Since metro pcs launched 4g i was wondering if the ascend would be able to use 4g. I am also hoping that metro will get 3g if 4g is only compatible with their one phone that says it supports 4g LTE.
The Ascend will not support 4g. It doesn't have a 4g antenna but will benefit slightly because of decreased bandwidth use from users that are in 4g. Instead of using 3g bandwidth, they will be using 4g, which means more 3g bandwith for you. P.S. 2.2 will arrive first quarter 2011 between Jan or march

If you are in a city that supports 4G and you have the Ascened, you got screwed. The old 3G towers are the new 4G ones, so for dallas and detroit, there simply isn't 3G anywhere.

Exactly, basically all you have is either 1X or WiFi...no 4G or 3G on Metro with the Ascend.

If this is true then it would appear that MetroPCS has sold a phone to it's customers that is obsolete in less than two months after purchasing it. This doesn't sound right.
But that's metro for you, no? The reason they still sell the ascend is because 4G isn't in all markets 3G is. Just so happens that the poster abefore me, and myself live in 4G markets.

This isn't just MetroPCS and the Ascend, however. It's all android phones. The android manufacturers are so busy coming out with new and better systems that by the time you get yours activated there's something better on the market and yours is obsolete!
LOL
It's something Android users have to get used to. Always something bigger and better. (Remember when smaller was better in cell phones?)

In a nutshell...yeah, that's pretty much it. Every carrier can be guilty of that, I bet there are tons of users who are pissed they signed on with Verizon only to here a few weeks later the iPhone is coming out on their new carriers network.

OMG! You are so right! I was talking to one of them this weekend and she is REALLY upset. Says she always wanted the iphone and now she's stuck with her HTC Droid.
Poor child!

No see, yeah in a sense that's true, but what Metro did was slightly more underhanded. They announced the 4G network before the two Metro Droids dropped, so they knew before hand that certain markets, Dallas, Detroit, Philly, etc. would never see 3G. Because they converted the 3G towers to the 4G ones. I actually called tech support about this, and they were talking down to me like I was dumb.
"Does your phone say 1x? Then you have 3G speed."
(Never mind the fact that my phone has a symbol that literally says 3G that shows up at start-up and goes away.)
Fine. But when I tether my phone, and download speeds max out at say 20 kb/s in the middle of the night when speed is highest, you can't tell me that is 3G And was with a USB tether not bluetooth so naturally faster. Didn't mention CDMA or EVDO on account that I JUST might be wrong in assuming 3G has to run on EV-DO, but they're still misleading folks. They scrapped the 3G network in certain cities to make the 4G and yet they're still selling 3G phones and telling people "all our phones run on 3G no phone that doesn even works on our network" and my friend, also a Metro customer has a Samsung Freeform which is most definitely not 3G.
-end rant-

I love the fact that their hollow plastic Ascend phone you can mess with at the store shows "3G" and full bars on the top of the graphics, not to mention the box of the ascend shows 3G on the phone. I also asked the guy and he told me that 1x = 3G too.

It says 3G because it's 3G on Cricket's network, and I guess Metro used the same picture.

I'm in total agreement that MetroPCS is basically practicing deceptive trade practices in selling this phone to users who think they are getting 3G and they know you won't be able to get it.
I'm really not sure their CSRs even know this however. Cricket and Metro have the WORST Cust Svc.
I don't know what users who don't find these forums do. Just give up eventually?
hahaha
Sad...really sad.

You're right. I heard it would be toward the end of the year and that's why I think they will be getting a couple of very nice new phones...like (I HOPE) the IDEOS X5 and X6.
I borrowed my friend's HTC Desire (Most definitely 3G). And used the same USB tether method with my laptop, and no surprise I got speeds slightly slower than say, your average DSL modem. Then, I switched phones and tried again with my Ascend, I chose a site I know that can support massive download speeds (highest was 1.5 mb/s actual download speed using wi-fi on my laptop at school), and again no surprise I topped out at about 20-25 kb/s. 1x=3G right? Told this to customer services and they had no idea how to react.
Yeah, probably but again, the wi-fi still works so I can rely on that on campus when I don't feel like setting up shop with my laptop. That and even the 1x speed allows me to sream almost seemlessly with Skyfire (best browser ever btw cause you can force desktop mode in sites other than youtube.) anyway.

I wish they had just rounded off the corners a tad. But the trend is towards bigger is better. The Ascend is just perfect for me size wise. I wish the screen was bigger but my hand isn't that big so.......if it's gonna be uncomfortable why not just carry around your Ipad! LOL
However, I do still want the X6!!!
I didn't hear a rumour about the EVO. When did you hear it?
Since Cricket and Sprint have 'partnered up' so to speak, the chances of Cricket getting the EVO sounds more logical.
Priced at $199....it's a bargain but there's an additional mandatory $10 bucks a month for 4G. Hmmmm.....what will people who don't have access to 4G do?
Thanks for the info, Crumb!

I do recall where I read it.
During the CES they interviewed Matt Stoiber, V.P. of Cricket Devices and he said they would be getting 4G LTE late this year.

Me neither but I'm honestly not wild about the idea of paying an extra ten bucks a month for any phone. And it's not JUST the money. It's also the idea that they keep sucking us in.

Well that's one of the good things about cricket, no contracts! As long as you can afford it, you have service. But, I agree with the whole 'sucking us in' thing, it really is ridiculous.

Yeah! My bill now is $64.25 a month. If they keep going up I might as well be back with Verizon. Nahhh....there's no way on that! I don't want to be owned by anyone or anything. LOL
Certainly not a cell phone carrier. hahaha

I believe the customers with SPRINT who don't have 4G coverage still get stuck w/the extra fee.It makes sense,if you don't think about it.

That's the tradeoff on Cricket VS MetroPCS, I guess. You have legitimate 3G, we have lower bills. I have the equivalent of Cricket's "Android Plan" on MetroPCS, as I'm required to take the $50/mo plan with this phone, but the $50 is taxes and fees included. Plus, with having 2 phones between myself and the wife, it knocks off $5/mo from my plan, not sure if it does the same for hers or not.
There is another alternative that someone recently turned me on to, if that price is getting a little too steep: Virgin Mobile. They have the Optimus V, which is pretty much the same as the other Optimus "letter series" phones, and their plans are $25/$40/$60/mo depending on how much talk time you want. 300, 1200, or unlimited minutes by price, respectively. And they do have 3G. Had I seen that and done a little more research, I quite likely would have gone that route rather than MetroPCS.

Just a little food for thought.
Well, to be fair...$5 bucks of that is for insurance. LOL Probably a rip off but I have it anyway. As for Virgin Mobile I don't know what it's like where I live. I don't know anyone who has it. I really don't want to worry about 'limits' ....on anything! LOL
If I want to talk 50 minutes a month or 5,000, I want to be able to do it.
So ...No Virgin for me! uh......LOL

Before I got my ascend,i considered getting the samsung intercept on virgin. The $25 plan only has 300 minutes but unlimited text and data. I was on a really cheap cricket plan, so I thought about keeping my cricket to talk on, and getting the virgin to play with (so to speak) lol
The Huawei Ascend is MetroPCS and Cricket's extremely affordable Android handset, coming in at $150 off-contract. For that kind of money, don't expect much in terms of bang for buck. You'll get a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel c... Read More
