Thumbs up Thank-you!!

THANK-YOU!!
Thank you so much, I got a lot of extra VERY needed space. When I got the wildfire s I was very disappointed at the lack of internal memory. This fixed it, I can move most of the apps to the sd now.

**For anyone that had just got their phone and was weary of doing this (like me), go for it, it works fine and doesn't void your warranty at all**

thanks again!

1. Connect the Phone to the PC in Charge Only mode
2. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD)
3. Type cd\ and press enter until you are in the root directory of your PC. This is denoted by a C:\>.
4. Navigate to the folder you extracted ADB to. In my case, the command would be "cd\SDK-Tools" (minus the quotes).
5. Type ADB Devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen. If you don't check, that USB Debugging is enabled and you're connected in Charge Only Mode.
6. Type ADB Shell, press enter.
7. Type pm setInstallLocation 2 press enter (it's important you enter this exactly as written as it's case sensitive)
8. Type Exit, then disconnect your phone.
9. PROFIT!

hi guys, i have tried to follow El Presedente's instructions which i copied above, but it doesnt seem to work. I follow the procedure to the letter, and when it is all done none of the apps can move to the SD card. From a copy of my CMD log which i have entered below, can you see if i am doing anything wrong? Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi kizzabizza, what apps are you trying to move and do you get any error messages? When you install new apps, are they installed to the SD Card?

Whenever I try to type in the command "adb devices" it tells me "adb" is not recognized as an internal or external command. I have no idea how to go about fixing this, any help here would be hot... thank you

El Presidente i'm trying to figure thkis out for the life of me. Ihave made it to step 3 and I get this message when I type in "adb devices" adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable batch file or command.

I have debugging mode on and I ran as admin. The only diff is that my main drive is D and not C for some reason, but I did unzip mini SDK as D:\SDK-Tools

Is there another SDK-Tools folder within D:\SDK-Tools? if you navigate to D:\SDK-Tools and type dir, what are the names of the files and folders listed?

From the command prompt, type cd\sdk-tools\sdk-tools, then start with the adb commands.

Well it appears to have worked after a little tinkering. all of it is case sennsitive. I tried what you had posted and it didn't work then I went and looked at the files and realized the first one was SDK-Tools and the second one wasn't. So I had to type cd\SDK-Tools\sdk-tools then continue with the adb commands. I'm going to go see what I can move now and then let ya know if it freed up as much memory as I was hoping it would. Thank you very much El Presidente

You're an ABSOLUTE legend!!!

For the last year, whenever I wanted to install something I would have to delete loads of stuff on my phone just to be able to install it due to the crappy memory on the HTC Desire... just done this and I can now install anything!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Yeah, I gather Desire users have it pretty tough memory wise too, glad it helped.

One thing i notice now is that no matter how many times apps update, even maps, internal memory usage does not increase at all.. in fact maps space usage actually decreased after updating it just now...
was this the usual scene without applying this command? i don't remember it myself..

Hi there, does this work on the HTC Salsa, and will it "force move" apps that came pre-installed? Cheers.

Yep, it should work for the salsa, but I'm not sure if you can move pre installed apps, sorry.

Right, so basically, as I have found so far, is that some apps that I have downloaded, have easily been moved to SD card using the in house program, and some of the downloaded ones have "the move to SD card" grayed out, and cannot be moved without your program, and thirdly what you are saying and my understanding of that is, that any pre-loaded apps cannot be moved with your program, has anyone tried? It's pity, as it is these pre-loaded ones that take up most of the memory. Anyhows cheers again then for your help.

My first post, thanks to El Presidente for this information. Great job!

I have ordered an unlocked Wildfire S and should receive it next week and after doing much reading about the memory issues i'll certainly be following this tip to force the apps to install on the SD card.

I just wanted to know if anyone has tested this with different speed SD cards and whether you could advise if there was a noticeable difference in speed?

I was planning to buy a 8GB micro sd card class 10 Samsung 24MB/s.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide and thanks for all the information provided here on the Wildfire S, its brilliant.

Welcome to AF Jessica, thanks for joining!

It should be fine with anything of Class 6 and above. It should technically work fine with any class card, but Class 6 and above is what I'd recommend for general use SD card wise anyway.

Google bought me here (I haven't looked to see if there is a similar thread for the HTC Desire) - BUT I did this to my HTC Desire and it literally feels like a new phone! I did a factory reset of all data, then carried this out. AMAZING! I can now use all the apps I've wanted to use for months, if not years! HUGE thanks for your help Mr. Presidente :-D

What apps are you trying to install? Some can't go on the SD and some apps need to have a part of them on the SD Card.

