Sad Variant System Version

Hi,

I'm an absolute noob with anything related to fixing phones and really hope someone can point me to or provide me with a guide that a ten year old could follow to fix the problem I have.

I've done nothing custom with the phone at all (Wildfire S). I've installed apps from the play store but that's it other than changing the SD card. However, when the phone checks for an update it says one is available in the usual manner and I select to download. The download starts but then it gives the following error:

'Variant system version - We have determined that your phone may be running a modified version of its system software. For your protection, we cannot update your phone. Please revert your phone to the official HTC system software to update your phone. If you did not modify your system software or would like help reverting your system please contact us via the support section at HTC - Mobile Phones, Smartphones, Cell Phones, Tablets'

A factory reset hasn't worked and HTC / T-mobile were not help (at least not for free - at least 50-200). The phone is running...

Android version 2.3.3
HTC Sense 2.1
Software number 1.33.401.3
Carrier - UK T-mobile

Ideally I would like to just have it back as it should be. I'm not worried about losing anything on the SD etc.

If you could help it would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Sam

This is quite strange...Is this a GSM phone you are using?

Try this and then tell me the following:
Shut dow the phone, remove the battery, put it back and press power button plus vol down button. This will allow you to enter HBOOT mode.
At the top, tell me what you see
**LOCKED**, **UNLOCKED** or **RELOCKED**
And tell me if you see S-ON or S-OFF just below

Hi, thanks for replying. It says:

Marvel PVT Ship S-On RL

I have no idea what that means, any further help is appreciated.

Thanks

S-on means that your phone is locked and S-off means it's unlocked and you can root it.
Let me know whether it's LOCKED or UNLOCKED
It's quite strange...If your phone says LOCKED, then it's some strange problem and the best would be to take it to the HTC centre.

My phone is S-On (Locked). Yes, I do find this whole thing weird and I'm reluctant to send it to HTC because of the cost.

Is there no way I can just restore the operating system to how it was when I bought it? I know the factory restore doesn't work. Is the recovery option in the boot menu something different that might work?

Could I install a new operating system? This is probably at the extremes of my ability but with a full set of instructions I might work it out. And is it safe, not just for the phone but for any subsequent data I then put in - passwords etc.

You can actually re isntall the rom. Here is the quote from CafeKampuchia:
Quote:
1. Download the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for your phone here:
[ROM]Marvel Shipped ROM Collection - xda-developers

2. Install HTC Sync, Android SDK tools and Java runtime as per the opening section of this rooting guide:
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s-all-things-root/480954-guide-how-root-wildfire-s-s-finally.html

This allows the phone to connect to your computer for the steps below.

3. Fully charge the battery. Then boot the phone into bootloader by pulling the battery for a couple seconds and replacing it, holding down volume and pressing the power button.

4. Once in bootloader, select Fastboot using the volume rocker and pressing power. Then connect the USB cable. You should see FASTBOOT USB.

5. Run the RUU from Windows and follow the wizard.

What happened or displayed on PC screen when you run the RUU on PC?

Try pressing <Power on> button for 10 seconds and say whats up.

Everything appeared fine on the PC, I followed the instructions on the wizard that came up and there were no error messages.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 10 seconds (saw that somewhere on the web) but to no avail. As soon as the power button is touched the screen flashes on but just black, then off again and on etc.

I'm guessing it is totally dead so am sending off to T-mobile to see if they can fix it for a reasonable price - you can get a new Wildfire S now for about 100 and second hand 60 if you have a good look.

Not sure what other options I have as I still have 8 months left on the contract. I'd rather not be stuck with my old Nokia 6300, particularly as the mic on it is broken and I have to use the headphones to talk to people!

I'll happily let you know how the T-mobile attempt at fixing goes but would welcome any suggestions in the meantime for people in similar situations.

Thanks
