Not sure why. I just got root last night, along with thousands of other people I'm sure.
First thing I did was install incredilight to make sure I had root.
Then I put Wireless Tether on there. It'll create a network that my laptop can see (Windows 7) but my laptop never can get internet access out of it. Always keeps the little yellow triangle with the !.
Anybody had trouble and figured out how to get passed this?
Use Astro, PC or card reader to see if you have an Android.tether folder on the root of your SD card. It might be worthwhile for somebody to post the folder for download, seems like some or all people using the new method aren't getting the proper files to run tether?? I thought it was floating around somewhere due to similar problems some had using the original method but I haven't found it yet.
Downloading it from the market isn't working correct?

This folder is part of the old school rooting guys, look to the posts for that.

Ok man thanks, is there a setting we are all missing or what? Well their page says ad hoc, but I'm not sure what I'm missing? So the.bin works, just something else to do.

I'm new to this and I don't have a android.tether file after rooting last night with unrevoked. How can I create a android.tether folder. I'm using Astro and cant seem to find it in the sd card root. I want to tether my ipad to it so bad. All I get from wifi tether is a connection but no internet. How do I create this folder and how do I get the .bin file into that folder. Can I just plug the phone into the computer and navigate the sd card and put it in there that way or is there another way to do it.
Do it on your computer. Go into it via "my computer" and then just create the folder in the root of what is the SD card folder. NOT the phone storage. Then put the wifi tether apk in there as well as the .bin file. I googled the .bin file since the above link is dead. Use this one:
1)Download a HTC Evo 4g system-dump (use google search - I bet you will find one) 2)Extract a file named fw_bcm4329_ap.bin (located in /system/etc/firmware) 3)Mount your sdcard 4) Create a directory named "android.tether" (without quotes) 5) Open this directory and copy/move fw_bcm4329_ap.bin into it. 6) Rename fw_bcm4329_ap.bin to fw_bcm4329.bin 7)Install the latest versions of "wireless tether"

Worked like a charm, never got the notification the clients had connected before. now all is good, ran a speed test on my laptop and got 1mb down 512 up
Thank you so much to all here that took the time to explain this at TOTAL NOOB level for us! Thanks have been given to all of you! I thought I had installed the tether correctly last night at work and was ecstatic. I got home this morning to find that it did not work. I had the same issue as above where I did not have the folder. After reading the above posts I went STEP BY STEP which I loved and again thank you all for and it works like a charm now. Thanks for helping us morons. If any of you ever need to know how to do an emergency tracheotomy with a steak knife and ball point pen or need to know how to relieve a collapsed lung or the such, look me up and I will gladly hold your hand and step by step you through it! Once again, thanks guy and gals!

That's the "back door" approach that somebody figured out how to do and posted about, correct?
It's how a rooted phone does it as well. Anytime you have an address for internet service in the ##778 settings that has dun after the @ will redirect you too a tether charge page whether rooted or not.
ok so i downloaded the most recent version
put the .bin file in the android.tether folder on the sd card
moved the .apk file to the android.tether folder
restarted the phone
turned on the tether app, had my pc connect, it shows up as a PC to PC network, it connects
BUT doesnt load any sites, says resolving host and then shows me this

I was having the same problem as others....it would be "connected" but I had no internet....until I connected the phone to the PC....browsed the SD card from the PC and created a folder called android.tether and then put two files (fw_bcm4329 & wireless_tether_2_0_2) inside the android.tether folder. Then I disconnected the phone from PC....then waited for the phone to show up under network connections....works great now
Edit: Thank you everyone that posted instructions and the two files I needed. Many Thanks!
i followed the instructions posted and it still didnt work. so i thought to restart by just uninstalling wireless tether and reinstalling it after i made the folder and put the file in.
now it works. but when i search for connections on my laptop i see two connections, my SSID name that i set and one that says android tether. the android tether doesnt connect though. weird.

FINALLY one of the reasons I left my IPhone 3g and moved to the incredible was to wirelessly tether my laptop and IPad, now thanks to your directions I am posted tethered right now. THANK YOU!!
I think killing the task (stopping it from running in the background also) with a program like Systempanel after you make the folder on your sd card/copy the files helped me also. After copying the files, I started up the app and it didn't work again, but then I went and manually killed it with Systempanel, and after restarting it, wifi tether worked.
I guess restarting your phone would do the same thing, though.
Got it working had to add the "android.tether" and add the fw_bcm4329.bin file, it worked like charm on my iTouch, but when I connected a Linksys G wireless usb to my PC, it connects and says there is internet, but when I open the browser, theres nothing. why is that? something I need to setup?
EDIT: NVM it oddly started to work fine on my PC now.

Do I need to do this in Windows or can I do it in OSX?
I don't see why you couldn't do it with OSX as long as you can connect to the phone and modify the contents of your SD card. Granted, I'm not a Mac guy, but I can't see any reason why it WOULDN'T work...
Guys, could use some help, new to rooting.. simple question (mounting the sd card is as easy as just plugging it in via USB right?), if thats the case, I did that but my Incredible mounts with a Removable E and a removable F drive.. not sure the difference but I made a android.tether folder in both of them and then placed the files needed in both folders, no luck on my ipad with the wireless network, it shows it there.. connects to it.. but no browsing.. help!
Finally got it working after a bunch of reinstalls, moving the files around.. and turning the phone off and on. It works, don't know how or why, but it works.

my friend had iPhone 3gs and could wirelessly tether...but thats the only reason I wanted to root was for the wireless tethering, but it will work for about 15 min then stop.
i followed all of the instructions including adding the android.tether folder and bin file. I open wifi tether and it hangs at .4 down and won't connect.
any ideas?
I've tried doing everything here but I still can't get wireless tethering to work. Everytime it says 0.4 down and stops. I've reinstalled the app over and over again, I have the .bin file on the sdcard under "android.tether". Frustrating!
