Yeah...that will be interesting to see. I just hope the hardware can support the upgrade and optimization to everyone's hopes and aspirations.
LOL
Here's how I feel about the Ascend. When Huawei came out with it they produced a beautifully designed phone. The style and the dimensions are perfect. Some of the other things could have been better but I'm really just talking about the phone style and appearance here now.
I wish they would come out with the same basic phone only call it the Ascend II or something. LOL And it would look basically the same (only nicer).
Is this asking for too much? I don't think so!!!!! Of course it should have Froyo with the capability of upgrading to Honeycomb!
hahaha
NO! I am not delusional. It could happen!
"Just what made that little old ant...think he could move a rubber tree plant"
If they made the Ascend II with a dedicated GPU, I'd buy it. I love the fact that the current phone has such a large screen, it just lacks the horsepower that would put it in the middle tier.

Me too. I love the phone enough that if they basically duplicated the design with a few tweaks here and there, I'd pay over $200 for it. I think I would top out at $250 if it had 4G capability and an upgrade to 2.3.
Cricket Wireless Hi Matt- We have no updates to report on at this time. We currently have a 2.2 update for Zio coming soon. Updates to devices such as Ascend from Huawei are at the discretion of the device manufacturer if an update will be made available and not the carrier. We'll keep you posted on any further developments.3 hours ago
Joser, your post is simply not accurate! To set the record straight, Cricket DOES have a facebook page and this is what they have posted in answer to a question about the Ascend 2.2 upgrade:
Cricket Wireless Hi Greg - We currently have a 2.2 update for Zio coming soon. Updates to devices such as Ascend from Huawei are at the discretion of the device manufacturer where one will be available and not the carrier. We'll keep you posted on any further developments.

This was posted 4 hours ago from the time and date of this post. So Ascend users...don't ditch your phones just yet.
Well they need to see the thread to see the whole story. There will be an update, but it is not going to be delivered by Cricket, but it will still be releasede by Huawei.
I believe what joser said he saw yesterday was accurate. My spidey-sense is telling me that someone got reamed for revealing some information he wasn't supposed to, and now they are backtracking to cover their asses. Think about it. They dont want people to stop buying the ascend because they are waiting on the new phone to come out. However, if metro is getting the update, we will too, one way or another.

Updated Original Post on Thread Feb 12, 2011
[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)This is the official Huawei Ascend 2.2 upgrade Android Forum thread.
The first post here will be updated continuously as new and 'confirmed' information is released regarding the 2.2 firmware upgrade that Ascend users are anticipating, both with Cricket and MetroPCS.
All posts on this thread following this one will be considered: discussion and speculation.
Update: Feb 12, 2011 -
The latest information we have received officially is from the Cricket Facebook Fanpage on Feb 11, 2011. An official Cricket Rep there has posted that 'at this time' Cricket has received no word as to when the upgrade will be released and that it will not come from the carrier, but will be released through the manufacturer, Huawei. Cricket has advised that they will keep the users posted. While we have not seen anything official from MetroPCS, we can only assume at this time that upgrades for Metro Ascend users will recieve the upgrade in the same manner. Just as soon as we have official information from MetroPCS we will be posting it here in this first post.
Regarding News,Tips and Rumors:
If you have information regarding the 2.2 upgrade you want to share, please post it here on this thread instead of creating a new thread. All new threads pertaining to the 2.2 Froyo upgrade for the Ascend, whether it is for Cricket or MetroPCS will either be merged into this one of locked. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
All rumors or news will be checked out first and updates will be posted here on this first post as they are deemed to be of importance to the Ascend Forum. Your discussion and speculation is highly welcome, however!
To begin the discussion anew:
So the good news is that at least we have not heard that 2.2 is NOT going to be forthcoming. Remember that the Ascend was only officially released in Nov 2010 for Cricket and December 2010 for MetroPCS. So it isn't like it has been out there forever without any upgrade.
An example of upgrades: The Kyocera Zio (Cricket Smartphone) was launched by Cricket in Sept 2010. It has just now been officially announced by Cricket that it will be updating to 2.2. So it is natural to assume it might take as long as six months for the Ascend to receive an upgrade as well. Fortunately for the users, the Ascend was released with 2.1 instead of the 1.6 that the Zio had.
Note: With regards to the recently posted information on upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2, please do not attempt this procedure. While the poster who posted the information and instructions here has the very best of intentions, it is the Chinese version of the upgrade and we have not yet received the American version. If you live in China please disregard this message.
It is unwise to attempt to upgrade following these instructions at this time. Please wait until we have received the official release.
We have reports from those who have tried that they are now unable to use their phones.
It is good news, however, that we received this news as that means we are getting just this much closer to having our 2.2 upgrade.
To again answer your questions before you ask:
1. No one knows when we will get the official upgrade at this time.
2. No one knows for sure how we will be notified but it has been stated, at least by Cricket, that the upgrade will come from Huawei Manufacturer.
3. We will post here (in this first post) the minute we receive or have confirmed the official release.
4. All users: We will have directions to help and assist you with any manual upgrades.
3. Rooted users: When you see the official upgrade, wait for further instructions here on how to proceed.
Stay tuned.

The x5 looks very similar, but much nicer to me. Ive always hated the shiny plastic battery cover on the ascend. Am I the only one who will miss having the trackball? It comes in handy for "dialing in" what you want to click on on crowded pages.

This is all the information they sent me when I asked them about an upgrade. I'd asked if it was true or rumor that there was a Froyo 2.2 update coming. ==>"Dear Sir /Madam
Thank you for you appreciation to our Smart phone, ,as for the Android device you could visit our technical forum for the lattest info

That was it. X.x I'm scared to try any of the mod roms because I am concerned it will affect the update (If we get one). Keeping my fingers crossed. Perhaps I should bother asking a Metro Pcs representative too?