I'm guessing you can't install Skype to the SD as it runs in the background constantly (just as a widget does). Try with another app, see if that works.

Also, it sounds as though you've the full SDK installed? That will work, but you only needed the mini SDK I linked to in the initial post. If you typed the commands as I put them and your screen shots looked like mine, I'm guessing everything worked correctly.

Presedente, sorry dor disturbing you again with same question but now I have complied my question,
I have wildfire s a510b v.2.3.3, i have tried yr procedure to force install application to sd card, I have install full SDK from SDK manager but not sure either it is full or mini.

- In the C:\android\tools no ADB file inside and I look a text file ADB_has_moved and stating (The adb tool has moved to platform-tools/ If you don't see this directory in your SDK, launch the SDK and AVD Manager (execute the android tool) and install "Android SDK Platform-tools please also update your PATH environment variable to include the platform-tools/ directory, so you can execute adb from any location)
- But when I go from C:\android\platform-tools (platform-tools is the folder inside the Android folder) I found ADB file and from CMD prompt I have done all the procedure below procedure:

1. Connect my Phone to the PC in Charge Only mode
2. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD)
3. Type cd\ and press enter until I have reached the root directory of your PC. This is denoted by a C:\>.
4. Navigate to the folder where I have extracted ADB. In my case, the command would be "cd\
C:\android\platform-tools".
5. Type ADB Devices and press enter. Found serial number of my phone.
6. Type ADB Shell, press enter.
7. Type pm setInstallLocation 2 press enter
8. Type Exit, then disconnect your phone.

- When I download applications from my wirldfire S and install it, I notice some applications install directly in SD card and some is install in phone memory and need manually to move to SD card and my phone memory still killing.

I just installed 2 games 1 is Snooker and 2nd is Drag Racing, but drag racing still install in phone but Snooker install in SD card. Would highly appreciate if your teach us for this.

It only works for apps that are downloaded I believe, there's no harm in trying to move pre installed apps to SD though, the option will be greyed out if it doesn't work.

aghaalihaider, it's nothing to worry about. As I said before, there are some apps which it won't work for and some apps still need to keep a certain part themselves on the phone.

The process doesn't break anything and is reversible with the command pm setInstallLocation 0.

It doesn't matter where the ADB exe is, so wherever you have it, is fine.

If stuff some apps are installing to the SD Card by default (then it's worked).

Hy Presedente, I have one more important question. HTC Wildfire S have 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM, pls let me know how many memory (in MB) we can use for applications/games? As I notice when i go setting/applications/manage applications I saw in bottom of the screen total memeory 150MB (bottom left used memory and bottom right free memory total 150MB).

Of the 512MB ROM, 150MB is made available to the data partition, the remainder of the 512 is taken up by the OS itself.

Re RAM, there is 512MB, but only 418MB is made available. I'm not sure why you don't get access to the full 512MB, but there you go.

As far as I'm aware, you need root for links2sd to work? I can't comment though, it's not something I've ever used. To my knowledge it partitions part of your phones sd card and uses that space to simulate internal memory. I think it's quite a complex procedure by all accounts.

Default I don't know if this is me being a noob or something

But it doesn't seem to help whether the app is installed on my SD card or on my phone, it still takes up the same amount of internal memory either way. I have apps installed on my SD card, but they still take eat up my internal memory and uninstalling is seemingly the only thing that will help me. Is there some way to fix this?

I haven't been to up 20 MB of free space for ages. I can't install anything at all on my phone except one or two apps. My memory is used up by 31 MB of contacts and then the next biggest is 7.68 MB of dialer storage. I have no idea where all my internal memory is going

Hi El Presidente I need your help!!!!

Thanks for the posts. Apparently I could do the whole process normally but when I access Manage and try to move applications to the SD Card it appears on grey.
I saw in one of your posts "Yeah, a lot of the pre installed stuff you can't move as it's installed on the system partition, anything you've downloaded yourself should be ok to move though."

So here is whats happening I dont know how much space comes in the internal memory but I only have 9.50MB available right now with makes impossible even to install system or applications updates. My SD Card is 2GB and right now there's 1.86GB available that i cant use because everything is being installed in the internal memory by default. Even after all this process I cannot move all or some of the applications that came with the phone to the SD card. I dont think they would sell a phone full of applications that i dont use and cant uninstall and that at the same time I cant move to the sd card. I have 6 applications that I downloaded myself and all of them are already in the sd card and still I cannot install even a system update on my phone right now. Is there anything else I can do!?!?!?

Also in the bottom of applications> manage says 139MB used 11MB free....does that means that 128MB of my internal memory is all pre-installed stuff that I never used!?
