like what it is for now and will play around with other rom's later, right now I just want to root and have my freedom back. THANKS!

If you are using the Unrevoked method, that's EXACTLY what you will be doing. Until you install another rom, you'll be running your stock rom, it will just be rooted.

Quick question, if I need to revert back to stock (if I need to send my T-Bolt back to VZW for example) is this possible.
Sorry if this is kind of a noob question.

Thx.

Short answer, YES. Long answer, scotty85 has posted directions in this thread: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/402115-thunderbolt-rooting-methods-updated.html on how to do it. It's pretty methodical, but if you follow the instructions, there should be no problem...

Question about rooting, I used to have an OG Droid, Rooted and flashed a custom ROM. However I noticed overtime it degraded my phone, battery was crap, etc etc.

If I root my TB, can I keep it as is? Or do I need to flash a custom rom? Basically, I just wanted to keep my phone the way it is but have root access to be able to install root apps and what not. Im worried about it affecting my battery life

You do not have to flash custom roms, what you experienced was likely normal battery life. Cell batteries are only good for a certian amount of cycles over time parts of the battery will become unusable and the battery life will get shorter and shorter. Also within a year of it's release (or months) the OG Droid was no longer top of the line, apps were being made to use the 1Ghz processors in most of the newer phones and the OD Droid was left in the dust, not to mention the limited phone memory on it as well.

You will need to flash the most current rooted rom for the bolt and you can stay on stock that way, remove any apps you don't want (blockbuster), then when an OTA becomes available you will just need to flash the rooted version of the OTA.

coyotes, you really need to learn to ask your questions in the correct places.

the current rooting methods thread is only 23 posts long, and you have not posted in it. might want to check it out, theres a video from nate mills demonstrating the revolutionary method: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/402115-thunderbolt-rooting-methods-updated.html

as was explained to you the revolutionary method can be used JUST to turn your s-off,to s-off+custom recovery,or to s-off+custom recovery+root.

if you havent looked at the site, watched the video,or read post and asked questions in the ROOT forum( Thunderbolt - All Things Root - Android Forums ) just running the revolutionary tool doesnt root you. it unlocks your bootloader and gives you a custom recovery. if you want to be rooted there is a file that you must download and flash in recovery, and then you will be running your stock, rooted rom, without having lost any of your data.

just REMEMBER... once you are running a custom recovery you cannot accept OTAs so then the GB ota comes, you WILL have to react accordingly to avoid puting your phone in a potentially unrecoverable bootloop.

so please... look at the rooting methods thread. read my other how-to sticky( [HOW TO] and some root terminology ). read posts in the root forum. youve said inthe other forums you want me to help you,but you need to post your questions in a forum where i(and other very knowledgeable rooted folks) will see them.

*steps down off soapbox*

good luck with the rooting, illl get your cigar and blazer ready

Yeah, I did that. I dont know what the heck Im doin wrong. When I put USB debugging on and plug in my phone, I never get a notification pop up either with the little triangle w/ the ! in it. My phone never asks me if I want to be in charge only mode too, and I have that checked as well to ask each time its plugged in. My default setting is for it to be in charge only mode as well. It does charge, I just never get asked and no notifications show up.

Scotty....I apologize, really I do. I have read the other thread but did not post there. I have a bad habit of skimming over things and if I don't find what I'm looking for right away or if it doesn't jump out at me then I start posting and asking questions. I also really wish that someone on here that could and would root my TB for me lived where I do. But hey I'll take the plunge on my own just like I did with my Eris. So I'm going to go over to the other threads you pointed out and ask some more questions before I proceed. Thanks again Scotty.

No need for apologies coyotes,I just want to make sure we get you the help you seek. Watch the video, post up in the root section if you have questions after.

The new method is really easy. If you can do the Eris root for dummies method, you can do this for sure
