Your sd card also has to be formatted to FAT32.
Please don't laugh but how do I know if it is FAT32? I just put in a new sd card, my other was giving up the ghost?

With your sd card mounted to the PC, right click on the drive, select properties, you will see the type of formatting.

Yeah! Thank you it is FAT32. I have been reading and reading and I want to root so bad but I am so overwelmed. I almost want to send my phone to one of ya'll and let ya'll root for me and then send it back. But I think I can, I think I can, I think I can....

sorry for the shortness of my replys the last couple days, guys. been a busy couple days and i havent had much time for the actual computer krisdr, sdraws advice is excellent. download everthing, check the md5s,and organize it all.

then just do one step at a time... i see alot of folks that are a bit overwelmed to just run unrevoked 3.22 first and get root, take a breather for a day or 2,then continue. you can technically stop there, but as iowa said,i think it is well worth the efforts to dowgrade and achieve s-off.

where are you located? if youre aywhere near dayton, ohio,id be happy to help you with it

if youve gotten yourself down to 2.2 thats the tricky part unrevoked 3.32 has been the root standard for the incredible for quite a long time, might want to do some searches in the rest of the forum, maybe post up a new thread,as your questions/issues arent being seen here by ALOT of folks that may know the answers.

did unrevoked install clockwork recovery? if so,your root solution is easy

I have been taking a break for several days. I am ready to try. I wish I lived closer but I am in New Mexico. I am carefully reading over and over your instructions and I need my hand held (can you tell I am a girl). I tried to run md5 to verify recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc but it does not show up when I run md5 summer. Any suggestions?

this file is a .exe file. you wont need to turn the phone on. boot into hboot, then select fastboot with the power button. now right click on the download for the gingerbread .exe and "run as administrator" if it gives you that option. otherwise, just double click on it.

if your battery isnt being charged with the phone off,you may need to find someone with another inc, eris,or something else that battery fits in and have them charge it for you. alternatively, you could prolly take it to a store and have them charge it.

lol, glad its working. you can go ahead and make a backup if you want(its a good idea) and then just reboot. or if you want, just reboot and then you can go back to recovery later if you want to make a backup.

So now I can go through the downgrade process. When you say to put the extracted folder on the root of your c\ drive, what do you mean exactly? Please do not laugh.

the file is a .zip file. right click on it,and then click extract. this should put all the stuff inside into a regular,non-zipped filder.

in windows 7,if you right click onthe start bubble, then click on "open windows explorer" it will open a window that shows all of the different drives on your computer.

take the non-zipped normal folder that you exctracted, then put it onto the C drive in this window. you can do this by right clicking on the folder, then click copy, then go to the c drive and click "paste".

you can also open 2 of the explorer windows, one showing all your drives, and the other showing your extracted file. you can use your mouse to drag it from one place to another. this is personally how i move files, but either way is fine.

if you cannot extract the .zip like i described above, you may need to download a utility called "7 zip" to use to extract it.

hope that helps

I did exactly what it says to do on the first page of this. Just the root part I didn't go any further. So I did steps 1 and 2 then stopped and it gave me a black screen and my htc incredible looping screen for recovery.

Ok. So I am ready to do the fourth step and downgrade with abd. I am in charge mode, 100% charged, USB debugging is on and I type in what was listed in the instructions and this is what I got.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\kris>cd c:\mini-adb_inc
The system cannot find the path specified.

Anyone have any suggestions?

It sounds like the mini-adb_inc zip is in fact NOT on the root of the c: drive. What this means is that you go to your c drive and place the file directly on the drive such that it is not inside another folder.

When you use windows explorer and you notice a folder on your c:, some of them may have a + by it. When you click on that, it will expand out perhaps several more folders and they may also have subfolders. You do not want that situation where you have to drill into a bunch of folders to get to mini-adb_inc. Think tree diagram...where the c: is the trunk (or root). You want this zip to be an only branch such that it reports directly to the c: drive itself and nothing else.

I apologize if I overexplained that.

Ok now... I got all the way through putting in the su at the $ prompt but then it said permission denied. Help....

