Hello, the sanei has a different command, 'set-install-location 2' instead of 'setInstallLocation 2'

but even typing in the correct thing it still doesn't work.
I'm trying to post pic to show but can't.

Nice one here......this is quite relieving cos it has been depressing for me all this while not being able to install directly on sd. 150mb internal memory sucks!

But the installed apps still have their data stored on the internal storage irrespective of where they are installed. please what can be done about this to ensure that even the apps data are stored on sd.

Default Mac and Wi-Fi calling.

Hello all (Third post ever):

1st:
How would El Presidente's original post be modified for those of us who use a Macintosh? (We have a pair of Mac Mini's running OS X version 10.6.8, "Snow Leopard".)

2nd:
I guess I'm still a bit naive regarding Android terminology. I can't figure out if El Presidente's post means that his technique does or does not "Root" the phone (as I think is the terminology).

Assuming that it does...

3rd:
I came to this post only after having read (and responded to) this one:
* Apps2sd vs Link2sd (and internal storage) explained
...as a result, some of the below is redundant if you've already read my response in that forum. I'll preview it by saying that it explained to me that there _IS_ a difference between "App2sd" and"Apps2sd", and I was NOT crazy to think there was something very fundamental that I didn't understand.

---

We are long time subscribers to T-Mobile (USA). We're NOT going to switch to another carrier. One thing T-Mobile does that nobody else (in the US) does, is "Wi-Fi Calling" {...and we're still "grandfathered" in under the old plan}. This is one feature we have and want to keep in an old Samsung T339 flip phone (non-Android of course). When we needed it replaced via an insurance replacement (to make a loooong story short) we were instead supplied with an HTC Wildfire S. So, now I'm trying to make more memory available on what is now a spare phone for us, _BUT_ I can NOT sacrifice the "Wi-Fi Calling" firmware that's built into this phone.

It's my understanding that as a GENERAL rule of thumb, if I want to keep the Wi-Fi Calling firmware intact, this means I can NOT flash the ROM in this phone. (Yes, I know, there is one ROM that may work, but its legality is questionable.) So, there's no "CyanogenMod" in our phone's future(s).

As a result, I am limited in my choice of the Application-to-SD-Card software choices that this forum's topic is discussing.

I currently have a 4GB (Sandisk) microSD card in the phone (no speedcode printed on its surface).
I _AM_ willing to go to my local "MicroCenter" store and purchase a 16 or 32GB microSD card (probably speedcode 10) and place a partition on it. However, as of this writing that has not (yet) been done.

With these pieces of information tossed up for your consideration...
Does anyone have a suggestion as to which app I should choose?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Can't comment on he other stuff at the moment, but I'm pretty sure when El Presidente gets a hold of the mac adb files, he could sort out some mac instructions for you. He needs to have a look at the mini SDK anyway.

He can be quite forgetful so feel free to PM him and give him a little nudge if he doesn't get something sorted soon.

Does that tab have an external SD Card or a virtual one?

Is that ICS or above? This process is for Gingerbread or below. Try using pm set-install-location 2 instead.

What apps are you trying to move, certain apps can't be moved unfortunately. Stuff like Gmail, Facebook etc (anything that came pre installed on the phone).

Default Thanks - but please help

Thank you for some very clear instructions. This unfortunately is still not doing the trick for me. Please advice.

I have a HTC Wildfire S. It is on Android 2.3.5 (I wonder if that is the problem?).

All your instructions worked, the serial number came up - the instructions worked fine. When I tried to uninstall and reinstall certain applications (yahoo mail, messenger etc) it reinstalls them back to the phone and not the SD card.

Please can you advice? If the advice is 'to root' - I would appreciate a link to a site with simple to follow instructions like you have put here :-)

Thanks in advance!

Similar story to the above, I followed all the instructions, I have HTC Desire on 2.2 Android, and it is rooted.

All passes without trouble, yet when i try to install an app (Plague inc.) in this case from Google play store, it keeps filling up internal memory which i have about 30 mbs left, fills it up reports error and leaves me with that warning until i reboot my htc, then the 30mb get freed again....

Thanks in advance.

Default Worked Feb 2013!

I know this is an old post-but I just followed instructions in the original post and they worked! Facebook is now on my SD card. Thank you so much!

I did have to try about a dozen times before everything worked out. I kept getting the 'device offline' problem, and would uncheck the USB debugging and plug everything back in-which worked about 30% of the time.

Then I couldn't get the adb shell command to respond-it would just hang up. But eventually it got through. I did the same exact steps each time-so I don't know why it took so many tries...but oh well. It worked!

Default you beauty

Working fine for me also, followed instructions in initial post,

if you don't want/need htc sync:
when you plug your phone in you can mount it as a disk drive and run setup_3....exe to install htc sync, first it does the drivers then you can cancel
before it does the full install. Gives you HTC driver in start menu on XP

Freed up 20 meg for me (doesn't work for some pre-installed apps see post 53)
but should buy me some more time before i have to root it!

Thanks

Hi,
I just tried this and I think it worked - it listed my device. Afterwards I was able to move a few more apps to the SD card, but none of the pre-installed apps like FB or all the HTC stuff can be moved. (I also use the free app 'App2SD' which alerts you when you can move an app to the SD card)

Yeah, the pre installed apps sit on the system partition and without root, they're unmovable unfortunately.

That's a shame. Some replies on this thread said they had been able to move Facebook etc. It's a pity this phone is so flawed as it's a great piece of hardware - good quality camera with flash, brilliant music player. I love it's compact size.

