Working on this section
I have recently gained access to this phone and am feverishly working to add a FAQ and info on tweaking the phone. So far I'm rooted and cleaned so that will go up first.
Lets see how this puppy does.

Awesome! I've lurked these forums for a while and have seen you do a lot of good work with the Ascend! I just got an M835 myself (local store was out of the Ascend) and am looking forward to tweaking it.
I know you're FAQ will be comprehensive and I'm not trying to rush, but I do have a question for you, though. You said you rooted and cleaned? By cleaned, you meant removing the MetroPCS bloatware? If so, what is safe to remove?
Mine is already rooted with SuperOneClick and all seems OK, so far.

New to this.... I just picked up an M835. I was wondering if this phone had the capabilities of personalized ringers and assigned ringers to callers. Love that feature, but can't seem to find it on this phone>

Ok, I know its been a while so im going to just post s few general FAQs.
1. Rooting can be done with gingerbreak 2.1 but you CANNOT UNROOT.
2. Metro PC's apps can all be removed with a root file explorer (I used a paid app called root explorer) simply go into the "cust" folder and delete any unwanted apps from the app folder. Reboot afterwords.
3. bootstrapsound.oog (booting sound) is in system>media>audio (you can find custom boot sounds through Google)
4. Bootanimation.zip (startup animation) is in cust>metropcs same deal as bootsound.
5. The audio thing only runs when you use headphones and is optimized for earbuds.
6. Yes, once rooted you can tether using wifi or USB.
7. If your screen is twitching out just tap the power button and unlock the phone. Dunno why it happens but happens more in humid weather.
8.Yes, there are two speakers on the exterior of the phone for stereo speaker play.
9. The light is a battery indicator. Green, yellow, red, dead.
10. There is no cwm or other recovery as far as I know but I am working on it as well as I can. If you have Linux and are willing to help please pm me.
That's it for now.

ok I was able to root using gingerbread 2.2. I have super user. how in the world can I get rid of easy metro wifi? I have advanced task killer... and as of yet there are no roms to flash this to gb? I know I started on the budget android phone. I read the above but I must be using wrong process viewer as it won't let me delete the cust/apps - you can change boot animation and sound from the metro pcs one?

Metro wifi is in the cust folder. You need to mount as read/write (r/w) or similar. Remebmer that I used a paid app (will link later).
Yes, you can change the boot sound and screen by replacing the. Oog and zip. I have a few I will post after adjusting them to for your phone.
Actually, for Recovery, I used Ultrajack and it's fine, I just had to use the U8150 version for it to run now, now all I'm trying to do is to remove the boot logo (before bootanimation) and replace with the one I want

Have you done a backup and restore test?
You are looking to change the splash screen... im working on that too but its more complicated than the animation, different kind of file.

Yes I have done both and both worked successfully
NOTE about Ultrajack and Backing up, you may have to mount the sd card first before backing up the sd-ext and .android_secure sections, but everything else works like a charm
EDIT: yeah, I changed the bootanimation and boot sound too

Hey, I am new to this android type of phones, and my friend showed me all these things he can do with his HTC Evo by rooting. Rooting is as far as I got, I am wondering is there any Custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod7, 6,or any other kinds work on the Huawei M835? Thanks.

There are a few for the U8150 (Which I heard from XDA that the M835 and U8150 are basically the same phone) There is a CM7 for the U8150 out there by the Ideos Dev Team (google for that) and there's Fusionideos on which I'm about to try later myself, keep in mind with Fusionideos, you have to install the browser, market and e-mail client yourself, also, I'd STRONGLY recommend that you install a recovery solution (I use Ultrajack) and make a nand backup before performing any CM or FI install so that way of you mess something up, you can always go into recovery and restore with said backup

I chuckle when I see these... sorry
Did you backup your phone first?
If so restore the backup and wait for someone with the m835 as a toy/Modding phone to test stuff first.
Didn't backup? Maybe someone else did and you may be able to use theirs... assuming they don't mind giving you their Google account for a few minutes or thought ahead and backed up their phone after a factory reset.
Otherwise you need to find a stick recovery or working rom

I tried the ideos cwm. It doesn't work. But if you can convince me I may try your suggestion and make a stock rooted recovery for mat

Yes I did a backup, what now do I do? How do I enter recovery mode from the boot? It goes Hauwei > Ideos > Android logo ( metro pcs sound) then resets to Android logo.

while powering on, hold the power button + volume up + green button until you see the Ultrajack menu
Also, I wouldn't recommend CM7 until they iron out all the kinks on it first, I had issues with an endless com.android.phone error
Ugh i formatted my phone and SD Card now im stuck on just hauwei logo no restarts or nothing just stands there... is there anything i can do or shall i take it to metropcs?

I would try it but I don't own the phone, its a good friends. Can you do mat a favor and make him a freshboot recovery? Uploading to media fire should work.

Haha, the M835 isn't mine as well, its a friend's phone.
How do you make a Freshboot recovery? I haven't tried to 'tamper' with it or play with ROMS...just yet. Rather not till a stable one is made. (Without kinks and bugs, things that can make people who aren't as they say 'tech savy' go nuts).
Only thing the phone has been is rooted with Gingerbreak, latest I think, can't remember the version but I googled it and checked the number. Removed nearly all MetroPCS stock apps.

