i couldnt find it but i recall that drakaz wrote that tether wont work witout some work on the kernel on froyo.

Is wipe required even when switching from one nightly build to another? It's annoying to retype APN details, google account, settings, etc each time...

doesn't flashing a new firmware wipe all that stuff anyway?

applying a zip from sd doesn't (as it isn't "flashing" per se, it's just copying of files). it retains all my settings, apps, sms, whatever. only the files get replaced by the new ones and as long as the new versions are compatible with the stored settings, no wipe is necessary.

it's like udpating an app from the market. the APK file is copied to the system partition and as long as it is backwards compatible with the previous version, all the settings and data is used from the previous.

this symptoms may related to the proximity sensor, whenever I received a call and the proximity sensor actives the off screen event, the phone will be locked after conversation. The only solution I found is to uncheck the proximity in the "setting-> display-> proximity sensor", hope this can help you guys.

i agree that the proximity sensor doesnt work 100% good and the locked screen still happened but les then in beta2. i have it turned off too.
but the answer there was for a newly installed nightly and not after call

on another note - i feel so stupid that i didnt try to update the nightly without a wipe..... every 2 - 3 days to install it all again...... damn!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes you can. Make sure you use recovery 5.1.1 and of course don't forget Nandroid backup .

Yes, nandroid back up AFTER you move to recovery 5.1.1.

I have yet to find a way to restore nandroid backups from pre-5.1.1 versions using 5.1.1. The new version has a 'slot' system, which I had asked for haha. Got tripped up by my own request. Oh how embarrassing.

All you have to do is go into the \sdcard\nandroid\mem=109M\ folder and add "SLOT1-", "SLOT2-" etc.. to the beginning of any of the folders inside and you will be able to restore them.

How do you pick a slot? I ended up going over my saved Galaxo build However, I did discover that it keeps ALL backups in the Nandroid folder - so I deleted the mistake and I was back Everyone probably already knows, but I thought I'd put it out in case anyone else is as numpty as me

its a strange thing. Galaxo feels snappier than the nightly build. However, in linpack I get around 0,5 mflops with galaxo, but around 2,500 Mflops with the nightly build.

if you are using setcpu try to set it to max 710 min 710 and see the results in linpack
youll get 4.9 in nightly and 2.5 in galaxo

as far as i can tell the latest nightly feels abit laggy compare to the previous one

you can try to install rthunder2, a 3D game on both nightly and 1.6.3.3, you can see the difference. For the user interface, scrolling..etc, 1.6.3.3 has better performance, but when you run an app in nightly compare with 1.6.3.3, you can find nightly is more better.

thx , seems like it will take a while for nighty to become 2x faster then eclair , and 4x faster then donut.

Tried the latest nightly yday and I must say Im impressed.
Played around for a day and then reverted back to 1.6.3.3

Though was not able to get back to 1.6.3.3 using nandroid backup....had to install 1.6.3.3 manually :|

Gosh it was tough again....The drivers issues made it sure that that I was busy doing it for about 4-5 hours. Had to use 3 different systems to get the work done..

Would now wait for the stable release...

OK, I tried it, I succeeded installing it at the first time, but then the android.process.media started crashing and kept crashing the market. so I tried the process all over again (by the way, should i apply the new nightly, reboot, and then apply the gapps? or should i apply the nightly, and immediately (without restart) apply the gapps?) and every time the phone starts i get lots of force closes. I gave up at my 5th attempt or so
returning to 1.6.3.3 (and I can't restore my latest nandroid from some reason! Im starting fresh 1633)

Did anyone else experienced the same problem?

@Alonzzo2 have you tried putting slot1 before your nandroid save on the sd card, that is if you saved before updating to recovery 5.1.1.
With the new recovery you can now choose 4 different nandroid saves (thanks to bukington)

@ryko, thanks, but i did the nandroid backup (on slot 3) from recovery 5.1.1.

its not a big deal for me, its just weird. i guess i could have rename the backup's library and try to restore it using recovery 4.6.4, but i just reinstalled everything.
its weird to see how much snappier the phone is after a fresh start

I agree on that.

By the away you can try manual delete of /DBDATA before installing the new nightly to get rid off the crashes (seemed to work for some people)

Drakaz mentioned that the new recovery deletes the dbdata partition, that's a proof that @Lelouch was right

I'll give it a try now, Thanks

EDIT1:
OK, it works! thanks guys.
I have another question - should I enable the JIT in this version? its off by default...

EDIT 2:
OK, I thought i'll update you with a bug I encountered and found a solution : settings werent saved in the market (kept displaying terms of use) and in other apps (general settings, adw...) and the solution is (by velnaykkar):
To fix "Settings not saved" issue on the latest nightly:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /dbdata
chmod 777 shared_prefs
After the above, settings of all apps are getting saved properly.

Just in case anyone else experienced the same problem

@Alonzzo2 nice to see you succeeded in installing the new nightly

and yes and the solution by velnaykkar works it's magic

EDIT: new nightly out from 15 August (previous one was 14 August), I'm glad that I throw my eyes on drakaz's download list

EDIT 2: somehow the new build is faster then the previos one, even without JIT enabled (maybe I'm gonna try with JIT enabled next)

If you want to use adb for the fix with the dbdata directory, you can do it using an app called root explorer, that's how i did it since i couldnt get adb to work.

Did you try it with JIT? did you performed some kind of a benchmark on the device with and without JIT?

Im using the latest nightly (aug 15th) and I don't experience the problem you're describing...
The latest nightly is still a bit laggy but overall its great!

Lets say that if 1.6.3 got a score of 10 regarding how much fluent it is, then i would say nightly (aug 15) is around 6-7.
And about the components - flash and camera are off, but camcorder is working (lousy quality, but nothing new - it had a lousy quality in 1.6.3 also)
lock key works if you set it to works in cyanogen settings, and there's nothing more i can think of.
im still using this version though its a bit slow

Looks like they have made some more progress on solving camera problem.

From twitter:

npinot
@drakaz Take picture (5MP only) on #GAOSP ready to be merged Commit e2cc8281f2121e2680dc0df4ee18d6cfa35129ee to nopy's gaosp_hardware_msm7k - GitHub

drakaz
Nest nightly come with camera's pictures and light sensor support.

And from GAOSP forum:

nopy

Thanks for the beer
Take picture commited on github http://github.com/nopy/gaosp_hardware_m … cfa35129ee
Only 5MP at the moment, other resolution need software resizing, like the orginal samsung driver do.

TODO :

- Add autofocus
- Add flashlight
- Look if effect can be enabled
- Fix crash at the end of video recording

Sounds promising! :-). I only hope they get the responsiveness of gaosp up to the level of galaxo. Gaosp is tends to be a bit laggy.

After a few days with the aug 15th nightly, I think that this release is very good for an alpha version, and it works pretty well, but I think i'll go back to 1.6.3.4 since this version restarts a few times a day and it sucks...
