Check if you're in the right folder, is there another SDK-Tools folder within the one you're already in?

Hello,

New to the forum, thanks to all for providing a site to discuss (and tweak) the Wildfire S phone. I performed all steps as described in the thread, and it seems to have worked, but when I go into Manage Applications, and try to move something (like HTC Likes, for example), the move to SD card button is grayed out. What apps have others been able to move to the SD card? Or will apps installed after this tweak be installed the SD card?

thanks very much for the tutorial, very easy

only problem i have now is same as above, was only able to move a couple of apps that i wasnt able to before over, the biggest was google play services which was only about 1.3meg

the vast majority of apps, both space hungry and smaller, are still unmovable, not sure if ive missed something??

Default Banging my head against the wall

Hey there. Great instructions and I don't doubt this works. However, after trying to go through these steps multiple times and knowing that I have done everything to a T, I am still not able to transfer apps to the SD card via Manage Applications. Move to SD as an option is still greyed. I did the command pm getInstallLocation and the prompt tells me it is located on the external, not the internal. So everything worked, the phone is just not allowing it.

I am using a HTC Wildfire. Model number is HTC-A510a. Android version 2.3.3 and HTC sense version 2.1.

Any help would be great as I am out of space, even after clearing caches and uninstalling updates.

Default Thanks a lot for this post !!

Hi,

The described process went through well. Post this, I could see the options of 'Move to SD Card' for Facebook and Whatsap apps.

But, when I try clicking the move to sd card button, it jus stays grey ... says 'moving' for infinite time...Nothing happens!

Then I thought I'd leave the facebook app alone since it was pre-installed in the phone.

I uninstalled whatsap and tried to install it from playstore again and it continually shows an error msg

'Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card'

Can you help me out here ??

Radcore, I went ahead and moved your post into the Wildfire S forum. The phone will not let you move system apps even after the change. Can you move any of your user apps?

System apps (pre-installed) cannot be moved even after the change.

As for Whatsup, a few apps (and all widgets) won't run from the sd card. You may have to leave out on the device.

Hope that helps!

Smile Sweet!

Thanks for posting something so helpful, I always like my phone but the lack of internal storage was driving me nuts.

I had a bit of trouble at first, but I realized I didn't download mini-sdk, I downloaded the standard method, which was making my life much more difficult.

After downloading mini-sdk and actually following directions literally (What an idea) it worked so fast, and so easily.

Thanks so much!

I cannot move anything other than what I have installed after purchase. These "downloads" are automatically installed on the SD card now. But yeah, I cannot move anything. It is all the grey button.

What I really want to move is Facebook, especially after the big update. It would free up at least 15 MB, considering some is left behind. But yeah, I'm sure I would find other material to be moved when need be. Butttt it's not taking it.

Default Sweet too soon

So, I was stoked when the CMD commands all went as you said they would, everything looked great.

But then when I tried to install an app, it said I had insufficient storage available. I realized my phone wasn't seeing my SD card, so I powered it off, took out the SD, put it back in, powered up, and it recognized it again. Good. So I tried again...

Insufficient storage available. I tried a different app, insufficient storage. I have 4.5 gigs available on my SD, a measly 12 mb of internal, but the app I was trying to install was only 1.6 mb (Google tasks).

Any sage advice? Is it possible to redo the process and see if it works better a second time?

New to the site. Just wanted to say thank you for all the info provided.

An Android tweaking virgin, I got there in the end when I had all the software installed and followed the directions exactly.

Once again, thanks

Confused Problem !! >.<

Hello,
Okay, here's my problem,
It all works until step 4. Type adb devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen.
What I have on CMD is :
C:\Windows\system32>cd\SDK-Tools

C:\SDK-Tools>adb devices
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\SDK-Tools>

WHAT DO I DO
Several other people have had this problem but there's never been an explanation which really worked (or which I could understand being a novice ...)

Do you have another SDK-Tools folder within SDK-Tools?

Try cd\sdk-tools\sdk-tools

Muchos gracias to El Presidente!1!11!! I'm a newbie at doing anything to my A510c (Virgin Mobile), but couldn't resist when I saw this great workaround to this phone's big problem. I had given up on being to install any apps. Now I can!! The only minor glitch was when I got a "[something HTC] not working" message after installing HTC Sync. I restarted my computer and everything after that went smooth as silk. Big hugs to you, EP!

(im using windows 7 on parallels, on a mac book pro, if that matters)

Thank you

Default Problem!

hi and thanks for this thread!im new here so i dont know much..
everything was ok until when it comes to step 6 i type

pm setInstallLocation 2 and i get

pm-get-install-location: returns the current install location.
NOTE: This is only intended for debugging; using this can cause applications to break and other undesirable behavior.
0 [auto]: Let system decide the best location
1 [internal]: install on internal device storage
2 [external]: install on external media

what do i type? i type 2 it says some error like not found or something like that, i type pm setInstallLocation 2 again and i get the same thing..WHAT TO DO??

