if you don't pay your bill, yes you can use wifi for everything internet related.
unlike a certain device from a company that rhymes with crapple.

Nice. I was wondering why so many members have two to three cell phones. They can multi-task.

i have my mpcs account on my old razr v3 for the moment because i don't want to brick my ascend and not be able to call for a day.
when i'm done messing with it (most likely tomorrow) i'll switch the number back to my ascend.

You can't even change YOUR own battery with a Apple anymore. They are so scared of people jerry rigging their products they are locking them down. X.x Is Steve Jobs even still in his "Job". Haha Pun..Sorry no, I'm just curious. Wasn't he stepping down due to illness? Who took his place and do they have a cool last name like he does?

call customer support and tell them you want to switch your number to a phone that is currently in your hands. i haven't tried to switch back to the ascend (fc problems with my launchers) but going to old phones such as the razr is a snap and takes about five minutes with a good cs rep.

Even with my old Samsung messenger from cricket, you could use the internet without service on the phone, or wifi. I think it is a glitch in their system at cricket. I won't tell if you wont.

Ditto here.I switched from my CRICKET Motorola QA 30 to the ASCEND,keeping the same phone #.It still has 3G internet,& the phone still receives incoming Email, text,& phone call notifications.,everything except being able to make a phone call.Wonder if this may be part of the reason we sometimes receive double texts, trying to send the same text to two different phones w/the same phone#?

I was getting the double text msg's and sometimes even triple yet this is my first time with cricKet. Course I suppose the phone number I have is one that was used before.

I've not had double text msg's since moving to Icarus 1.1 but I also at the same time switched to using Handcent SMS at the same time so ... who knows which 'change' fixed it.

What is funny is I get double text messages FROM CRICKET! lol. I only get them from certain people, but you would think cricket would at least get their own act together. I still use my old cricket phone as my alarm clock because I can hit snooze without opening my eyes, and it still receives texts. The old mobile web doesn't work, though.

The word CRICKET may end up being like the word F***{see George Carlin}.
Seems every CRICKET ASCEND owner has their own 1 off version of the same phone.Nothing major that affects overall performance, but, just that one something that makes you say "that's odd".

I still like my Ascend and don't plan on upgrading to another phone anytime soon BUT while visiting a friend tonight I saw his LG ... you know that "budget" one everyone seems to talk about. I think he's with T-Mobile but I think most of the major carriers have it and it's the same more-or-less for each one (as I understand it). Of course cricKet doesn't have it (yet).

Anyway I have to admit I'm a bit jealous. It was very fast and responsive and we watched a YOU TUBE video on it that looked fine. Perhaps I'm getting off topic here but I've heard people lament it doesn't have FLASH but isn't YOU TUBE flash? Or I guess it works with YOU TUBE but not FLASH enabled web browsing?

Icarus 1.1 has resolved the lag (lack of responsiveness) somewhat but it is still there and it was nice playing with a phone that didn't have that *sigh*

Sorry I guess this is way off topic but KOLIO's comment above made me think of how quirky this phone (the Ascend) really is which made me think of my friend's LG and how nice it was (or appeared to be) in comparison.

The Ascend does'nt suck as bad as some of the comments may make you believe, mine is very responsive, and does it's job well. Granted, it may lag on certain things, but generally, it does the job. It's the crapware that comes installed on it that slows it, so rooting is required. My coworker has a samsung imtercept, that constantly loses it's data connect, and I was shocked, when I looked in his settings, knowing that we both have android 2.1/update, there was a lot missing on his, that mine has, his is still stock, and on virgin mobile. I'd rather do reliable, than slightly fast any day, just like a good car.

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but does Google Voice work through your Wi-Fi? Like, does it need an actual phone service connection to function? If it will work through Wi-Fi only, when you have phone service turned off, but the Wi-Fi still works, would Google Voice still allow you to make phone calls? Kinda like having a phone without the bill.

I never used Google Voice but I know you can pay $2.99 a month to Skype and that will allow you to use Skype to call ANY phone number, be it a land line or a cell phone etc. (in other words you aren't limited to other Skype callers). So if your phone's Wi-Fi still works and you do that with Skype then yes you essentially can make phone calls ... assuming you have access to Wi-Fi of a decent enough speed. Please note you can only make phone calls this way. People can't call you unless they do so from Skype.

Yep, I read that somewhere else. In fact, I think I read it from another of your posts. Definately good info to know.

Right. You're only paying to use the cell towers, use the number they gave you, use their voicemail, etc. When on WiFi, you can do all the stuff you've always been able to do on WiFi. And if you use an app like GrooVe IP with a Google Voice number, you can even make calls over WiFi without paid service.

Default I need to access internet from my canceled metro pcs hew.m860 phone

I DO not get Metro pcs service at my house so after a year of frustration, I discontinued my service, however I have my Ascend phone that cost some $ and I need to at least use my wifi...I can't get it to scan for service in my home where I have paid service. Called Metro they said to go into the store, but I am no longer a customer. How the heck can I get my WiFi service to work on this phone?
