Lelouch,

I finally succeeded in upgrading the phone to GAOSP.
I had a problem with a missing adbwinApi.dll file but I solved that.
It works perfectly. But there is still a problem wit Blue Tooth.
I only can transfer small files. The transfer of pictures stops with 10 to 15%
Have you got a solution?? Or is this still a bug in Android.
Once more. I am really greatfull for your help.

Greetings from Holland

Yep, it's still a Android issue, so can't help you there. So the only thing left for you to use is PC to transfer files.

One last problem.
Everything works perfectly (Only battery life is much shorter)
And I cannot set my email. I have 2 accounts. Gmail and Upcmail. I used the same settings as my Samsung Jet.
But the only thing I get is: Setting is not complete. No server connection!
What am I doing wrong??
Thanks in advance.
Greetings

Go to Settings>Accounts & sync settings. Can you tell us what you have there?
Touch the account you have there (google one) and enable the next three options (Contacts, Gmail and Calendar) and try again. If it doesn't work remove (all) the account(s). And try adding the account (google one) and give it a go again.

Hello

After my phone boot normaly. And I've done this to : " When I tried to do so, it wouldn’t do anything. It would wait for the device, then my Galaxy would boot normally. To solve this, open the device manager on your computer and turn the Galaxy off again. You are going to boot into fastboot mode again, but you’ll have about 15 seconds to check the device manager (open it beforehand), and see if there’s a new device that needs drivers. Mine was something like Android 1.0 (with a yellow exclamation mark, meaning that there are no drivers). You’ll do the exact same thing as you did with the ADB driver, using the exact same driver (right click the unknown device, update the driver, select from a list, next, Have disk, Browser, then find the same “android_usb.inf”. Check the beginning of the guide if you don’t remember what to do.) You'll need to do this during the 15 seconds the Android 1.0 will appear, so you have to be quick."

Know anyone what seems to be the problem?

Question.
When you plug the phone to PC, do you have ADB interface device in Device manager???
Also regarding fastboot, try this:
before you try to go in fastboot mode push enter in command prompt to flash recovery (I think you're trying to do this?) and then go into fastboot mode.

Cool

Thanks a ton for uploading this easy guide....It realy helped me update my galaxy .It feels heaven to have the new galaxy.Everything works perfectly..

Those who are facing problem with 'Android 1.0' problem, just download the ADB drivers from this link- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GGAPPHIE .Unzip it and first install ADB drivers and then in fastboot mode(during 15 sec)update the driver by giving the folder location to the unzipped folder.Remember this ADB driver is not signed, but it will solve ur problem.

Hi everyone

First of all thanks for making this guide - its given ppl like me the courage to go ahead with this process!

I've gone through almost all the steps, but whenever i try to apply the zip file it goes "installation failed"

just to confirm: after flashing the recovery screen, i first did the nandroid backup, then wipe/factory reset (theres no confirmation e.g operation complete for this step right?), then apply permissions, then i apply the zip but the failure message comes up.

i've tried renaming the gaosp zip file to "update.zip" and applying it using "update.zip from sd" but that gets another error msg, namely "installation aborted". i've tried using the galaxo.zip (just in case the gaosp file was corrupted) but the same error occurs.

If someone could give me a few pointers/hints would be much appreciated. thanks

edit: THE HOME KEY IS THE ONE THAT BRINGS YOU BACK TO YOUR HOME SCREEN (BETWEEN THE BACK BUTTON AND THE ON OFF BUTTON!, I THOUGHT THE HOME KEY WAS THE OK BUTTON DURING RECOVERY!) doh

I know it's been a while since you guys posted anything on this page but if someone can see this I really need help. I flashed and installed GAOSP and Gapps as shown above ... working perfectly but one thing. When I push the ''End Call'' button the screen closes wich is normal, it's entering in some kind of sleep mode or something ... but if I don't use the phone in the next 10 to 15 minutes I can't do anything with it ... I tried every single button possible, I tried to push/hold the power button as if it was closed .... nothing ... It refuses to do anything. The only thing that I can do is to remove the battery and put it back ... then it reboots ... Since I'm not using my phone every 10min, I'd like to know what point I've missed or what setting I need to change to avoid this. Thanks a lot to all the saviors out there who can help me because I don't want to go back to android 1.6...

Is this happening with your wifi turned off? If it's on, try changing the wifi sleep policy to never.

Not dumb at all: it's a well hidden option.