Got past all the commands. the instructions say that after you put in adb reboot bootloader is will take you to fastboot then select bootloader. I tried that but it just went to the hboot. What do I do?

It's supposed to goto hboot. You should have the PB31IMG.zip file on the root of your fat32 formatted SD card. If all goes well, that zip should be autodetected. It will then prompt you to load the file by pressing the volume up button.

So, either the file isn't on the card, isn't on the root of the card, or the card didn't take the fat32 formatting you should have already done/verified.

Stupid me. I put zip after PB31IMG. Now my problem is getting myphone to boot back up. It did not reboot fully. So I am going to try again to run PB31IMG. I saw that sometimes the phone does not fully reboot. Has anyone had a problem of it not every rebooting fully? I am a little nervous, I would be lost without it.

your phone isnt finding the file. check the first post for notes on flashing files in hboot.

brief recap:
1)sd card must be FAT32(not plain FAT or something else)

2)file must be correctly named(PB31IMG.zip on phone-check with file manager)

as long as you used the PB31IMG we provided in the first post, you dont have them matched. those 2 things are the only reasons PB31IMG is not found.

another error thats been made,is putting PB31IMG onto the internal memory instead of the sd card

again:
1)not FAT32
2)not named PB31IMG on phone
3)not on root of SD card
4)wrong file used

*only reasons not found

you can use an app like "quickboot",you can use the "boot to clockwork recovery for manual management" option in ROM manager, or you can enter thru hboot(turn phone off, then power/vol down. once in hboot use volume rocker and power button to select recovery)

[QUOTE=scotty85;3559447]as long as you used the PB31IMG we provided in the first post, you dont have them matched. those 2 things are the only reasons PB31IMG is not found.

another error thats been made,is putting PB31IMG onto the internal memory instead of the sd card

again:
1)not FAT32
2)not named PB31IMG on phone
3)not on root of SD card
4)wrong file used

*only reasons not found

ok, I think it got put onto both SD and phone storage. will try and remove tomorrow and continue. then recheck all four steps. appreciate it and pardon the stress. wife frustrated with issues and driving me nutty that I couldn't do this long ago. night sleep and back at it tomorrow.

thanks

no prollem. didnt mean to sound short, but that issue has been discused alot of times in the thread. there are only a couple things to go wrong, but they can be tricky to diagnose.

sometimes a good nights sleep is just the ticket

Sometimes, for whatever reason, the fat32 formatting just flat out doesn't take. I've had people format the card 3 times and on the 4th try, it picks up the file. Should be able to just right click on the drive after formatting and check the file type but sometimes it just don't cut it. If ALL else fails, try formatting again. For whatever unexplainable reason, certain sd cards are just fickle in this phone. It's been that way since day one.

again:
1)not FAT32
2)not named PB31IMG on phone

4)wrong file used

*only reasons not found

1) i reformatted card to fat32 again to erase and start it fresh
2) name reads PB31MG.zip on sd card, ( how can i make sure this is on the root?)
3) i used the file from the 1st post here, hopefully that is correct!? i even deleted and re-downloaded it to be sure then right on to the sd card after the unzip.
4) still reads "no image or wrong image" in green after first few steps in bootloader

what is the next step now? do i have to redo the command prompts again in order to access the boot loader with current information?

now when i download the pb31img file it shows that it cannot be opened my windows for some reason. to add another issue lol.

thanks again so much for the patience and help.

if you had the prollem after running unrevoked, maybe try re-downloading it? make sure its md5 sum matches

3) i used the file from the 1st post here, hopefully that is correct!? i even deleted and re-downloaded it to be sure then right on to the sd card after the unzip. youre not supposed to unzip it
4) still reads "no image or wrong image" in green after first few steps in bootloader

what is the next step now? do i have to redo the command prompts again in order to access the boot loader with current information? i would keep at it until your phone finds and checks PB31IMG. when it does, youll prolly get a "main version higher" error, but thats ok,at least youll know its finding the file correctly. once you get that far, then youll have to start again with the adb commands.

now when i download the pb31img file it shows that it cannot be opened my windows for some reason. to add another issue lol. again, youre not supposed to unzip or extract the PB31IMG downgrade. youll just rename it,and leave it zipped. if youve been trying all this time with unzipped files, then this may be your prollem.

thanks again so much for the patience and help. your welcome

Default Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

Hi all,

I are noob, please halp!

