Default App Associations screwed my phone up!!!

Update: see post #4 for specific problem. Figured out that the new update added a feature called App Associations. It forces all URLs to be opened with a browser as opposed to having the option of opening with an app on the phone like YouTube or RedFin or any other app that handles URL paths for something. This feature destroyed the functionality of this phone. It needs to be fixed somehow.

I don't know if it's related or not, but my phone just updated a couple days ago.

I'm having a problem with the default apps that are used for specific things.

Specifically, in an email, my wife will send me a redfin.com link, and when I click on it, it used to open in the redfin app. Now it opens in the internet browser.

Also, the same thing happens with youtube links in the internet. I'd click it, and it used to go to the youtube app. Now it opens in the internet browser.

I went to manage apps, and to internet and 'Clear Defaults'.

I don't know if it's actually clearing them. If I go back in, it's not grey'd out. And I'm still having the problem.

Does anyone know if there is a fix to allow me to choose default apps for specific things again? Is this a problem with the recent update?

I installed a couple apps since the update was done. I uninstalled those and have restarted the phone a few times.

Any help would be great, thanks!

I've been working with this with nearly no success.

I downloaded an app called 'Default App Manager Lite' - with it I was able to select a video player to be the default for playing online video. However, since things like the Redfin app and all the others aren't in specific categories, I can't select those for specific actions.

It's almost like the phone isn't recognizing that there are more than the default app for doing a task. I click a redfin.com link, and it opens in the internet browser. It's like it doesn't recognize that there is a redfin app. Same with all other tasks (just using Redfin as the example since it was the first thing that I noticed the problem on).

All applications are doing this. I went in to manage the applications, and chose 'Clear Defaults' on what I thought was the problem apps. But that didn't give me the prompt to choose what programs when doing those tasks.

That's why I think it doesn't recognize other programs are capable of doing these different tasks.

I might go through the manage application list and clear defaults for all the apps there, and see if it will let me start over. That will just take some time. And I'm not against hard resetting if necessary. However, I don't know if that will fix the problem if its because of the recent Thunderbolt update.

Anyone with some other ideas?

I believe it might be a problem with the 'APP ASSOCIATIONS'

Because there is an app 'associated' with a task, it causes all other apps to be ignored.

Example - I just cleared the defaults for the 'maps' (google) application. I went back in, and it wasn't grey'd out. I remembered seeing it in the App Associations under Physical Address. So it's automatically the default app because of this maybe.

Now for 'Web URLs' it shows that 'Internet' is what is associated with it. That would explain why redfin.com url's and youtube.com urls are only opening in Internet, as opposed to letting me have more programs to choose from. However, if I go into the association part for 'Web URL's', I only have my Internet and Dolphin as options. I want Internet to be the default most of the time, but I want other things that I have apps for to be able to be used like they used to be all the time.

The phone used to just recognize that I had more apps that could do something and let me decide how I wanted to open it up. Now it's only doing it one way.

Was this something that was changed with the recent Thunderbolt update?

The App Association thing is verified when I select Dolphin for the Web URL, and click on the Redfin.com link. It opened up in Dolphin Browser, so this App Association section is controlling the actions. However, I'm not able to have it open in the RedFin App. (Same for Youtube and all other apps like this)

Default Found Problem...No Solution?

I think I found the problem. My wife has a Thunderbolt too, and has not updated with the recent update a couple days ago. In the Settings>Applicaions...my phone now has 'App Associations and hers does not. Like I said in a previous post, it looks like this new feature is interfering with the other apps being able to be used for tasks where they used to be. The specific issue I'm seeing, is the Web URL one. It forces a browser to be used. Previously it allowed other applications to be used when there was an app that supported it. Not any more.

Someone please help me fix this. I wish I could revert back to the previous version. This new issue makes the phone suck. It really feels like I jumped back 5 years in integration development. Nothing works with eachother. I might as well go back to my old winmo phones!

My Wife's Thunderbolt just updated last night, and now she is having the same exact problem.

This issue is going to affect EVERYONE's phones. I don't know if this App Association is restricted only to the Thunderbolt's or if it's all Android devices.

This is a major issue that just destroyed the phones integration with it's own apps. I might as well get an iPhone if this is what I've got to live with now with Android. (can't believe I just said that)

Is anyone else experiencing these problems after the update? There are tons of people viewing this thread, but no one as responded.

Have you gone into menu-settings-applications and cleared the default setting for that app that the action is assigned to. Next time it goes to use it, it should give you the option to pick the default app/program..

I'm updated and have had no issues with it...

Yeah. That's the first thing I did. That used to be the standard if you wanted to change the default opening program.

That was one of the things that was taken away.

So, I've learned a bit about what is going on. Apple sued HTC, and in turn, HTC screwed it's US customers.

Apple is claiming a patent on the ability to identify links within a web browser as something other than a web url (complete bs on Apple's part, since this technology had been around in desktops for a decade before apple used it in the iphone). Anyways, to get out of being in more trouble, HTC removed this ability from it's US customers (outside US doesn't have patent issues).

So basically, either we have to root our phones to a countries version without the patent issue, or we have to deal with it.

I'm sure there will be some programs that can help with workarounds in some way. I was pointed to one called Flashify. Haven't tried it yet, and it doesn't look nearly as smooth for somethings as it used to be, but it looks like it could work well enough for the time being. I don't believe it will bring back too much usability, but for opening things like youtube links in the youtube app, it can work.

Everyone who is having this issue (all HTC US customers), need to email HTC!!! Write out a strongly worded letter of distaste. If HTC sees that it's going to be losing a TON of customers, they will hopefully work out a deal with Apple, and just pay them to be able to use the software. I used to be a loyal HTC user...the last 4 phones I've bought have been HTC. If this BS continues, I won't even consider HTC anymore.

My bolt is doing the same after the recent update. Glad to hear mine is not the only one. My Dolphin asks every time to be the default browser. My Dialer One asks the same.

It's not just happening on the TB. I've got an Inc2, bolt's on its way, and it's doing the same thing. I'm pretty certain this HTC'S way of getting around the rotten fruit's lawsuit. Wish they'd just licence these patents they never should have been granted and be done with it!

Blame apple and their stupid lawsuit. That's why HTC had to release the app associations update.
