Default How to pronounce Huawei (Ascend) !

HUAWEI is pronounced: Hua-wey or WAH-way ?

(Chinese: 华为; pinyin: Huáwei) officially transliterates in English to Huawei (pronounced as "hua wey" in English). The character 华 means Chinese, but can also be used as an adjective to mean splendid or magnificent. The character 为 means action or achievement. The two characters combined (Huáwei) can be variously translated as "achievement", "magnificent act", "splendid act", or "China can".

Huawei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And then another source. Here's the audio pronunciation. Listen! WAH-way!

They pronounce it WAH-way

And then there is the Google Translation pronunciation! You can click there to listen there too!

First post has been edited to reflect Wikipedia's pronunciation.

I read at the Official Huawei.com site that the correct english pronunciation is Ha-way.

I can't find it now but this is from Wiki...

too many people say Whah-way for it to be ha-way...whah-way would make more sense since there is a letter U right after H

don't want to post a new thread so I thought I would post this here.

I read somewhere how to get angry birds working and I wanted to share it.

all you need to do is press the power button (top right) to lock the screen when you first hear
sound and nothing shows. when you unlock the screen you will be able to play.
its a bit choppy but if set CPU is set to performance it does OK. :-)

I sure did! LOL Cause I read it at that Huawei.com site.

In my research today I have seen and heard it pronounced more ways than you can shake a stick at. LMAO

Maybe this is why they are going to be calling their new phones the IDEOS X5 and X6 (without the Huawei in front).

That sounds like the way the Google Translation listen link to the right pronounces it. Did you hear that one? Their link on the left sounds completely different. More like Hu-ah-way.

I've honestly never seen a word so difficult to pronounce.

I don't have audio on my work PC, so I can't listen to it. But, sounds like the left link you're referring to is how your average, run of the mill American would pronounce it.

For me, I see a two syllable word, and "ei" generally is not pronounced with a long "e" sound, which is a common mistake. More often than not, in foreign languages, when you have two vowels together like that, the pronunciation will be that of the second vowel, whereas in English, oftentimes it ends up being a mix of the two, such as "ei" being pronounced with a long "a" sound.

Side note: grammar is a pet peeve of mine, and as an example, it drove me nuts when Mortal Kombat came out, listening to all the people who pronounced Raiden's name as RAY-DEN, instead of RHY-DEN.

Thank you for that very nice rationalization of your interpretation of how it should be pronounced and why.

I actually didn't have a clue how to pronounce it as I bought mine online and don't know anyone else who has one and didn't have anything to go by other than my own attempts and to be honest I have been calling it Ha-wah-yee (just like the state). LOL

I wish I could find where in the official Huawei.com site they said that in English the pronunciation would be Ha-way.

But I've tried and I can't find it again. It's a huge site....they have so much going on.

I really don't care how it's pronounced just as long as I have a general idea.

I think I'm going with the HWAH-way (with the soft H) too...like most of you.

It's so much easier to go with the flow....instead of trying to swim upstream. LOL
