I thought about posting this in the "all things root" section, but I figured maybe i'd dump it here in hopes of spreading interest in development. Pirateghost over at xda released a non-beta version of Ice Cream Sandwich over the weekend. It seems like the flashing process might still be a little buggy, but either way...this is a huge thing in our community! Maybe development is picking up for our device!

Ok, so no one else is impressed...lol I just downloaded the RUU from xda, and am about to flash an unrooted, completely stock, att bloated Ice Cream Sandwich at lunch...TOTALLY STOKED!!!
I'm probably just talking to myself here, but I just flashed the RUU, and now have ATT's update on my phone. Ice Cream Sandwich!! Sense 3.6!! Totally awesome!!! Much faster than before...switching between screens and apps is faster. No BS...at my office I consistently have had 1 bar of LTE band. Since flashing, I have 3-4... LIKE!!!!
Device(s): HTC Vivid Rum Float4 ICS.
Motorola Atrix 4.5.141, rooted.
Carrier: Not Provided

Lol, I will give you company. I flashed the rooted AT&T update yesterday and agree with you on all the improvements. I hoping to get better battery life as soon as I can teach myself to put the phone down some time.

so here's the deal...the ICS that I installed is NOT rooted. It is a stock ATT distribution. They have started the rollout, and a guy in Detroit saved the RUU(Rom Update Utility) before he used it. This is important, as the RUU self deletes after you install it(the Over the Air version anyway). This update does not void your warranty. Does not brick the phone, because it is directly from ATT/HTC. The only thing you need to do is sync anything you want to keep, because it reverts the phone to the out of box state.
Its pretty fool proof, but i'm willing to help anyone who has questions. I have run it on my phone and my wifes...I have extensive experience flashing rooted roms(Inspire 4g). Its not nearly as scary as you might think.
I'm holding off on rooting my vivid, because at the moment, the developers are still working on getting S-Off. That and the vivid forum at XDA has imploded recently, and thats where most of the development happens(historically anyway...WildChild has his own website now, and I have used lots of his ROM's before)
I'm trying to get screenshots to post for you guys, but the restrictions are pretty crazy...
What do you mean Restrictions?
Sounds great i may have to try this.Do you have a link to the download at XDA?Im a member there but haven't seen the download yet.If you could provide the link with instructions that would be awesome!!
Mine is stock.Bootloader is still locked etc.Just for your info.I think i found it but i will wait for you to update here to be sure. There instructions seem complicated but im sure its not too bad
I'll check back later this evening after work. Thanks!
Second, you need to use HTC Sync to sync any data that you want saved.
Third, you need to connect your device to your computer, and set it to "charge only". You need to make sure that you have "USB Debugging Enabled".
From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap Applications.
Tap Development
Tap to check USB debugging.
Once you've enabled USB Debugging, and connected your device using the "charge only" setting, Double click the RUU file.
From that point on, it will prompt you for a couple things, but there are no options or choices to make. Its bulletproof.
THIS OPERATION WILL COMPLETELY WIPE YOUR ONBOARD DATA, AND RETURN YOUR PHONE TO "OUT OF BOX" CONDITION. It will have Android 4.0.3, and Sense 3.6
This is an AT&T release and does not void your warranty, unlock your bootloader, gain access to the root folder, or remove AT&T bloatware. This is perfectly legit for those who don't wish to mess with root. An RUU is the manufacturers method for upgrading phones.
I have screenshots, and just don't wanna mess with uploading them(too much of a pain). If you wanna see them, PM me and I'll email them to you.
This is painless and so worth it!!!
EDIT: This does not wipe your SD Card

Do you know the name of the Root/Bloatware folder or are these 2 different folders?.Removing the bloatware would be great also!
Is there such a list that tells you what can and can't be removed? That would be nice but im prob asking too much on that idea lol..
Thanks for all your help!
Downloading this now and will try it later tonight

