Default Rookie question. How to jailbreak =-)

I know its not called that, but learning things is getting hard.. I can go to one website and be jailbroken and giving an app to get pretty much anything, but how the hell does it work for androids?

I hear of unlocking, then opening boot loader though htc or other confusing methods .. then picking out roms and ahhhh.. I'm all lost.

I dont want to do any massive changes.. all I need is the tethering and bad boy app store =-)

The rooting methods are different a little bit. It depends what kind of phone do u have? My htc sensation has wi-fi tetnering in stock version. If u need to run programs from android market that requires root privileges, than u need to root ur phone

I done the ICS Update and it was simple and painless.
Download can be found here for the ROM.
Goo-inside.me Downloads - Downloading RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_CINGULAR_3.26.502.52.zip
I used these instructions from chall80
Ok, so here we go....

You need to use HTC Sync to sync any data that you want saved.

Then, you need to connect your device to your computer, and set it to "charge only". You need to make sure that you have "USB Debugging Enabled".
  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Development
  5. Tap to check USB debugging.
Once you've enabled USB Debugging, and connected your device using the "charge only" setting, Double click the RUU file.

From that point on, it will prompt you for a couple things, but there are no options or choices to make. Its bulletproof.

THIS OPERATION WILL COMPLETELY WIPE YOUR ONBOARD DATA, AND RETURN YOUR PHONE TO "OUT OF BOX" CONDITION. It will have Android 4.0.3, and Sense 3.6

This is an AT&T release and does not void your warranty, unlock your bootloader, gain access to the root folder, or remove AT&T bloatware. This is perfectly legit for those who don't wish to mess with root. An RUU is the manufacturers method for upgrading phones.

I have screenshots, and just don't wanna mess with uploading them(too much of a pain). If you wanna see them, PM me and I'll email them to you.

This is painless and so worth it!!!

EDIT: This does not wipe your SD Card

thanks.. yea I ran into your other post and I'm almost ready to try it, but I have synce issues I never fix/ figured out.. (Im still used to itunes. haha).

I have the new HTC Sync 3.056 and everything connects and it does sync, but..

1) It looks like it only sync whats on my external memory. Now I know there is a "device setup" button where you can select internal storage, but does that wipe out the other sync for external?

So basically when people sync they have to do it 2 times for both internal and external? Doest seem right.. why cant it do both.

2) Documents (mail is being copied to my PC.. but I cant hit the off button to stop that.. funny thing is its highlights like I can hit the off button.. but it doesn't work. I dont want my mail copied to my PC.

3) People Option is not highlighted. So it looks like its not backing up my call contacts.. this might be do to me not selecting the internal storage.. but I want to make sure I can sync both

So once I get the syn thing figured out I think people said that I still need to back something else up ( sys files or something) before flashing anything.?

To be honest i didn't back anything up with one exception.I exported my important contacts from my phone to sd card is all i done before installing the ROM.I done this just using my phone. I never use sync for anything really anyway. Most my contacts sync with facebook etc.I just mount mine as disc drive and move my files manually since i don't have many or do it that often.

well I was messing around with it and if I switch to internal it will copy the pics from there to my photo/device cam shots..

Thats fine since I have all my pics and things going to external.. but I thought if I switch to internal it might then give me the option to set up the PEOPLE option in sync... but it doesn't.. its still grayed out. According to HTC it should be open for you to select where to back up the contacts.. ie outlook or windows contacts.

and of course non of HTC will back up the system files. I wonder if I can just copy and past everything from internal storage(including the hidden files.

I need to take care of theses issues before I can try the ICS update.

HA!
Glad you got it figured out cause im not sure how my contacts got saved to my google account lol
I did open HTC Sync when i got home and it gives me the option to save my windows contacts but that's it.No other contact options there. As you mentioned yours was greyed out you have to turn on each sync option in the sync window.Wasn't sure if that was your problem but i posted a screenshot anyway.
I may try to look more into saving all my contacts in windows later tonight and try too figure out how exactly this is supposed to work for future reference.Below is the on/off switch i was talking about. This is on each option/tab for people/music/gallery etc.You have the option to turn each one on or off in HTC Sync.

Well i just exported all my gmail contacts using Gmail and saved them as Outlook CSV format (for importing into Outlook or another application). Then opened windows contacts on my vista laptop and imported the file to there and it imported all my gmail contacts to my windows contacts with success. So now it should be simple to sync them with HTC Sync using the people/sync windows contacts option.Worked like a charm with 400 contacts
Here is a screenshot of some of the contacts in windows after exporting them from Gmail.

1)HTC- for documents, songs, vids, pics
2) Then I have to export contacts to google mail.. then exportat it to a cvs file to save on the PC
3) I had to use astro file manager to back up my apps...

This is crap.. wtf HTC?

Windows 7 should have the contacts folder.Open Windows Contacts by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Contacts.
I agree with WTF HTC!

well.. I read about that in my search and its not there.. I tried to search windowns contacts and that failed.. but later for the shit of it I tired contact alone in the search box and bam.. it came up.

of course there are no new numbers because HTC doesn't sync to it. Not matter what I do its grayed out.. ohh well.. at least I got everything backed up EXCEPT all the system stuff.

Only thing im finding about doing a backup is that you have to be Rooted to do a Nandroid backup.
Here is some info on that.
How to Create Nandroid Backup & Restore it to your Android Device | VikiTech.com

How To Backup and Restore Your Android Phone with Titanium Backup - How-To Geek

Here is another option if you haven’t rooted, or don’t want to, or can’t do so without wiping your device first? There’s a ton of data on your device, and although a lot is automatically synced to your Google account, some isn’t. Let’s look at what you need to back up, and how you can do so.

hahah/.. this keeps getting better..

"
Alternatively, you can use ASTRO File Manager to copy APK files of each application onto your SD card; just hit Menu | Tools | Application Manager/Backup, select all the apps you want to keep, and press Backup. You can restore them later from the same menu.
The disadvantage of using APKs is that, once restored, you will no longer receive automatic updates for the apps from the Market."

I'm a new user to this and I really cant believe people have to go through this. It looks like I have to unlock the device to use the Titanium Backup. Seem the only way to cope the system files

Yep.
What is the purpose of backing up apps anyway? To save certain app data?
Just wondering because all your downloaded apps are automatically saved in the market.