Settings, Wireless settings, Wifi settings, there press the menu key on your phone, a menu should pop-up. Select Advanced and there you are.

I have another question... Is there somekind of way to make GAOSP faster ... 'Cause I'm having a hard time running it. What I liked about galaxo is that is was fast as hell ... But now with GAOSP I'm a bit disapointed ... The only reason I switched to GAOSP is because of all the apps I couldn't run with Galaxo ... So is there a way to make GAOSP faster ( and how ) if not is there a way to run all the apps on galaxo...

Thanks

Going from 1.5 to Beta 3 should work.

Start over, but this time:

-Remove the battery
-Boot into recovery mode
-Wipe (factory reset)
-Fix package permissions
-Apply GAOSP beta 3
-Reboot normally, you should get into the os
-Reboot into recovery mode again
-Fix package permissions
-Apply the GAOSP zip
-Reboot normally

Make sure to wait for a couple minutes when it's booting.

Keep us posted!

Camera doesn't work, also flash. Bluetooth is buggy,... ...anyway you should have checked issues still remaining. Plus, this is also a Beta version (first) of GAOSP with Gingerbread and according to bukington when some issues are fixed we will have another release.

Have fun with Gingerbread.

The wiki says bluetooth is 100%. Now camera works in video mode, just not for pics.

Anyone else tried gingerbread? Not sure there is any useful feature with it except for VOIP/SIP.

I am unclear on overclocking in gingerbread but it sounded like it is still not possible. In GAOSP beta 3 I am running at 720 MHz and that is what made the galaxy useful again.

lelouch u convinced me. I am just finishing my upgrade to gingerbread. I bought the Galaxy Updater app from the marketplace to support Drakaz and to prevent me from having to reinstall the software to communicate with my galaxy (reinstalled windows a couple days ago).

I hope this will make my phone more stable, it was constantly locking up or randomly rebooting with GAOSP Beta 3 and a handful of apps I had installed. No more angry birds until the gingerbread beta allows overclocking. Angry birds was almost unplayable anyways, even at 720MHz.

Did anyone else have a problem with GAOSP beta 3 where you use voice "navigate to mcdonalds . . . " then the next time you tried to use the mic there would be an error. Even after pulling the battery it wouldnt work again, I would just have to wait until the next day and it seemed to come back.

Did you download Android SDK for Windows? There you have your missing .dll file (now did I copy them to Windows/System 32 that's a real question ). I'm guessing that .dll that are missing are AdbWinApi.dll and AdbWinUsbApi.dll (those are in platform-tools folder of Android/Android-sdk-windows
Also in order to have better success at flashing Recovery press enter in cmd before you use fastboot (you will not loose anything) cause it always works this way.
BTW, did you install all the drivers that are posted here?

I bought the Galaxy Updater to support development a little bit. I used it to update . . .

I went to the new nightly build from the Gingerbread beta 1, since it supports overclocking now. I said YES to the wipe so I would not risk getting stuck in a reboot loop.

Now I am stuck in a reboot loop. It shows the new boot screen, then it goes to the old boot screen, then it loops. Pulled the battery but it didnt fix it. I think I should start to cry not but I am still pretty new with this stuff, so I thought I should ask if it is time to start up my tear ducts.

Holding menu or home on hard reboot doesnt do anything. Holding Call button starts fastboot mode but I dont have the SDK anymore :P

Which version of GalaxyUpdater have you bought?

Okay now about problems. First boot runs for about few minutes so you should not freak out. Did you try to go to Recovery mode? Does it work?

I got the new updater that came out in the last days to enable overclock in gingerbread. I cant see which version coz the phone is a wreck, but it is the goasp 3 nightly.

I cannot goto recovery mode. All I can do is hold Call button to go into fast boot.

I did a recovery backup when I 1st upgraded to GAOSP as per this thread. When I did this most recent update, I installed the latest recovery but I did not do a new backup (I wasnt happy with gingerbread 2.3.3 st version).

I just received a class4 8GB microSD card with SD adapter so I can physically copy files around in case that will help.

Can you get in download mode?

Download mode does work

Above I said I couldnt get into recovery mode. I made a mistake about recovery mode, I re-read the guide and realized it is Volume Down+Call+Hangup. It does work and it is the new 6.6.1 version.

Looks like I am in luck!

I selected "Nandroid..." and I am restoring my orginal (and only) backup from slot1.
Rebooted and downloaded the Galaxy Updater App again. Had to reboot in recovery mode to Root the phone again. Tried to install the 0519 nightly gaosp again, and same problem. It just loops on the Galaxy AOSP boot screen.