For those of you waiting for the 2.2, I think you are smart to keep your phones as stock as possible in the meantime.
You can always do the custom ROMs.
There are a lot of rumors now surfacing about if and when the Ascend will get an update but still nothing concrete.
Mobile World Congress is going on now in Barcelona and Huawei just unveiled a new smartphone called the X3 that is going to have 2.3 as stock. It's still under $200 bucks and sounds pretty cool.
Here's a link to some other stuff that Huawei is doing. Interesting reading if you have the chance:

EVERY MetroPCS rep I have talked to has NO CLUE about anything to do with anything outside of selling the phone and taking my payments...

I heard Huawei Ideos will be out in the US before summer time
i dont like the design as much as Ascend
and its missing the Camera Key
Youtube it if u guys wanna see how the phone look
but that's an Andriod 2.2
I wonder if they are gonna push that one out insist
of doing a update ??????
more money for them , suck for all of us that just bought the Ascend
Anything you buy will suck when the next new thing comes out. The thing to remember for us is that, since just about all of us are first-time smartphone users, we didn't know what to look for. Now we all know that our next phone should have a dedicated GPU, more internal memory, froyo/gingerbread, etc. We'll be smarter shoppers in the next round. The big trick right now is getting the most out of the choice we made, rather than being upset about what we didn't get.

That is from a totally UNKNOWN source! Why would you attempt to do something that someone who won't even identify themself suggests? When the official 2.2 update comes out it will be posted here immediately along with instructions.
My suggestion is to play it on the safe side and not be so hasty.

Yep! Sad but true. Smart Phone manufacturers are so busy coming out with new and hotter phones that the minute you get one (no matter how great it is) it becomes almost obsolete. hahaha
I was just looking at some of the new releases at MWC (Mobile World Congress) going on in Barcelona right now. There are some very cool handsets getting ready to hit the U.S. carriers mid 2011. That seriously isn't all that far off. Now we can be patient that long can't we? LOL
No? Why am I not surprised! hahaha
I know Cricket is getting a new LG Optimus for sure (don't know which one) and it should be here in Q1 or Q2. I'm hoping they are still going to get the IDEOS X5 as well.
So Blast...I totally agree with you. We should all just enjoy our phones and not be in such a rush.

it's not a totally unknown source. as the guy who posted the blog has his name on it...it's an unknown source to you. but apples to oranges. end of the day. the people who had this firmware....were not planning on releasing it, in it's current state. the person who leaked it felt the entire community should have access to it. i mean shit it's gpl. lol. and the more i find out about who really is responsible for this rom... the happier i am to see it released. i mean the dude thats calling it "his rom" didnt do anything more than add a file someone else gave him. this isnt a rom made by darklg lmao it's a rom hacked together by darklg.
i've tried it, and can say it runs pretty smooth. mms doesnt work. wifi works fine. mms recieves an authentication error from the service provider. something is probably left hard coded from the original chinese device. btw im on cricket. btw props to LG for the build.prop without that i doubt this would have happened!

Where do you see any name on the Blog? I have looked and looked. There is no form of ID whatsoever.
At any rate...it is not an official release!
That's what this thread is for. Official and confirmed info regarding the release of 2.2 (Froyo) for the Ascend.
Btw...are you with Huawei? Just curious as to why you call yourself Huawei Leak?
my bad the name isnt on the blog. ill message the guy see if he will add it. does that really matter? if his name is bob...how many bobs are out there. this was just a guy doing the ascend community a favor and taking what should be publicly available and making it publicly available.
wait official? who can officially release it lmao.... huawei won't. cricket won't. metropcs won't...so were will never be an official release....
as far as i can tell this is just a c8500 rom repackaged for the ascend.
so it is the official c8500 2.2 rom with ascend packaging
i guess my name should have been ascend leak...lol
ps: the issue with mms is a small one. probably something that's been overlooked. hence why it was leaked to the masses. maybe someone else will see something specific to their carrier (cricket, metropcs) and know the fix. the current issue is when you receive an mms you try and download the mms and the service provider says authentication error. adb logcat

Read the blog and it sounds like what they are working on over at myascend web site in the development part of the forum, so i would guess its one of them that leaked it since none of them on the site would release it for others to work with, just my thoughts on the matter.
and fill it with random content bacck to april 2010? lol. think about that one dude. the reason it was released on the blog was because i (not myascend) have control over it. theres nothing they (myascend) can do to make me remove it. hint: the blog is mine lmao.
and to ventovic... uh it wasnt released by anyone at myascend. they didnt want this released. thats why when i got my hands on it....it was released. lol. if it isnt making sense yet...i wrote the blog entry. as well as being the guy who leaked the rom.

Glad you leaked it out, now maybe some one can figure the mms part out...you should start a tread with this info since it doesn't have anything to do with the official discussion in this tread.....and i understand your point on whats official in your earlier post it will just keep things easier for others to find and work on if they so choose to

G...I am so glad. LOL When I get to thinking about changing carriers just to get another phone all I have to do to cure myself is visit their websites and look at their plans. I get more appreciative of Cricket and other ppd carriers real fast. And yeah...I know more and more people who are getting away from the contracts. Most of my friends are amazed when I tell them what I pay for unlimited everything. LOL

Pardon? I just picked up the ascend and was doing some reading up to as why angry birds won't play properly on this thing and a lot of sites say that angry birds won't work with the 2.1 system but will with a 2.2 system, is this false info? I just stumbled on this site and saw you people are all about these droids and figured it'd be a great place to get more info on this neato phone I have here. So will this new system update allow me to play angry birds? =)
