THANKS! It works
Although it didn't started at first. I restarted the phone. But no change in managing applications: "move to sd" button was grey and disabled. After about 5 minutes later - a mirracle the button was enabled and i managed to move some apps to sd card GREAT!
I've just downloaded an update for FB - and it automatically went to sd card, I guess. Because I can't see it in "apps on sd", but it asked about permission to write to sd card and the internal storage space didn't get lesser.

By the way, I've updated android to 2.3.5 before. So, this works with it.

That's all just my experience - maybe it will help someone

Yeah i think so,because when i extracted the sdk-tool file.it had two sdk folders in c drive.
So is all it because of the folder.

Have I understood this right?

I followed all commands, seemed to go to plan no problems.

All my apps that were possible to move to SD were already on the SD, and now I've done this, I dont seem to have any extra options... in other words it didnt do anything, is this right?

If you could already move the apps to sd, whats its purpose...

Clearly I am a bit confuse here... some help would be greatly appreciated

Should I try the process again... what should I be able to do now that I couldnt do before?

Did it again, still nothing changed... the only app that I downloaded that couldnt be moved to SD before is facebook, and it still cant... does that sound right?

Is it impossible to move all the junk from vodafone for instance to the sd?

Ive only got 16mbs free, same as I had before I did it is this right?

Have you definitely done all the pre-requisites? Your phone is connected in charge only mode?

Have you tried installing stuff? It should go straight to the SD.

Thanks El Presidente, its not my phone and I've had to give it back now. If I get chance I'll do it again and verify that new apps go straight to SD, I guess thats the way to check its worked.

Only thing that didnt seem according to your instructions was that I didnt have to confirm admin privileges at any point, but it used the ADB and responded exactly as in your screens.

Did anybody else have experience like me... ie no extra apps to be moved, everything remained greyed out?

A lot of the apps won't move completely, some apps will still retain a small portion of themselves on the phones internal memory. There's no getting around that unfortunately.

is there a way to completely move my apps in exact size? Because its still making my internal memory full. because only small portion of the apps memory goes in the sd card the biggest part goes to the internal memory. Is there any apps that can help? because my htc wildfire S is rooted. Thanks!

If you're rooted, you can try Links2SD? I've never tried it, but my understanding is you partition part of your SD Card to function as your internal memory.

I carried on with the process skipping the serial number part and it worked! so thanks a lot although a way to move contacts storage to the SD would be great as mine takes up 25mb due to facebook contacts etc. Thanks!

Very helpful post. I gained about an extra 20Mb of space which is extremely valuable. For those who cannot or do not want to root - this is an invaluable tip.

Many thanks.

Welcome to AF android991!

Are you typing adb devices in the correct folder via the command prompt? Try:

1. cd\sdk-tools\sdk-tools
2. adb devices

See if it picks it up then.

Thumbs up

Thank you, this tutorial is a life saver for HTC Wildfire S users!

I was already started to think about changing the phone... But with this awesome tip, I managed to free up 20mb of internal memory, and now my phone is working great.

Thank you for replying

I have since my last post discovered that the apps are no longer even on my phone they have been delete ..BUT the internal memory has not changed which leads me to believe that the apps are “lost”.

And when I tried and reinstakll them from the android market I get an error message
“Error”
“Application cannot be installed in the default installation location.”

Run through the process again, but this time, use 0 instead of 2 as your install location. Make sense? That will let the app decide the best place to install itself.

Does your SD Card definitely work?

No probs.

All 0 will do is revert the phone back to default settings so we can get your phone back to a usable state, then try and work out what went wrong.

The phone has since starting working again, I didn't do anything just after a while all the shortcuts for the apps appeared and worked.

The internal memory has not changed tho still 19mb free and apps like Facebook and Maps cannot be moved the SD card the button is greyed out.

Any idea on what has happened and why the internal memory is still very low?

Thanks

My phone prompted for a update to the operating system recent which I did.

I am now running Android 2.3.5 on my Wildfire.

Do I need to repeat this process to ensure apps are installed to the SD card?

Thanks.

Need help.....

I have downlaoded SDK and HTC Sync, done the ABD stuff but still getting 'Insufficient storage' message when I've downlaoded apps. I am using an 8gb sd card with 6gb available.
According to my storage, I have 12mb available in internal storage but still can't download a 3mb app!

Any suggestions?

You'll need HTC Sync installed (or at least the drivers that come with HTC Sync) and ADB (Android Debug Bridge) or the Android SDK. The SDK itself is a >100MB download and can be relatively difficult to install, however if you head here, look under the section entitled Mini SDK, click show, you can download a zip file called SDK-Tools.zip. Once downloaded, extract the contents of that folder to a folder of your choosing. I recommend somewhere easy, like C:\SDK-Tools as you'll need to navigate to it via a command prompt later.

You'll also need to enable USB Debugging on your phone, that's easily enough done by heading to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging. You'll get a warning message, but just ok that you'll be fine.

Once you've done all the above, the process is as follows:

1. Connect the Phone to the PC in Charge Only mode
2. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD, you'll need to run as Administrator)
3. Navigate to the folder you extracted ADB to. In my case, the command would be "cd\SDK-Tools" (minus the quotes).
4. Type adb devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen. If you don't check, that USB Debugging is enabled and you're connected in Charge Only Mode.
5. Type adb shell, press enter.
6. Type pm setInstallLocation 2 press enter (it's important you enter this exactly as written as it's case sensitive)
7. Type Exit, then disconnect your phone.
8. PROFIT!

You can now move apps that are already on the handset to the SD Card. Head to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Click an app -> Move to SD Card. All new apps will install to the SD Card.

It's worth mentioning that apps with active widgets cannot be moved and a certain portion app will remain on the phones data partition, but this goes a long way to assist with the lack of internal memory!

Pics for the ADB stuff below:

Hi, I finished the process without any errors but I can't move any apps to sd and I also tryed to install an app and it installed to phone. The "move to SD" button is grayed out. What I can do? My phone is not rooted and I use Android 2.3.5.

Here is a game i downloaded from Play store and it can't be moved to SD.

Have you guys rebooted since running the process, try that. If that doesn't work, try running the process again.

It worked. Thanks a lot mate. I think that the problem was with that command that is case sensitive.