Lelouch, I saw you posting at drakaz forum a week ago saying drakaz "did it again", I think it means the nightly worked for you. Hmm... what am I doing wrong?

Is there a way to move your personal data off and bring it back after upgrading images, or do you have to start over every time?

Okay, now download the nightly directly from here. Copy it to your SD card internal, go to Recovery (do a Nandroid Backup), apply full wipe (key stuff), fix permissions, apply any zip (Nightly), reboot to system (wait a few minutes for first boot), again restart to Recovery mode, fix permissions again, apply any zip (gapps - I presume you have them, if not get them from here - CM'ones 7 now work).

And try your luck again.

EDIT: camera still doesn't work with the latest nightly. Issue remains while taking picture(s) the phone freezes.

Works. Too bad the marketplace updater does not. I guess that was the hold up, have to install this one manually.

Thanks Lelouch.

Which settings do you reconfigure each time (eg. overclock, screen timeout)?
Any apps u always reinstall, eg.. swipe, dropbox, chrome to phone?

How do you copy files onto your phone for updates. I am struggling with dropbox breaking on big files, and SSH is a pain to setup because you must input a bunch of code with the keyboard to make a password 1st.

I have external SD card so swipe is manually activated in GAOSP conf. You have option of creating swap file on you external SD card in Recovery. And the next release will be great (you should have taken a look in GAOSP sticky).

O/C to 720 MHz, CPU governor is on demand (you can change it to performance), no compcache, no JIT, use purge of assets (very important), lock messaging app in memory, VM heap size 24 or 32 what works best for you (that all is in CyanogenMod setings/Perfomace). In GAOSP conf choose memory presets that work best for your use.
Regarding apps I always use Titanium Backup so I always restore them (hotreboot).

EDIT: maybe DaSchmarotzer has any ideas which apps would be useful

I don't even use an app for any kind of backup. That way, I lose everything I don't really need and start from scratch again. The first app I install is usually the Stopwatch/Timer app.

You me want to stay active Lelouch?

Hey guys, that samsung galaxy was killing me with bugs, lag, horrible battery life (less than 2 hrs), GPS takes 10-20 mins to lock, and intermittent wifi. Out of frustrattion, I bought an Optimus One (p500) which has a 600MHz CPU. It should have been slower than the Galaxy which I overclocked to 720Mhz but the p500 is muuuuuuuuuuch faster. My galaxy lagged and lagged and lagged and I couldnt even have a good game of angry birds (when it would run). I thought the cpu was too old but that is not the reason.

Even though this new phone is more than 20% slower (cpu), it doesnt really have any lag and angry birds runs great, it rarely drops frames. Snappy.

The only explanation I have for the awful performance of the galaxy is inadequate ram. Do you guys use a swap space on SD card to expand the virtual ram and make the phone usable? Since you have used yours for a long time, I am sure yours run better than mine did because it was lagging all the time.

I tried the stable version of Froyo and Gingerbread, and the latest nightly as well. Is it swap space that would fix the problem?

P.S. if you are in Canada PM me BEFORE JUNE 10, 2011 and I will tell you how to get a p500 for under $70 with no contract.

I'm glad you got a new phone. Yes, the low RAM is the Galaxy's culprit and since I don't have any fast external SD card, I never really looked into using swap. I tried compcache but it didn't work wonders either. I wonder why your battery life was so bad though, and to me even though it isn't the fastest the phone is usable.

Also, you might have noticed that overclocking your Galaxy didn't do much in terms of performance, simply because the (lack of) RAM is what causes most lag.

Being in Canada, I sent you a private message, I am really interested in getting an upgrade for only $70! (Sorry Lelouch )

Default Swap Space

To add more memory I am going to try creating a swap space on a 2gb microsd card. Here is the tutorial I found- it says that afterwards I will be able to run Angry Birds smoothly. I use angry birds as a benchmark.

