Well, my goal was to just get it out to the people who aren't able to obtain it on their own. It's a shame that people who purchase the phone through one carrier (or unlocked) can't get the updates that other carriers get in different parts of the world, especially when those updates fix such critical bugs. I would have been SOL with regards to these updates, being in the US, without this forum.
The truth is that anyone could have gotten this update if they had an older VIA firmware on their phones already. It's just easier if someone releases it so that the double-flashing and NPS nonsense isn't necessary. I don't need to take credit for anything, really.
Nonetheless, it may be beneficial to do what you suggest in the future just to keep people on this forum, since it's been such a great resource. I'll also won't use rapidshare again. ;-) (Thanks, guys, for reposting after the limit was reached!)
On another note, there's something people who are trying to flash a CSC/firmware that don't match (i.e., one that wasn't officially paired by Samsung) should know: you won't be able to use NPS to upgrade in the future. What NPS is looking for is a specific combination of CSC and firmware to provide an upgrade path. If you mix and match your own, it won't provide you with an upgrade. Of course, you could just use Odin to flash one of the older version and do the upgrade via NPS that way. (Or just get all your firmware upgrades on the forum.)

I was suspecting so, but anyway, does that mean you won't be able to upgrade your phonee via NPS if you bought your device carrier-free?
On another note, NPS version number looks like should pair your CSC, but then again, I had IH4 but I couldn't upgrade it via NPS to II5 because I got an 'unsuported device'.
Anyway, I decided to upgrade to II5 without CSC, since I had my first problems with Android market after CSC-ing my Galaxy on last update.
(my Galaxy is german, but I use it in Spain)
I currently have H8 with a German csc (I bought the phone from Germany so I don't have a problem with that) and everything's working fine including the seeing protected market apps).
Does anyone know what is included in I5 and if it's actually worth upgrading? Especially as 1.6 firmware will be released soon.
Why are there no release notes to go with these firmware updates? This is very poor support and PR from Samsung.

i can still see everything after flashing although i made sure i deleted the cache image as i got hit by this last time when using the csc cache for h8
im in the uk. i can see uk paid apps and ebuddy now with ii5
this goes with what i was saying all along and ressu finally confirmed this. Cache holds more information that just provider specific settings and as such can affect things like market etc

I'm no expert, but I'm not seeing a link between csc and the market. I bought my device carrier free and initially had no market access, I've since with h7, h8 and now i5 on both h7 and h8 I initially couldn't see vertain apps like ebuddy and osmap, however they appeared the other day and installed fine, they are still visible in the market now on i5. I've never had a csc file flashed to this phone.
This issue is more than just location related. The csc I have now is German (I upgraded to H8 without removing the csc cache.img file) and the market shows protected apps (after lots of complaints to Google, the market issue was fixed).
I can't believe that with every firmware update, the android market will stop working!
Not using the new csc will simply leave me with the German H8 csc (which does not have the market problem), so I think I'll stick with H8 firmware until Samsung release something official. I'm getting tired of upgrading blindly only to be hit with new problems. The phone is quite stable and responsive now (only problem is OpenGL 3D).
However, thanks to all the guys who have spent time providing upgrade files that Samsung should have been providing and supporting officially.

same here
EDIT: after performing a factory reset (due to another problem), I just realized some apps are again missing on android market...FFS!

There is a link between CSC and the market. I initially assumed that they weren't connected at all. But after taking apart the CSC package shipped with the firmware I had to change my opinion.
First post so be nice (-: I got a Galaxy on release day from O2 UK, and have been lurking on the forums here for a few weeks. Hello! Just thought I'd share my experience here.
I've Odin-updated the phone from its stock H6 firmware to H7, H8 and now to I5. I've never applied any CSC files, so the branding is as shipped.
I didn't immediately see a problem with the market because I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for, but by the time I'd graduated to H8 I realised that I was affected (noteably "Record It", the paid-for remote recorder for Sky+ was missing, also the ubiquitous but woefully named eBuddy).
Checked my phone yesterday (running H8) and noticed that the problem had fixed itself. "Great," thinks I, went to purchase Record It and realised that my payment method needed setting back up, didn't have my wallet and figured I'd do it later.
Got home last night, flashed up to I5, then went to buy my app and - it's disappeared again.
So, presumably with each firmware revision, it requires Google to update their database to allow the new firmware / CSC pairing? Is there anything we can do about that, or is it just a case of sitting and waiting it out each time?
From my experience and what others are saying here, there is no link between csc and market.
It looks more like there is a link between firmware version and market, but I don't know for certain.
What is certain is that the problem is 100% on Google's side. They have admitted this and both Galaxy and Hero users in Europe have had problems with accessing protected apps on the market.
Perhaps Google are trying to prevent access to the market from unauthorised firmware.
It does seem to be a whitelist rather than a blacklist, so that'd make sense.
A mate of mine has an unbranded Galaxy that he bought handset-only, and he's been happily getting updates through NPS. I've just asked if he's got full market access, am awaiting a reply.
And he's just replied, confirming that he's also affected. He's only ever updated through NPS (currently on I5), so I'm guessing it's unrelated to operator branding. It must solely be down to firmware revision - each new version needs enabling at Google's end.

