Because of this issue, I took my phone to the Verizon store so see what could be done. First, as always, they did a factory reset (I hate factory resets). I knew that wouldn't fix a hardware problem, but it made the Verizon lady happy so I did it.

When the problem wasn't resolved she said that they would send me a new phone. This wasn't exactly good news because I actually liked my phone. It never experienced any of the issues I see in the forums (such as random re-boots).

Anyway, when she looked on her computer screen, she told me that the phone I bought in March was out of warranty. It seems that the computer thinks I got a new phone in October. We couldn't figure out why it would say that and why such a random date. Finally I looked under "software update" and found that the date I "got a new phone" was the exact same date I got Gingerbread pushed to my phone.

It seems along with new software I got a new IMEI number. So finally the manager came over and did an override and I get a "new" t-bolt in the mail in a few days.

So, has anyone else heard of this? My phone has never been rooted, and as far as I know it was brand new when I got it from Verizon.

No that seems very odd that it did that. I am glad they gave you a warranty replacement if you had told them the phone was dropped they would have said that was physical damage and not covered under the warranty, I am also glad the manager was able to fix the problem for you

I actually called before hand and DID tell them it was dropped, but the dude on the phone said "as long as it doesn't have road rash you'll be fine." I wonder though, will I get a new one year warranty with the new phone, or will I just finish out the remainder of the original?

It finishes the duration of the original, or 90 days, whichever is longer. So, if you got a replacement on day 364 of your 1 year warranty, it would be covered for 90 days from the day it's replaced. However, in your case, it is still good til March, which is longer than the 90 day replacement would've been, so you're still covered until then.

Think he was just asking if he gets a new warranty period with the new phone, not the phone itself. But good clarity as well, that it will be a Certified Like-New Replacement (read: Refurbished) phone.

Yes, I was/am aware the my "new" phone will be used. Looks like I'm still waiting until March to root.

Think more likely his imne number was imputed in to Verizon system wrong. Have you checked the number to the sticker under the battery?

Yeah, the IMEI number on the screen and under the battery are the same. looks like your theory is very plausible. I wonder why, though, they would have messed with the numbers when I got GB?

I'm surprised they replaced your phone with it having been dropped. That would be a bigger reason for them to void the warranty than a software upgrade. Does the phone have any physical signs of it being dropped? If it does then you lucked out. Typically any signs of physical damage (dropped, submersed in water, etc) means "Yeah your warranty is expired, but we have these "lovely" flip phones that will only cost you $200 out of warranty". Count your blessings, and give your wife a little hell for dropping your phone....
