Metro is not going 3G with all their towers. They have publicly said they are only putting 3G in the busiest 20% of their cell sites in each market. It's to help with network management. LTE is their future. They ARE putting LTE on 100% of their cell sites.
So, you will NEVER see 3G everywhere in Metro's markets.
Late last year saw MetroPCS launch its shiny new LTE network in addition to its existing 1xRTT coverage, leaving it with 2G and 4G networks but no 3G to speak of. That'll be changing soon, though, as MetroPCS CFO Braxton Carter has announced that his carrier plans to add 3G EVDO support to a little less than 20 percent of its towers. Exactly which markets will get access to MetroPCS EVDO isn't known

Flat-rater carrier MetroPCS is deploying EV-DO data service in a little less than 20 percent of its cell sites to augment its CDMA 1X data service that exists in all of its markets, CFO Braxton Carter said.

No one ever said they were covering 100% of their market. Also he lives Port Richey which is really close to Tampa which lot of the Tampa area has "3G"

That's exactly what the guy seemed to be saying.
The op complained he got 3G some of the time, and 1x some of the time. The 2nd guy said specifically: "they might still be updating the towers near you." -- which to me means "some cell sites around have 3G but soon they all will."
NO, the more real possibility is those towers will NEVER be updated, as Metro is only doing 20% of their cell sites. And I provided proof, not speculation.

Yeahh over here im in queens ny and i just went crazy when i saw the 3G !!
my prl is 3026 too
but the thing is idk if my speed went up or not.. i never really use 1x
but i did a speed test now and got .8mbps
I currently have a Huawei Ascend with Cm7 Ascend-05212011 Android version 2.3.4
and Have been noticing 3g popping up here and there the last few days. I'm in Cocoa, Fl Since the Cm7 will not update the prl automatically I installed prl 3026 manually myself this morning. I was trying to figure out how to be able to choose Mobile Network type on this phone and stumbled on how by accident. I read entering this code on your dialer screen *#*#2846579#*#* will pull up hidden menus, so I tried that and nothing happened on my phone. I read further down for LG phone to enter *#*#4636#*#* on your dialer screen so I tried that and presto a screen popped up with 4 category's, Phone information, Battery information, Usage Statistics, and Wi-Fi information. Phone information is what you want to click on and you will have a ping test and scroll down and you will be given 9 options on preferred network type: also able to update or refresh your SMSC, turn radio on or off and toggle Dns check. Hope this help others searching for answers.

*#*#4636#*#* is the only hidden menu you can pull up on CM7. And it will update the prl. Im not far from you in Palm Bay and have had it update on its own more then once but always ended up calling *228 to revert back to 3019 because I would end up having data issues on all the prls.
i was at work today and i notice the 3g icon it bounced couple of times to 1x on my indulge but it's been steady for a couple of hours now.
I just did an speed test i got the results but i dont know how if its good or bad
on 4g the phone is Ping: 139 ms, Download 1617 kbps, Upload 2037 kbps
and on 3g Ping 379 ms, download 125 kbps, upload 175 kbps
y ran a second test on 3g Ping 314 ms, download 212 kbps, upload 45 kbps
i dont know how to go back to 1x so i cant run a test in 1x.
I am so confused Because i just got the Upgrade to 2.2 And It stills says 1x... I Live In Nyc (The Bronx) And i just wanna know if i will be getting this 3G too?
here at home there are 3 metro phones, my ascend 2.2 is the only one on the 3g, the other 2 phones a LG and a Samsung with the 2.3 are still on the 1X.

The Android version (2.2) has nothing to do with the service. Call *228 and upgrade your preferred roaming list and it will put you on 3026 prl and if you have 3g tower near you, receive 3g
The Following User Says Thank You to ShinySide For This Useful Post:
*228 has never worked on the ones i have tried i also read in here that it usually rolls back to 2019, I wouldnt dare to try it on my phone to find out
perhaps on a low 1x signal area the phone could update to 2026 by itself but i am just guessing

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and 1st just want to say thank for the great info on this forum. I live in Holiday, FL & have the Samsung Indulge. Im in a 4G area & really never had a problem with the 4G. Lately though its been back & forth between 1x, 3G, & 4G. Today its been on 3G all day. Its good that Metro is getting a 3G network, but its a pain when you have a 4G phone & no 4G. Hopefully its because they are working on the network. Anyways looks like the Tampa Bay area's 3G is up. Holiday is just north of Tarpo Springs so the rest of the area would have 3G I would think. Holiday is small compared to Tampa or Clearwater. Once again thanks for the great forum....Jeremy

Yeah, the Ascend forum here is utterly awesome, it'll always be home to me.
Hi I'm new to this site n it seems to have helpful info. I have a Samsung admire n it shows 3g in the status bar but it still seems slow. I did a speed test n the numbers don't seem like 3g numbers. Can anybody help me out? Is metro 3g Service fast?

metro 3g is just to stabilized the network is not to increase speeds although a lot of people have reported an increase in speeds i used to have an lg Optimus which pick up 3g and what I noticed was that it helped when I was streaming music but I tell you 4g lte is the way to go

Ok thanks I'm a look into the 4g I'm in Miami, FL so they should hopefully have it in my area
Just to help with the math, at home my phone is switching back and forward from 1G to 3G (evo and metro network) keeping the phone on the same table
The same thing is happening to me outside of Atlanta, there are places around here in the suburbs that have 3G and then not then 3g, and it can be a few hundred feet inbetween. That can be more annoying. I don't have money to upgrade the phone to LTE, but once they bring down the prices on those phones, I will upgrade and then have fun rooting those phones!!
The Huawei Ascend is MetroPCS and Cricket's extremely affordable Android handset, coming in at $150 off-contract. For that kind of money, don't expect much in terms of bang for buck. You'll get a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel c... Read More