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Thanks. This worked better than trying to re-partition SD card. Only a few apps were able to move. The ones I really wanted to move, calendar, e-mail, people, contacts, etc. were still grayed out. Maybe I can remove the accounts, uninstall the apps, install the apps new onto the SD Card, then add the accounts back in. Would you know how to uninstall apps?

Thank you.

Just bought Wildfire S tonight on ebay (should get it in a few days), but have read this thread a couple of times in last week or two, as I am nervous about rooting the phone and this seems a safer option.
I have 2 laptops, one running XP and the other W7. Which would you recommend I use? I know it probably won't make a difference, but if there is a preference...
Thanks

I used Windows 7, but it shouldn't make a difference. Just use whatever you're most comfortable with.

I once tried rooting another WFS with windows 7 and for some reason the laptop wouldn't detect the phone even though the drivers were installed. THen switched to an xp laptop and it worked perfectly. So I would say go for windows xp. But hey, it was probably an isolated problem so...up to you

Default Does this work on standard Wildfire?

I'll get the (ebay) Wildfire S tomorrow, but my granddaughter is getting an iphone for Christmas, and I can have her Wildfire to practice on!

Will this tip work, or is it Wildfire S specific?

Thanks

Hi, Newbie to the forum

I've followed all of the instructions here and it all went fine.

However I'm still not able to move Apps to the SD card, things like Ebay and Facebook etc. The option is still grayed out.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry, I have a Wildfire S

I haven't used this methos but if I'm not wrong, even with this method, it is not possible to move all of the apps. You're best way in my opinion is to root it

Hi El Presidente,

First I would like to thank for the wonderful solution. I just have one question regarding "Android SDK"....like where I can download this and how to install this? Little more detail would help me.

Once downloaded, extract the contents of that folder to a folder of your choosing. I recommend somewhere easy, like C:\SDK-Tools as you'll need to navigate to it via a command prompt later.

It's linked in the first post.

It's not the full SDK, but it's all that's required here.

El Presidente, this thread looks like it's exactly what I need. I feel like I'm almost there, but just not quite... It's always the same when it come to me and technology!

I think my missing link is that I've got HTC Sync on my PC, but it's not recognising my phone when I connect it to the PC. I've been searching for the answer but don't get what I'm supposed to do. I read something about copying 'htcsync.exe' over from my PC to my phone I think, but I can't find this on my PC (not on the phone either). Is this what I should be doing...?

Hope you can help!!

It's probably better if HTC Sync isn't running tbh, you only need HTC Sync because it comes with the drivers needed to allow your phone to talk to the PC. As long as ADB can see the phone, you're good.

Thanks for that!

I thought that this was the issue because, when I tried out your instructions yesterday, at the bit where it's supposed to show the phone's serial number, I got a long list of data that didn't mean anything to me. I just wanted to narrow down why it wouldn't work for me and thought this would be it. Just did exactly the same as yesterday, got the serial number on screen and it looks like it's worked!

muchas gracias!

Excellenté!

Some stuff can't be moved/installed, but you're good to go with most.

Sad

I give it up on this >:C
It doesn't want to work with me.
I put it on Charging but USB Debug is on.
I got HTC Sync.
Full SDK.
Using Command Prompt on Admin mode.
And there isn't another SDK-Tools folder in the SDK-Tools folder.
Still won't show

You'll need HTC Sync installed (or at least the drivers that come with HTC Sync) and ADB (Android Debug Bridge) or the Android SDK. The SDK itself is a >100MB download and can be relatively difficult to install, however if you head here, look under the section entitled Mini SDK, click show, you can download a zip file called SDK-Tools.zip. Once downloaded, extract the contents of that folder to a folder of your choosing. I recommend somewhere easy, like C:\SDK-Tools as you'll need to navigate to it via a command prompt later.

You'll also need to enable USB Debugging on your phone, that's easily enough done by heading to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging. You'll get a warning message, but just ok that you'll be fine.

Once you've done all the above, the process is as follows:

1. Connect the Phone to the PC in Charge Only mode
2. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD, you'll need to run as Administrator)
3. Navigate to the folder you extracted ADB to. In my case, the command would be "cd\SDK-Tools" (minus the quotes).
4. Type adb devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen. If you don't check, that USB Debugging is enabled and you're connected in Charge Only Mode. If you get an error stating" 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command", it might well you've another SDK-tools folder within the original. If this is the case type "cd\sdk-tools\sdk-tools" and try again.
5. Type adb shell, press enter.
6. Type pm setInstallLocation 2 press enter (it's important you enter this exactly as written as it's case sensitive)
7. Type exit, then disconnect your phone.
8. PROFIT!

You can now move apps that are already on the handset to the SD Card. Head to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Click an app -> Move to SD Card. All new apps will install to the SD Card.

It's worth mentioning that apps with active widgets cannot be moved and a certain portion app will remain on the phones data partition, but this goes a long way to assist with the lack of internal memory!

Pics for the ADB stuff below:

Done everything correct and same but still couldn't figured it out what app can be move to SD card help please

What Android version is the Desire on? I think people have said it doesn't work on some of the later versions of Gingerbread, but there's no harm in giving this a go. You don't need to download any more files, you should be good to go with these.
