------This is for informational use only, I am not responsible for you messing up your own phone, or loosing your contacts. Use this solution at own risk.----------
I have spent the last hour trying to figure out why the individual ringtones for each of my contacts stopped working this last week.
_do i have cm6/7 or other mod = no
_do i have random ringtone editor = no
_have I rooted and messed with internal settings = yes (but not the problem)
_have i fixed stuff I messed up = yes
So why are my custom (individual and caller id based contacts) ringtones going to the default ringtone I set to the phone?
Answer: DUPLICATE CONTACTS at same time causes programing conflicts.
If you have ever restored contacts lists from gmail and/or mem card or pc at the same time of one another it can create multiple lists. (and sometimes creates "joined" contacts, usually signified by the lowercase 'g')
The problem that I think happens is the phone tries to use properties from both lists, conflicts results and says screw it I'll just use default.
+++Solution+++:
First off, do a clean backup of your contacts to mem card or pc [better yet, just pencil and paper all details ].
2nd, delete all contacts with a 'g' next to them(might be all).
3rd, turn off google sync to contacts.
>4th is Very Important<
4th, go to the favorites next to contacts and again delete all with 'g' mark.
5th, "manage contacts" and restore from mem card.
6th, clean up the 'g' ones again if any/all (you may need to manually input some/all if no contacts remain [see pencil and paper]).
That should correct the ringtone to default/error issue. If it occurs again, repeat step 4, somehow some 'g' contacts are hidden.
Anyways Peace, Yo! From:JJdaCool
+1
I don't use individual ringtones, but this is a good post. Hope it helps those that do.

I'm gonna have to get back to you on that one, probably gonna upgrade the SD card then.
I don't mind re-flashing ROMs, or using different ones, but I like the one I has now, should ask the guy himself me thinks...did NOT know about the little 'limit' there.
Thanks though, gonna try this too after I clear caches like Nutts mentioned.
in settings did you choose swype for the default keyboard under languages and keyboard?
Yes, but everytime I reboot, it isn't selected anymore. I have to use the Swype Installer to select it again after each reboot. I don't know if it's just because I'm using the latest version, which at some point was the beta (not even sure if it's still beta or not) -- I could check all this on the Swype site, just thought another Ascend-ie might know.
thx,
EDIT: OK, that was a good suggestion I had (lol) -- the swype folks say this can be caused by having Swype installed on the SD card, because since the card mounts relatively late in the boot process, that causes a problem with loading Skype as part of the system. Makes sense to me. I moved my installation to the phone, and am rebooting. Here is the Swype forum thread.

thx,
what build are you on, if you on cm7 than that might be the case, cause i never could get swype to work with cm7.
lolz, also i would suggest BK8, swiftkey x, or A I Type keyboard, BK8 is good for people with big fingers also.
I'm stuck on using Swype only because I don't know of any others with the tracing feature, and I really like that. So, this being the place to post stupid question... what are some others that have that?

T-9 Keyboard has a swipe-style option,I believe,along w/gesture,voice,& standard input options.
Might wanna check out KEYPURR.When this board first hit the market in Jan 2011,it had a 30 day free trial.
I'd shoot the developer an email & request a similar trial version before purchasing.

Hmm...let me guess, getting the CM6 or 7 or something will require me to play with mods right? I'm using PlayfulMod, that means I'm going to have to replace it right?

You may be able to download a morph lock screen. Ive seen a couple. I dont know if it would make a difference tho. I used the pattern lock screen for one day. I found out Captain Morgan and the pattern lock screen dont mix. Ahaha Now I dont even lock my phone. Its in my pocket all the time anyways.