In phone settings do a factory reset. Turn off the phone and backup in ultra without rebooting

Boot Logo and Splash Screen
ok I was able to replace the metro pcs boot sound! the boot animation however is giving me problems. I can not seem to over write or move or delete the bootimage.zip even when mounted in r/w -- also , what is the best way aside from titan to to a nand backup? I have the liberty toolbox that will reboot to recovery, but I didn't see the recovery in the options menu -- as for ROMS, it isn't looking too good for my android starter ki.. is it ?

For the boot animation, try copying a "bootanimation.zip" file from a SD Card to /data/cust/media with a Root File Explorer (I use ES File Explorer), backup the original first though just to be safe

All I can do with es is see the cust folder contents, I didn't try the boot animation I restored my titanium backup of root explorer on to my friends phone (removed it after use, as it is a paid app) and Did all boot mods and app removal with that.

A cwm is on the way (thanks to playfulgod) if you would like to help test it and future roms pm me so I can point you in the right direction.

I know, the cust folder's locked, even with ES, I had to use a tutorial to edit it so that the phone thinks that bootanimatiion.zip is in /system/media, this is said tutorial here NOTE: The oemlogo.mbn part of the tutorial dies NOT work on the M835, you need to follow my splash screen tut to install a new splash screen

P.S Great Work Guys
I can't find any way to unlock the screen without sliding the screen.
For now getting your screen fixed is your only option
i rename the boot animation.zip file to oldbootanimation.zip and didnt replace it with anything and rebooted and the metro pcs boot screen was replaced with an android boot screen. That was pretty cool. Then i tried to paste a custom bootanimation into the folder and named it bootanimation.zip and rebooted and i only had a black boot screen. Any idea what i should do? Where is the droid loading this android animation from if it isnt in the folder that contained the metro boot animation?

Are you copying the bootanimation.zip into the /cust/metropcs/us/media folder? if so, then try this tutorial to make the phone look for the bootanimation.zip into /system/media instead
yes i was copying it into the cust/metropcs/us/media folder i am new to the whole smart phone thing (lets just say i have been living under a rock) and dont have any experience editing hex so i will probably just leave it with the droid boot animation that it has now (it is much better than the metro one). Thanks for your response though i have learned alot in the last two days. I rooted my phone installed setcpu, root explorer and the jack recovery program and changed the huawei splash screen as well as the boot sound.
I was looking into trying to edit the directory of the bootanimation.zip in the tutorial posted above and am interested in trying to do it but i dont have the slightest idea on how to use Hex editor or even where to download it. Is there a tutorial for hex editor? or an easier was to change the directory? Am I asking too much? I learn quickly and can follow directions very well

K, just a little heads up for future customization, the /cust folder is locked, even with a Root Explorer, Extract the /system/bin/bootanimation from the phone's files system amd put it into your SD Card and a good hex editor that I use is a program called XVI32, for when you downloaded, extracted it and open it, go to Edit > Replace and replace the entry in the tutorial (/data/cust/bootanimation.zip) with /system/media/bootanimation.zip, then for when you're done, put the edited bootanimation back into /system/bin, replacing the old one, it should work
An interesting turn of events. As it turns out the bootanimation.zip file i was using was the problem not the directory. You can just directly replace the animation file in the metropcs cust folder and it will work. The only problem with this is that there is limited space available in that folder so for more complex animations you will have to change the directories.

Glad you got it to work, I did the path change to get custom bootanimation.zip files
I currently have an Ascend beautifully hooked up, thanks to Toke, with Icarus 1.1 and I love my phone. The crappy Cricket service, however is pissing me off to the point that I'm looking to go to MetroPCS for M835. My question is how do the two compare or do they. Is the 835 an upgrade to the Ascend and am I making a wise move. I WILL root and clean it but am I losing or gaining compared to the Ascend? Thanks in advance.

The phones are essentially the same.
But IMO the ascend is better just due to size and graphics.
So how does the phone operate without 3g? Internet, apps, whatever? AND is it possible to increase my 3g connectivity or signal on my Ascend. If I can do that my problem is solved.

Hmm, ok I have been lurking here for a bit now trying to understand some of what is being said, but as for the service of MetroPcs I can speak. I live in the DFW area of Texas and I get 3g here, as for phone service my Bro-in-law has Sprint when we go out of town foe family reunions or for funerals he keeps losing service, my wife and I on the other hand do not, out of town here in Texas can really be out in the sticks.
Just my thoughts on the service of MetroPcs.
Now as to the Phone I love it and am totaly facinated with it, but I know nothing about these marvels of technology. I am trying to understand, but am lost as to some terms such as Rooting?

Unfortunately I know of no way to increase signal.
Without 3g metropcs uses what's called 1x which tops around 50kbps which is about equal to dialup speeds.

You may well have 3g in Dallas fort worth area.
Some metro users have been reporting receiving 3g signals I. Metropcs 4g areas. However slot of places don't have coverage (like homestead Florida, just south of Miami so metro doesn't officially support 3g at the moment.
Rooting could be considered equivalent to "jailbreaking" an idevice. It allows the user full control of their phone by allowing "superuser" access to the phones main directory (aka the "root" directory) that controls everything else.
Rooting allows you to modify/delete files, such as boot animation and sound as well as CPU controls and built/locked apps.
Rooting also allows for theming and tethering as well as some other fun stuffs.