i did not factory reset my device this time but i can still access them all
if its not csc related this time then thats a good thing as it means google will update the code eventually. it is something they will need to sort out effectively though as updates for this phone come out every week lol
gmail sync was having problems for me today and yesterday on h8 and i5 so i would assume its to do with googles sync servers and not the firmware itself
menu transitions seem alot faster on this version

Just a thought. If I had bought the aforementioned apps and then updated the firmware to an affected version, would it have crippled those apps, or is it purely the initial purchasing that's affected?
Cos, obviously, the former is a much bigger problem than the latter.
Rasta, myself and a mate who has paid for gmail accounts had issues with Contacts yesterday. It was google, not the phones.
My phone is still as received from O2. I'm hesitant to update anything manually. I'd rather hassle Samsung until they sort out their software (emailed them today).

yeah i know, i was replying to a poster who mentioned sync issues
Just to consolidate a few things into one message (this should be part of an FAQ, really)...
BASEBAND VERSION
This is more commonly referred to as the "firmware" version (e.g. I7500XXII5), though the *actual* Android firmware version is something different altogether (e.g. Cupcake 1.5).
"XX" refers to the Western European region, so users in other areas will have different letters here. The last three characters tell you when the firmware was released:
A = 1
B = 2
C = 3
D = 4
E = 5
F = 6
G = 7
H = 8
I = 9
J = 10
K = 11
L = 12
etc..
So the sequence is year, month release number.
IH8 = 8th release in August 2009
II5 = 5th release in September 2009
JB2 = 2nd release in February 2010 (just an example!)
Not all releases are available publicly. Some releases are internal to Samsung, so don't always expect to see the version numbers increment in sequence.
THE CSC FILE
This file uses the same numbering system as the Baseband in the last three characters.
This delivers operator-specific branding, configuration and applications. The operator can be derived from the three characters in the version number:
VIA = O2 (Germany)
O2U = O2 (UK)
ITV = Vodafone (Italy)
BOG = Bouygues Telecom (France)
You can find out your current CSC version by dialling the following "number" on your phone:
*#*#44336#*#*
A "null" value for the CSC code when you dial the above number means you don't have a CSC code.
If you don't want an operator's specific customisations and configurations, don't use the CSC file in the upgrade. You can remove the CSC file (cache.img) from a one-package firmware file using an application such as JZip (www.jzip.com). Open the .tar file, click the cache.img file and then press your delete key.
UPDATING FIRMWARE VIA NEW PC STUDIO (NPS)
This uses a combination of your Baseband number and your CSC number. If you don't have a combination that's known to Samsung, you won't get updates. If you don't have a CSC at all, you also won't get updates via NPS.
If you can't update via NPS, you can always use Odin and the various firmwares that people make available on this forum without restriction.
APPS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET
This is down to one of two things.
1. It's a new baseband release. Google need to add this to their whitelist so you can see paid and protected apps. You just need to wait a bit for that to happen and it isn't a phone issue. This seems to be the cause of 99% of the "app not available" threads in this forum. You can modify the build fingerprint in /system/build.prop if you have rooted your phone if you need a more immediate solution.
2. You're not in a country where the application is available. Google seems to determine your country using the operator details from your SIM card (using the Mobile Country Code: Mobile Network Code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The CSC file does *not* seem to be a factor here.
Hope this helps!
Chris

My CSC is listed as "null", whereas his shows "I7500XXII5". O2 Germany, I'd guess this is from.
I'm on II5 and using the stock build.prop with the default fingerprint. The only thing I did was use market enabler to spoof t mobile and i can see ebuddy.

Well I've just tried it and apparently Houston has a problem!
Is there a decent notepad-esque text editor app for Android that I could use to edit build.prop without mangling it, save copying files back and forth?
Your choices are kind of limited due to the fact that you need to remount system as read/write. The only app I know with what you need is not free. it's su.fbs.

The best text editor I've found is called, incidentally, Text Edit. It's quite plain, but works more like a regular Notepad.exe than an Android note pad app.
The phone is (theoretically at least) rooted using the hdblog recovery partition. I can adb-pull the file fine, edit it in Notepad, but when I try to adb remount ready to push it back I get told "remount failed: operation not permitted" - what am I missing?
adb root also fails, "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". I can run su from a command prompt on the device though (for what good that does).
The reason for remount failed in a normal boot up is due to root not being enabled for adbd. Recovery root is only for recovery and if you enabled su, it's for apps on the phone.
To remount like what you did, you'll need to edit the prop file in the kernel image. You can't edit it on the phone since the changes will not be saved.
Reflashed my phone without the CSC branding for I5. Have had a day to play with it and i'm really impressed this time round. Battery life lasted really well today and that was with 3g , GPRS, and Auto Sync enabled. Does feel smoother too going from differant home screens.
One thing I'd really like to see is the scrolling improved as sometimes when you're scrolling through a web page it can be a bit jagged or it will just suddenly want to jump and continue to the bottom of a page which can be very annoying. I think the general tactile nature of the touch screen needs to be improved as pressing links in Twidroid can be very frustrating and can take multiple times to get right.
One other thing I have noticed is that it still has the wireless bug where it loses its connection. The way I fix it is to use the switchers app to turn off and then on the wireless. I then have to go into the wireless settings where it then obtains an ip address. I really hope this soon gets fixed as it is quite frustrating.

i fixed that by changing the amount of channels to scan to 11, changed wpa mode to just wpa rather than wpa2 and changed the router wireless channel to 11
