Followed everything to the T and it worked great! The only issue I have is that instructions for installing the hboot files are a little off.
It says: "The unrEVOked3 recovery tool comes with the phone drivers you will need to use. They are in the directory hboot driver_files. Unrevoked has a great walk through for installing the drivers."
But, the unrevoked instructions for installing the phone drivers do not involve any files in the "hboot driver_files" directory. You have to download a .zip file that's called out in their walk through.
I would look into updating this part of the guide.

I had to download the zip from unrevoked as well. I couldn't find them in the recover tool folders.
So, I'm finally going to take the plunge, after gearing up to do it then chickening out. I have the reflash package from unrevoked, but do I need to do the Android.sdk step on John's page, or will unrevoked handle everything for me? I assumed I had to do the .sdk first, then use the reflash which will do everything else for me, but then I see everyone talking about how they rooted in one click and I pause. I just don't want to brick the phone and end up stuck with an Eris or something.

You use the sdk to do other things, like remove unwanted software, get AdFree working, or reboot the phone into recovery mode by simply typing "adb reboot recovery." No more holding down buttons while turning on the phone
I wish I could thank you twice. This is a really nice guide. Re: Unrevoked 3, I deleted htc sync and make sure I was enabling 'charge only' when I plugged into the computer in order to get root to work.
Had some trouble with AdFree, and still don't have it set up. Oh well. got cyanogenmod running. I'm exhausted.

after following all the directions, I did get my startup screen to display the DROID X Eye, but when adding the sound it caused my startup screen to go blank now on startup.
I have tried several more times and am failing to get the EYE to appear (not so much worried about the sound *although it would be nice*)
So, my question, how do I delete what is in that pushed folder (data\local) to reinstall, or, how do I make this right with picture and/or sound.
************* Boot animation
Custom boot animations can range from geeky to cool and are easy to install.
Geeky Boot Animation
Download the animation you want to use. Rename the file to bootanimation.zip. The only files in the zip file should be part0 and part1 directories and a desc.txt file.
Put the bootanimation.zip file into your tools directory (c:\sdk\tools)
Reboot the phone into recovery (adb reboot recovery)
Using the clockworkmod recovery menu on the phone mount /data
use the command adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local (You can also put the file on your sdcard and use the command mv /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local/)
Reboot
If you want the sound file that goes along with the “cool” boot animation, download it and us the adb push command to push it to the same location as the bootanimation.zip file. (Thanks jtcarnes.) **************

not sure what I did, but I DID get the Droid X Eye now on the startup screen....just need to now get the DROID Sound working with it.
thanks guys
have you applied the leaked OTA radio update? no issues at all during the install/update? I keep reading how this one is hit or miss, some get lucky others get bricked.....

I tired the Froyo Leak and didn't have any troubles. I returned to stock, applied the OTA radio, rooted, wiped, installed ROM, restored apps via titanium. Everything worked well for me.
I've since reinstalled the RUU to downgrade my radio back to 1.0 and am running 2.1 for the time being. I'm waiting for ROM based off the released OTA.
Thanks to Jon and the fellers over at unrEVOked, I am now rooted. Did it on Mac OS X Leopard.
The only issues I ran into were my own fault. I either completely missed the part where you're supposed to set it to charge only or it just wasn't there because it's common sense and i'm an idiot. Who knows? Anyway... Titanium and AdFree weren't doing what they were supposed to because it was in disk drive mode. I figured that out after unplugging and trying again (on a whim). Now all is well. Thanks again.
Jon I'm rooting now...doing a nandroid backup at the moment. Big thanks to you and Unrevoked. Your guide is great. I'm just gonna run rooted 2.1 as you're doing and wait for a stable 2.2 ROM based off the OTA.
It sounds like the card is flaky. Now that you've formatted the card try doing a backup again. If it doesn't work, try it on a different card.
If it works on a different card I'd exchange the one you have for a new one.
I also have the same card and I am getting the same problem with the backup. When you start the backup, it does check the SD card and replies with the amount of free space. I figured if it can see the card and give the free space then the backup would work.
I will try a new card to see if that corrects the issue.
Any other thoughts on this problem???
Ok, I tried a new SD card from Verizon. I formatted the card using the phone and then ran the Nandroid Backup.
This did not work either. Still getting
no /sdcard/.android_secure found.
Skipping backup of applications on external storage.
Backing up cache.....
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum....

can anyone help me with updating the radio to 2.0? I am at the point where i have to run recovery and it comes up with a black screen and a picture of a phone and a red hazard sign?? nothing else..... I pull the battery and it loads up ok, but still with the same radio? Any suggestions?? I downloaded the ota, and renamed it update.zip and moved it to the root of my sdcard....
i got it! stupid mistake.... have a nice night....