Quote:
Download "Swapper for Root" <--- Typed exactly like that and run it makinf 128mb Swap on SD Card FAT Partition
This will create 128mb swap file named swap.swp
After this. Download Swapper 2 from market
Open swapper 2 and go to preferences. Set swappiness to 15-60 and change the file size to match the previously created, and the name of the file. Then go back to the main screen of Swapper 2 and press ON
Swapper 2 should now be able to set Swap on @ the previously created file.
Also. Replacing the default ADW launcher with lighter one (Zeam or Launcher Pro <- Dont know if its lighter, but surely runs smooth.) helps to gain performance.
And one more thing. Dont even BOTHER to OC your phone. Trust me.
In GAOSP Confg change the setting to match these:
Min CPU 120
Max CPU 528
CPU Performance
Sensors: Battery (Unless you use GPS make it Performance)
Cyannogen Mod Settings:
Disable Comcache
Set VM heap to 16
Lock both home and msg app in mem
Memory Thresholds:
1st 7MB
2nd: 9MB
3rd: 17MB
4th: 34MB
5th and 6th 26MB
Phone is faster than before atleast for me. Even Angry birds runs without problems.
Please thank if this guide helped you

When I tried to get rid of the latest nightly I managed to wipeout my nandroid backup. I reinstalled GAOSP 2 beta 3. I did a factory reset/wipe then rebooted.

It boots up but I am greeted by:

"UIDs on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable"

I redid it all, I had forgotten to Fix Package Permissions. My nandroid backups are permanently lost, but it doesnt seem to matter
Froyo and angry birds with swap partition.... here I come.

Yep, I'm using external SD card for swap files for almost a year now. It fixes some problem regarding lag (angry birds will suck on Galaxy) but don't expect miracles. It seems the new fugeswap will make things interesting on Galaxy (you should see fugeswap in work in GAOSP 3 sticky).

@DaSchmarotzer - so you're jumping from the ship, huh? Well my contract ends in first days of August so...

Probably, the Optimus One is a better phone and for such a ridiculous price I'll gladly accept. It's not top-end either, I'll wait for my upgrade to get that.

I still have a long time on my contract, especially since my carrier decided to push back my upgrade eligibility by almost 6 months.

Any idea what you'll get?

Thanks for the Fugeswap tip! I am going to prepare this phone for my family so I will leave it with Froyo (camera works). I had angry birds running on it once with no swap space but it was laggy when trying to shoot, the birds would just take off. In GAOSP 3 gingerbread I couldnt even run it. Downloading it took about 80 attempts because the wireless kept disconnecting.

1. Are you ok with the gingerbread nightly wireless and GPS, Lelouch?

I replaced the burnt out LCD in the galaxy with a chinese screen, it seems to have better resolution than the optimus one (O1). I never saw the original screen. So the galaxy still has a nicer screen, it feels better to touch, the camera is much better and has torch.

2. I dont suppose anyone tried soldering on some more ram to the galaxy? Swapspace should do a similar job but I dont have a class 10 microsd card to test, only an old 2gb.

3. Do you have any youtube videos of how your galaxy runs lelouch?

I'm at the crossroad.
Saving money to buy a new PC (damn AMD and their buldozer CPU) and monitor, so...
...my only option is to go via the line off less resistance (save money on mobile unit).
So, LG Optimus One is a option (how many memory does it have - I read 512 MB, but my believe is shaky to say the list), but it depends on the situation (who knows maybe Sam*censored Ace - there goes my no more Sam*censored policy ). My wish is a dual-core one (something that CyanogenMod supports or future Drakaz ROM), but that will must wait a year or more to have more choices to choose from. But my priority this year is a brand new PC (saving money for it and waiting for CPU reviews on Xbitlabs.)
Optimus One: to bad the camera is 3 MP (my preference is from 5 MP+) and no LED flash (if it did, it would be better then Galaxy). And no flash support or am I wrong???
How do you look at it DaSchmarotzer? Which preference do you have for camera?/How many MP's is enough to make you satisfied?

@Turds Gingerbread nightly works like a charm for me, almost instant GPS fix and Wi-Fi works like it should (no bugs). And no I don't have a Youtube video of my Galaxy. You should try some memory presets and also installing new GAOSP conf in order to remove some unneeded system apps and "clear CACHE" widget which makes our Galaxy snapier or wait for the next nightly. Don't forget to try using different "Launcher" in order to make easier weight for Galaxy (Zeam comes to mind, or other with presets) - uses less memory.
Also to make things clearer: Gingerbread uses more RAM than Froyo, so...
...you get the point. But it has better memory management and better graphics for gaming. We must be clear on one stuff - our Galaxy was never meant for gaming.

EDIT: regarding camera - it seems nopy will take a look why it hags while taking pictures

P.S: while at gaming Sony's future smartphone dedicated for gaming sounds yummy (I'm JRPG fan thru and thru ). Enough for now... ...going to sleep.