If you reset your phone, which is what it sounds like, seeing as there's almost no way out of that one, then all the data is gone, if it was stored to the SD card, it will be there, if not, its back to step one.
If you had Sync on, you should try to recover your old account and authenticate it via Google. Apps you purchased and Contacts will be restored, free ones you may have to find again.
As for other things, I'm not sure what else is there, besides music, vids, and pics that are on the SD card.
I've had my Ascend for half a year now and still haven't rooted it. I keep thinking I am going to mess up and brick it.
What are the pros and cons of rooting your phone? Is it hard?
pros: 100x Faster, coustimizable , have access to much more apps and to system files, make look sexy
Cons: 1/150 people brick there phones while rooting, but thats very unlikely to brick it , if u follow all the instructions. and this will valid your warranty.

Can I root it for free? I really don't want to pay for anything.

I actually think this phone is unbrickable to honest. Unless you do something stupid like flash a rom that isnt for the phone you most likely wont brick it.
Look around in some other threads. They will teach you alot and most of them have everything you will need with step by step instructions on how to do it all.

I see a thread with step by step instructions. Do these apply to the 2.2 update also?

Alright! A Stupid Questions Thread! No better place for me to get started.
I'm still piecing all this together before I actually start doing the work but I have a couple questions that may effect the outcome.
1: With a Cricket Ascend 2.1 just how high of an upgrade will work on it? Is froyo as high as it goes? Or if I can go higher, can I skip froyo and go right to gingerbread? Or higher?
2: I'm very stupid when out comes to understanding wifi. I live in a rural area and dont have wifi at home. (its why I dont use a computer. I'd rather mail a paper letter for advice than use dial-up.) When I go into town to use an open wifi sometimes it is even slower than the regular internet connection. This effects me in that I dont know how many large files I can d/l. (updates, clockwork recovery, etc)
I have: Rom Manager (CW recovery not d/l yet because of the wifi issue)
Tibu
Astro
CPU Master
Super User
Terminal Emulator
and rooted via Z4root.
Trying to decide what roms to get first. Any thoughts?
So basically I have the tools ready and the patient laying on the operating table... I just need to figure out where to make the first incision.

You can flash whichever ROM for the Ascend you wish, there's no need to "step up" to get to 2.3.
And WiFi is just hooking up to a modem wirelessly instead of plugging into the modem with a cable. The modem is the gate to the internet. The speed you see is going to depend on their router (which connects you to their modem wirelessly) and their internet speed, the major factor usually. Most routers today are pretty darned fast.

Thank you Scur.
I was browsing, trying to find answers and I have found multiple posts on flashing the rom's so I have a bare bones grasp but still am taking my time, reading and making notes.
Next stupid question:
Bearing in mind I dont use a computer if I d/l straight to the phone (i.e. 3.0.2.8 recovery.img) can (and how do) I move the file to the SD card root?
I think going through a computer w data cable is the common method, but I have seen a couple youtube tutorials where they mentioned doing some of the flashing with just the phone.

Thanks Shiny,
It was one of your replies I was learning from as a matter of fact.
I d/l 3.0.2.8 recovery.img from mediafire to the phone.
and am trying to move it to the SD card root.
(just want it to sit there for now until I feel ready to proceed)
Thank you Scur.

File managers can move files around. Root Explorer (a paid app) is what I've always used, but I'm sure if we just wait a bit someone will suggest a free one or two...
So i fell asleep listenin to pandora wake up my phones touch screen starts to fail. I thought oh my it probably frozed turned it off then back on but same thing happens. It wont let me input my password to unlock my phone. Has anybody else had this problem? Could anybody think of any solutions?

Dumb question answered. Astro has the move option under Edit. Seems an odd place, but whatever.
I think I'm ready to go for this but a couple last questions.
And I've saved the dumbest for last.
1: will the update have multi touch?
And 2: How is Huawei pronounced? Every tutorial they say it different. Ive heard

Hawaii
Huey
Whoo we

1. Multi-touch is a hardware issue, not software. Ascends don't have the hardware to support it.

The Huawei Ascend is MetroPCS and Cricket's extremely affordable Android handset, coming in at $150 off-contract. For that kind of money, don't expect much in terms of bang for buck. You'll get a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel c... Read More
