you're probably right...i'm just curious to see if there was any difference at all(i don't think there will be)

If anyone does use the OTA update, i'd be interesting in seeing what version of software comes up in your phone afterwards. Ours is 4.0.3RD or something like that...i'm curious if its the same...

Of course this hits the day after I use the RUU that was floating around. I will try to update to see what happens but so far it's saying I'm already up to date.

I just tried to update via wifi. It took me through the steps of updating but said the server was busy. I imagine everyone with a Vivid is trying to update. I plan on trying again a little later. I'll post a screen shot if I get it to work.

Boy, the servers must be REAL busy. I've been trying manually to update and keep getting "Server Unavailable" all the time. I'll try late tonight and see what happens or I'll just wait till the pop-up appears saying there's an update available.

I was able to get the update over wifi at about 7:15 pm west coast time. I my one question is how do you turn off the animations? I can't find it in the settings menu.

Only way i have found it is to remove your clock or weather widget from your home screen.Add it back and when you do it will give you the option to disable full screen animations. You can open weather widget settings and also turn off weather sounds.

So this is weird. I went to Settings and clicked on Check for Update, and it said my phone was already up to date. So I figured maybe it's not available in my area yet. I went to the AT&T website that was posted to get info, then tried again. Now I get a message that the install was interrupted and I have to wait 23 hrs and 18 min to try again. Huh?

same here. I tried downloading the RUU on from the link he posted on his website but it kept timing me out and downloading real slow. I tried all night. I need to find another site that has it so that I can do it manually as well. Do you know of any other place that has .56 posted?

Ugh. I'd love to avoid that, if possible. Does updating via the phone wipe it as well?

I downloaded the update but even though I have plug ins set to always on I am unable to play flash content. When I go to update the adobe flash player in the market it keeps saying it is busy. Any suggestions?

So, for you guys who've already done this, if I'm running GO Launcher, is that a problem? Should I go back to Sense before updating and then restore a GO backup?

I wouldn't restore anything...its a brand new operating system. The launcher is just that...a partial overlay...its not an operating system...

You can save your launcher in a backup maybe but otherwise there's no need to worry about going back to sense before updating.I have not done it yet.Waiting until i make it home from work.I will update later tonight

There is no "sense" to go back to. You never left. Unless you're rooted, and running CM or AOSP based rom...

I understand that. What I meant was if the update wipes the phone, I don't want to have to start from scratch configuring how I've got GO set up. So would a restore of a GO backup be doable? Hope that makes better sense.

what would you be using to back it up? I only used GO very briefly...does it back itself up, or are we talking Titanium Backup?

GO has options in its Preferences for Backup and Restore to internal storage, which I'm assuming wouldn't get wiped. ??

Im not sure if it wipes internal storage or not.I would be safe and save the backup to your SD card or computer if possible

I would also be prepared for it to not work right upon restoring...just to be safe...different framework

@chall80, @woodsytattooman: thanks, guys, I already did save to my external card, just in case. And, yeah, I'm going to assume a restore might not work anyway.

The ICS update can now be found at the HTC website.
HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC Vivid? (AT&T) - Downloads
If you go this route follow directions from there website.

Since my phone blocked me from downloading the update until tomorrow, I grabbed it from HTC's site. The upgrade went fine, although having to do it via HTC Sync is a little annoying (very touchy program, it seems).

I now have the fun of re-installing all programs downloaded from the Market. An FYI about that: update the Market app to Play first, otherwise trying to download from the PC browser will crash the phone's app. Good news is that purchased apps are easily re-downloaded at no cost.

So when they say the phone is wiped, they're not kidding, lol. However, I could see that, if the internal storage was wiped, some phone backup must have been restored, cuz I found a JD settings backup file from a month ago, as well as some of my sound files. Interesting.

I haven't tried restoring the GO backup yet. I'll wait and see if that works later.

Edit: after exploring some more, it appears files in the internal storage "partition" aren't touched after all. I found my more current backup of JD, and the backup of GO worked (albeit without the apps I haven't re-downloaded yet. Cool.

I'm noticing that each time I reboot I get a message saying "Android is optimizing applications" and it proceeds to go through the 50 or so I have. Doesn't take that long, but is this the normal routine for ICS?