I don't like the Desire C - slightly bigger and no flash for the camera.

The Desire S is on ICS? I think the command would be pm set-install-location as opposed to pm setinstalllocation.

Hi - Thanks to El Pres for this tip, which finally gave me a decent amount of memory back. When I ran it as per instructions it worked fine . . .

Except that (as said above) some of the 'pre-installed' stuff still won't move; in my case the main culprit being 'Maps' which uses more memory than any other app. Ah well.

The other problem I found was that - having moved what I could - 'BBC News' (moved to the SD Card) wouldn't update any more, and 'Juice Defender' failed to load itself. When I restored 'BBC News' to the phone memory, both it and 'Juice Defender' worked properly again.

Any comments from anyone?I still have a better memory situation than before, so I am mostly happy.

Mike Sheffield.

Hi!
Thanks for a good guide.

My problem is that I cannot install system updates anymore. There is always one available but it won't install because of modified programs it say.

I tried factory reset and changing my SD card, but it didn't work. Everything is wiped but the phone will not let me install updated.

I also tried to reverse the process and setInstallLocation to 1 again, but that didn't work either.

Any suggestions?

Same result.

I double checked with 'root checker' to see if anything happened there, but it says that I don't have admin access.

This didn't work on my HTC Wildfire S.
I could see my device attached,
All the DOS commands 'worked',

But after I did 'exit' and unplugged my phone, it was all exactly the same and still does not have the option to move certain apps to the SD card...

How come it works for other people??????

Default Asking for password

Hi. Very new to the forum. Love the posts. However, I am getting something that I have not seen addressed. When I download the sdk-tools (whether the full version or the mini), when I try to unzip the folder to extract the programs, it tells me that I need a password. What do I do from there?

Thank you soo much! Though can't seem to move either the gmail app or the Facebook for HTC app to sd card, even though I've deleted their widgets. Any ideas why?

They're system apps and installed on a different part of the phones internals; they can't be moved without root unfortunately.

Mr President: I am new to this forum.

My problem is: I already could move some applications installed on my phone HTC Wildfire S which is running on Android to the Phone. However, many applications don't have the option "move to SD" active but greyed out.

I am wondering if your solution would enable move all the applications which are showing grey display too ? Why this question arised for me is because, I saw your statement of caution saying, some applications cannot be moved. I also have a understanding that, only those applications that need various permissions, cannot be moved to SD card.

So, my question is, if I follow your app all my apps I can move and further all apps I download would directly be installed on SD card by default ? Or is your solution only for people who cannot move any application to SD card, unlike in my case, where I can send few applications to SD Card already.

Please tell me, so that I will go-ahead and try your solution. However, when I already tried your steps, I got stuck in 2nd command. Firstly, it didn't showed me the devices attached. Don't know whats the problem. After reading some posts, I reckon, it is due to HTC Sync unavailability. I am downloading htc_sync_setup_3.3.21. Hope it supports HTC Wildfire S :S

And, another general question. I have 2GB card. Can I purchase some 8GB card or so for my handset ? If so, how can I transfer my data from this 2GB to 8GB ? I do have 9 in 1 card reader in my Dell Laptop, however, this 2GB card couldn't be inserted in any slot lol Could you help me please ?

You can't move any of the pre installed apps to your SD Card either, so stuff like Facebook, Gmail etc. That has to stay on the phones memory.

You can't move any app that has an active widget and some apps just won't move (it's the way the dev made them).

See above. A lot depends on the dev too, whether he or she has made the app SD Card Installable.

Yeah, I think all versions of HTC Sync are compatible with all HTC Phones? If you head to the official Wildfire S page on the HTC site, that will set you on the right track.

8GB should work. If you want to copy stuff over, just copy it to your PC, then transfer copy back across to your new SD Card. If you get HTC Sync working, it's easy enough to do whilst the card is in the phone.

Ok Mr President, thank you for the welcome message and your quick reply.

Well, I am happy to say that, I have installed HTC Sync and could perfrom the steps you told successfully. However, I could able to push only one more app that was earlier immovable to the SD card now.

And I am confused with memory things. The phone memory shows, 134 MB used now and only 16 MB free lol. Does it mean my HTC Wildfire S memory is only 150 MB >

Also, as you rightly said, I couldn't move pre-installed apps. And, some other apps I couldn't move.

Could you please explain me the following:

1. How the apps that I installed on phone moves to SD card and runs automatically if I move it to SD card. I mean, what I am trying to understand is, does it included uninstalling from phone, installing in SD card behind the scenes ? I am not able to understand, just for my curiosity.

2. I did install sync, but I don't know how to copy everything from phone (Contact numbers, pic, and other miscellaneous) to computer. As because, when I try to connect to Lappy, it says, HTC sync couldn't be recognized on computer

3. I hate FuckBook lol, I am just an Orkut fan for many of the reasons, although I no more use it. So is there any option for me to delete my FB app from my HTC ? I don't see any option to delete.

Thank you for guiding me.

Ok Mr President. On researching stuffs myself, I got some learning myself on Sync. I made the sync to work now. However, I don't see it to be useful lol because still I am not sure how to sync contact numbers alone from Mobile to PC. So that, even if I lose this contact numbers by losing the phone, I have some backup. Well if you have any directions for this, please let me know.

Also, it will be great if you can help me with my questions 1 and 3 at your convenience.

Thank you for the care.