The no /sdcard/.android_secure found error is because you do not have the folder .android_secure on your sdcard. This folder is used for App2SD capability in 2.2.
The no sd-ext error is because you don't have the sd-ext partition on your sdcard (also used in App2SD).
Neither is an error really, they are just notifications that those items aren't located on your sdcard.

I got these 2 same errors.. but I am on 2.1 so why references to 2.2? how do you correct this issue?

I followed your instructions for running froyo, I finished the whole first part fine until I got up to, "You can now re-root your phone by running Unrevoked 3 and make a new Stock + OTA Antenna backup in nandroid." When I tried running it, it's been stuck at "Flashing recovery image. Do not touch your phone!" Does anyone know whats wrong?
Many thanks to Jonathan for clarifying/documenting a fairly muddy process. My primary objective in rooting was to get all the bloatware crap that VZW sticks on the phone <rant>(goodbye FriendStream you useless piece of @*&$@# - you know HTC, not all of your users are 16 y.o. nitwits, some of us have ZERO interest in polluting our phones with FB updates; next thing to go will be Rosie and HTCs pathetic excuse for a Contacts app)</rant>.
The phone is noticeably faster now and I am now running post boot with 80MB less of stuff in RAM!.

Thanks for the donation!
If you root you will not lose anything. If you make a nandroid backup it will keep all of your applications and settings as they were at that point. If you restore that backup it will be like taking your phone back in time. This is why it's also good to use Titanium Backup on a regular schedule. If you had to restore from a nandroid backup you can use Titanium to restore all apps, settings, and things like sms, mms, e-mails, etc that are more recent than nandroid.
I am trying to Root with XP and unrevoked just sits at the screen plug phone in and enable usb debugging. I installed the drivers smoothly but unrevoked is just sitting at that screen. Any help?
I was able to figure it out.

Jon, I'm currently rooted with a stock 2.1 DINC...no ROMs, kernels, etc. Just rooted. If I wanted to install the offical OTA when it comes out, would I have to unroot/revert back or could I just install it? I know I would lose root by installing it, just wondering if the phone would get bricked or otherwise messed up.

If you haven't installed the leaked antenna update you should be fine. My recommendation is not install the update once it's released and wait for reports posted here.

Hey I have a question can I achieve root on Windows 7 I don't really wanna install xp but if I must i must.
I'm running windows7 and have rooted many times. I have heard there may be issues with the unrevoked drivers on a 64-bit OS, but I'm not positive about that.
when following this guide, after I install the drivers, do I disconnect from the PC and reboot, then plug back in, thats the only spot im stuck at
*got it...i am rooted!*

Thanks for the help and i'm now rooted via Unrevoked's method, still running the stock 2.1 ROM that came with the phone although I didn't backup anything using Titanium......is that ok?
Are you rooted and still waiting on a stable ROM or have you ventured off into new territory and running the Cyanogen6 or Skyfire 2.2?
I love the wireless tethering option as well as the 720p feature, but not sure if I should take the plunge and start messing with Kernel's and ROM's since i'm new to this and wouldn't want to mess up anything especially with the OTA rumored to be coming to us soon.

also i cant push the audio file for bootup to the phone. got the X eye over b ut cant get the sound. does it have to be renamed or can it be sent as is?

Just wanted to get your .02$ on this matter
I've tried Cyanogen - it was nice. I upgraded to the leaked 2.2 and played with that for a while, but found it to be pretty buggy. I'm still on 2.1 waiting for the OTA update. Once it's out I'll install a ROM based on that.

The audio file should be named android_audio.mp3 and pushed to the /data/local directory, unless you're running 2.2, then it's in a different location with a different filename.

I too would rather wait till a more stable ROM comes out....talking about that, will you be downloading the new Unrevoked Forever root method? If so, do you think I would have to unroot then install this one or could I just save the file to my sd card and go through the process as I did the first time? Would I lose the wifi tethering and 720p recording?