Rooting your phone = Gaining access to the base(root) folder of your phones internal file structure(similar to C:/ on your pc). This folder is locked from the factory. It contains all of the proprietary information and apps on your phone. It contains the ROM(the skin or user interface(HTC Sense), The radio(which controls how your phone communicates data wirelessly), and it contains all the proprietary apps(bloatware), and the kernel(basically how the OS communicates with the hardware). Rooting your phone voids your warranty, as the manufacturer can't guarantee anything that they haven't tested.
If you want to remove bloatware and try flashing different roms, kernels, and radios, you HAVE to root. The rooting process has been made very simple for this phone(it was not very simple in the beginnning), by Hasoon2000. He created a GUI tool to automate everything.
The state of Vivid Development at XDA is super crazy right about now. Two of the main developers bailed. WildChild now operates out of his own website, and PirateGhost got pissed at noobs and bailed...although rumor is he'll be back. Apparently those two have the best roms for our device right now. I'm waiting for things to settle down before I root.
Now, once you root, and start flashing, i'm certain you'll be hooked. You're a pretty well read guy it seems, and you like your phone...so be prepared for fun. My wife accused me of having an affair with my Inspire 4g...i asked if that was a "microUSB" joke...she didn't get it...lol
Maybe when things settle down, we'll root our phones at the same time and see whats going on...I was never ever sad that I rooted the Inspire 4g. and as for the warranty, some might call it unethical, but you do have insurance that covers catastrophic physical AND water damage...i'm just sayin...

You sure this isn't a beta version man? That's all im finding on xda.I just want to be sure.I prefer not to have to revert back from this if it is a beta version.A screenshot of the build number, android version, etc.would be great. You can upload your pictures here and share ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
if you have trouble putting them on here.Or you can email it to me at woodsytattooman@gmail.com
Thanks!

Hey Chall, yes id like to see your screenshots too.if you save them to your google Picasa account folder you can paste the url here. Even if the pics a re large, the forum here resizes it for you.

Whats the screen size on the HTC Vivid?im looking for a secondary phone
4.5" I really like this phone. A lot of people are dissatisfied with the level of development, but just today, things are starting to take off...lots of folks getting excited about learning to cook roms! You may consider waiting for the HTC OneX...check it out!!
I personally love this phone...don't think you'd hate it!

Oh good! I have always purchased HTC devices since I was on AT&T. Had two HTC tilts but hvent had a HTC android... I will check out some Youtube reviewson the Vivid and on the new device you are speaking of.
4.5" is a nice size screen. Its doable. I know I cant go back to the tilt-size screens

I came from the inspire 4g, and it has a slightly smaller screen than vivid, but the vivid is great...especially with this update....much faster!!!!
Besides, then we'd be hanging out in the same forum...it would never be boring!!!

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to pressure you into anything...You need to be comfortable before you do anything to your phone. Its too much headache/heartache if something bad happens! i just want to make sure that we all have all the same info! The vivid community isn't nearly as active as some others, so we gotta look out for each other!!!

Is there another place that I can download this? The original link doesn't work anymore and I'm downloading the RUU from file factory but it is crawling at a snails pace.

Not yet, still downloading. Have about 100mb to go so in the next ten minutes. =) Relocked my bootloader, backed up my stuff, and I'm ready to go. I just put ICS on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 last night and can't wait to put it on my Vivid!
Just finished flashing. My initial impression is...nice! Scrolling between screens is a lot smoother and app launching seems to be a little bit faster. Can't to really mess around with it later! I just wish they would leave the stock android keyboard. I really hate the Sense keyboard.

Download Gingerbread Keyboard from Market. From the home screen TAP Settings, Tap Language & Keyboard, Tap Gingerbread Keyboard. Once you've completed this, open your stock text messaging app. Tap in the text box. When the keyboard opens, you will see a keyboard icon show up in the drop down bar at the top of your phone. Drag the bar down, Tap Select Input Method, Tap Gingerbread keyboard...
I am getting a little bit of lag between receiving a text message and then receiving a notification sound. Usually a good 8 secs pass from when I receive the sms and then the notification sound. At the same time, my phone is re-installing all my apps so for right now I'm just going to attribute the slowness to the processor being used up by the restoring settings and such.

once its done downloading and updating...reboot. ICS optimizes every time the Dalvik Cache is wiped...i.e. reboot...
I forgot to ask how is the security screen set up on this ROM?
Does it have the face recognition like everyone was saying?
Also if i install this ROM can i update to AT&T's ROM when its released or will my phone be seen as already updated unless i revert it back to stock first?

Let me look into the face recognition...haven't found it yet...
My phone has the "AT&T Software Update" button. As of now, when i tap it, it says "Software Up to Date"

It should be under your lock screen or security lock settings.
