Default Dev Support

So heres the thing. I have been spending a lot of time on XDA trying to reach out to different rock star devs and ask for support. I have been even been asking for guidance on where to start myself. Frankly I just have been lazy. I am actually a software architect professionally and have been doing software development for 12 years and counting. However I am solely Microsoft based. I am an extreme novice when it comes to linux. But it shouldnt be that difficult to transfer my skills. However all of my attempts to reach out fo assitance hae fallen short. No one seems to want to help point me in the right direction to get started tearing apart roms, compiling kernals, smali edit, you name it. So if any of you out there know of any good tutorials that could help get me started I would like to attempt a port of the ICS update at a min I would like to get a custom kernal built (assuming source has been posted somewhere) and at least a custom rom for the community as well.

UPDATE:
So I have been doing some more research and I thought I would share my findings. My all around goal was to take the existing attempt of the ICS port this floating around out there and complete it effectively giving us all the ICS update we want. Unfortuntely I have been getting any feedback from devs out there so these are some of the resources I have come up with thus far. I am hoping this will help other users out there that are interested in building/porting ROMs get the ball rolling.

Android System breakdown and overview of building source/rom from scratch:
http://marakana.com/s/video_tutorial_android_internals_building_a_custom _rom_pt_1_of_2,269/index.html

Cooking a custom ROM with Kitchen Utility:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/15/how-to-create-your-own-custom-rom-for-android-part-2-creating-your-first-rom/

Kitchen Utility itself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246

Note on the utility I do see extended support for Huawei devices however I do not see the Merc in the list. I am just hoping that things will just naturally work out. Anyways this is where my reserach has led me thus far I am hoping to get to the point here I can start dissecting the existing PORT out there and come up with something. But things may be a little more difficult for me as my current mercury has gone tits up.

Good luck on your journey. I myself wanted to do the same but its quite a bit of work.
Xda would seem like a good place but the devs pretty much stick to the better brand phones where they can also profit from.

There are two developers I found to be really responsive. You should try Tickerguy and Issacj87. Both of them were responsible for porting CM7 over to the Motorola Triumph. Issacj87 was also responsible for porting MIUI over to the Triumph. Along with those guys, there are multiple guys that were responsible for making kernels and fixing issues related to that phone. If you need guidance, I would ask them.

Biggest thing for any dev is to have the phone to work with. I for one from experience can tell you, yes it can be done w/o the phone in hand, but its a major pita to do so and takes about 10x as long to get anything done.

I actually reached out to Juston (the dev who attempted the ICS rom port) for support on continuing his work with the ICS port for the merc. We shall see what he says and is willing to offer my guidance. I think once I get the foundation in place I will be able to get up to speed pretty quickly and hopefully finish where he left off. But I do need that initial mentorship....

Smile Beta ICS For mercury

There is a beta release of ics from titan at prepaid unleashed website. The rom is working ok with the exception its a PORT from china gsm version of the mercury so there is no data services at this time. If anyone knows how to port gsm to cdma. go over and give him a hand.

Thanks all

Default gsm to cdma

I asked a good friend of mine from the xda Iconia a500 forum about the issues with the gsm rom port to cdma.. There are kernel module and driver changes needed.. He tells me this can be done but only if you have a CDMA Rom from the Honor to use. Or a very good developer with Kernel source from the mercury and the ability to recompile it from gsm to cdma.

This above information is bases on the issues from the sprint galaxy s2 gsm ics rom FROM CHINA. they had to wait until samsung leaked the cdma version.

If the above is true Im so very sorry all. Unless there is another model of this phone floating around out there that is cdma.
Thanks in advance for anyone that actually can do this.

I bet if PG had the phone in his hands he could do it. Has Huawei not released source for the Mercury? They usually are pretty good about releasing it.

There is no ICS ROM Available for this phone the Honor is just getting it . So no there is no source. That only comes after the manufacturer is Done pushing the OTA. the ics rom the guys are working on is a leak from the honor which is gsm phone. With that said the leaked well official beta for a gsm phone. The port can be done. but i think it will take a kernel from another phone that is cdma and ported to the ics rom for the mercury..
yes doing this is way above my ability. I just understand what needs to be done. Spend to much time on techie sights.

Hope the above makes sense but its what i understand from my reading. If im wrong please explain . Any day we learn something new is a good day.

The honor is almost the same phone so if huawei releases the kernel src the needed changes can be done. That n the rom itself could be used to port cm9.