-plug in your phone, and assuming you installed the drivers correctly, unrevoked 3.22 will start. let it do its thing. it will reboot a couple of times. when its finished,it may leave you on a blank screen. if this is the case, pull the battery and reboot.

So I have successfully completed all the steps before this one. Installing the drivers, making sure my phone is on debugging, charge only, etc and that unrevoked is using the correct recovery image.

I plug in my phone and unrevoked says it's doing it's thing... it installs, reboots my phone, and then says Rooting.. but after a while, I get "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"

I have tried changing my phone to mount as disk drive, as some other forums have suggested. I have tried deleting some applications on my phone that might have caused the problem (task killer, Zysploit), I have basically tried every suggestion on other forums, but I keep getting the same error message.

Can anyone help?? Much appreciated!

Mac Unrevoked 3.22: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.22/Reflash.dmg

IF that one is not correct, let me know (I had a few versions downloaded before I found the right one).

Good luck! It worked great for me.
GREAT FIND lovejess!!! This worked perfectly! I tried searching for this something like this last week, but my Googling skills apparently are not as sharp as yours. Anyway, I'm s-on rooted for now, bloatware gone, apps backed up. Scotty and everyone else, thanks again for all of this work! If I can figure out the how the code translates into Mac Terminal, I'll post back.

I am so new to this but for all you who are too the instructions are dead on. If you are having troubles first go to "search this thread" and put in a key word to search your problem. There is bound to be an answer or two already in the thread. That is when all the pieces fell into place for me.

For a couple of problems I had I will address here for any noob that has the same.

When you put the mini-adb_inc on your c drive root... do not put in a file and then open it and then put on your c drive. Put the file unzipped on it. And then unzip.

Also when putting PB31IMG on your sd card, you may have to play with the name. Although it might not say .zip, your phone may read it with the .zip. Try to play with the name if it does not work. You might have to play with it and add it.

I have to do several steps, several times.

Don't get discouraged because it does work. These guys are great and they know what they are doing. I am so blessed to have found ya'll.

well,if you read the first post, you will see that this thread is NOT for the inc 2

be forwarned, however, that closest RUU i can find to yours is 3.06.1401.0,so you may want to make a backup of your system, boot, and recovery images with adb,or at least make a nandroid backup of your stock system in recovery in case you ever need it.

option #1 for you is to follow the link on the first post to downgrade to .97 hboot so you can run revolutionary.

option#2 would be to purchase or borrow an xtc clip to turn the radio secure flag off. i cant say for sure it will work with 1.04 hboot, but it worked on mine with .98. clips are expensive to buy for 1 time use,but if you search craiglist or the forums youll usually be able to find someone fairly close that could use the clip to unlock your phone. ive seen folks charge anywhere from free to US $30ish

#1 is reversable. #2 is forever. you cannot turn s-on after using the clip.

hope that helps

Thank you for these instructions. I was able to accomplish everything here and then downloaded CyanogenMod 7.1. Looks like I have plenty of storage space now in that 150MB data partition that was filling up constantly! *fingers crossed*

The only flub has been the loss of most of my contacts.

Awesome guide. Thanks for the instructions. Unrevoked scared the crap out of me when I ran it. As soon as it opened it started the root process before I could select the recovery file. The root process ran just fine and my phone is currently doing a nandroid. Superuser installed and is working. I tested it with a screenshot app. I guess Unrevoked started running because I had the recovery file in the same folder as the unrevoked .exe file.

For the moment I am going to stay s-on. I will probably fix this in the next few weeks when I have more time. I also think I am going to leave CWM alone too. My phone is amoled so the version that is flashed with Unrevoked runs just fine. Unless there are other reasons to upgrade?

Once again great guide. I'm off to get Titanium and debloat my phone a little.
