also,if the dev cooks the updates into the rom youre running,the differences are likely minor enuff that you can do a "dirty flash" overtop of your current rom:
-make a backup(just in case)
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik
*do NOT wipe data
-flash rom

doing this usually works out fine when flashing the same rom,with only minor updates/changes

OK, just a few more clarifications...

-I can just do the edit to the /system/build.prop, and not have to do anything more like flashing a rom, correct?

-before I reboot to recovery, do i need to find and remove the OTA update that the phone already downloaded? i saw a few posts that IF there is an update.zip on the SD card, then booting to recovery could result in the update being installed and/or brick the phone.

-just as a refresher... "boot to recovery" means
1) power down phone and remove battery
2) hold down both power and volume rockers while powering up phone by replacing the battery

is this going to bring up the CW recovery menu, or the default recovery menu?

[i did the battery out/in method the whole time while rooting to power the phone off/on, as it was easy and seemed to worked every time]

thanks. it worked great .. although i did have a long pause during final reboot at the droid "eye" that made me sweat a little, thinking i bricked it. the update notification showed up briefly, then went away forever! i never found the update.zip on the SD card, so it must have been in the cache or something

Hey, wondering if I could get some help here..

I have gotten as far as entering the token and recieving the Unlock Code, but once I do the command

fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

instead of my phone going to the bootloader screen, the command window gives the response

C:\ANDROID>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))

Any suggestions??

make sure unlock_code.bin is in your android folder. make sure the phone is in fastboot,not hboot.

other than that,make sure nothing is running on the PC that can communicate with the phone( pda ner,easy tether,htc sync,even i tunes)

try differen usb cables and ports

sometimes a reboot of phone and/or pc can help

this the token than you just got,with this phone,by following the guide,correct?

I completed process successfully and was on froyo. I fd up and uninstalled some system apps to prevent ota but then the Rom in op kept failing to install so I started over. Tried a bunch of things but it always fails when I try to reunlock writing failed I think but I will look again in sec. Right now I'm froyo locked s-off hboot 1.07........ any ideas?
Edit: oh yeah no root also. Can I unlock run unlock if I'm on froyo? In my panick I reset in bootloader
Edit2: Ok I read post #505 and my sit is very similar except mine says 'FAILED (remote: unlock token check failed)'.......also header says 'locked (oow)' I think....?...instead of relocked....do I need a new unlock bin?

You are s-off so you don't need to do anything. If the phone is not booting,run the downgrade ruu again,then install recovery using these directions: [How To] Regain Root With S-Off or HTC unlocked bootloader

You can then install a rom or restore a backup and update your radio as described in the finishing up section.

Follow the "finishing up" steps in the guide or proceed to picking out a ROM and flashing it... I just put the Jelly bean ROM on my old incredible and it seems to work well.

So i get everything done perfectly. I've gone through the steps three times (on Linux and Wndoze).

Each time I choose "Recovery" my HTC Incredible just sits at the white screen with the hTC letters (lime green) forever. I've waited up to 20 minutes.

Each time I take the battery out, it boots fine in the stock rom or I can go back to the hboot screens too.

I'm unlocked, but not rooted. Please help?

Make sure the boooader is still unlocked. Then you need to erase and reflash the recovery with fastboot.

fastboot erase recovery

cmlusco- My friend from xda... good to see you here... As you can tell... I'm still struggling to get the S-off and unlock

I was following the steps carefully until I got got too smart and wiped system, data and datadata even though the instructions only called for cache and dalvik..

I flashed cmlusco's TOB V3.0 to proceed
I got to step 4 and downgraded to froyo. But now the phone will not stay connected to the PC to continue. I'm not sure if this is due to be screwing up by wiping sys and data or the phone connector is acting up.

If the issues is only with the connector. How can I proceed from step on wards using the only the phone. I can move the sd card back and forth from the PC to get all the required files to root on sd card.

Looking for any kind of advise or direction

So you got all of step 4 done? After flashing the ruu did you remember to re enable usb debugging? The only way to flash the unlock_code.bin is to use fastboot. So you will need to get usb working for that. If you can get it unlocked, and a recovery flashed, you can do the rest without adb. I suppose since your on froyo already, you could do the froyo ruu again and see if that clears up your adb issue.

Yes, i would ruu with the froyo ruu and mabey it will fix the usb issue. From there you can re unlock it and flash a recovery, then su and the s-off patch.

Turns out the connector on the phone is broken(almost). I need to place the micro USB at an angle in order for it to connect.

I'll fix the port once i take care of the s/w

Mine was like that too. It was a combo of worn down port and a worn down usb plug. So i got a brand new usb cord and it fits much tighter now, so i dont need to have it a certain way to get it to work. Glad you figgured out the issue though.

Ok... I'm really close to stomping on this damn phone...
I did everything as suggested until step 7 and it still says S-ON... on the bright side it says unlocked..

Any suggestions on what I need to do now?

Also, when you say wipe cache... is it the cache partition or cache under mounts ans storage

Flashing #7 will give you s-off.

If that is not the issue... what else could it be?

What radio (baseband) version does it say in hboot? Do you get any errors when flashing the forever patch?

You need to be on the froyo 2.15.00.07.28 radio for the patch to work. So you need to flash the misc img again, then the froyo ruu to get the froyo radio. Then unlock the bootloader again, flash recovery, flash superuser, and then the forever patch. You should then be s-off. So basicly start at step 4 again.

I did not get an error while flashing the forever patch..
Another thing I noticed was hboot went from LOCKED to UNLOCKED and not like the example (RELOCKED to UNLOCKED).. Not sure if this means anything...

Not sure why the forever patch isnt working for you. Have you tried redownloading it? My only other sugestion would be to use unrevoked 3 to try to get s-off. It should work since your on froyo and have the right radio. http://unrevoked.com/recovery/.

Download that to your pc and open the program. At the top select options, custom recovery, and select the recover.img file from earlier. Boot the phone to the os and make sure usb debugging is on. Then connect the phone to the pc, and the program should do the rest.

Oh sorry open that zip with a zip manager (7zip, winzip, etc) and extract the img file from it. Or download and use this one http://dinc.does-it.net/Guide_Root_New_Hboot/recovery.img.

Dont get frustrated if unrevoked3 dosent work the first time. Sometimes it takes two or three tries to get it.

the locked/relocked difference doesnt mean anything,its just the state when i took the pic,its got nothing to do with the process.

are you sure youre on froyo? are you stock,or on a custom rom? are you on the baseband cmlusco listed above? (2.15.00.07.28)

if youre on a custom rom,try going back to stock by running the ruu,then install recovery and superuser again. it bothers me the zip is not working,its been extremely reliable so far,thats why ive advocated this method.

So i was finally able to flash forever last night. r I now have the s-off. thank you very much for your assistance last night. trying to flash hboot and radio today. I got hboot to reflash to 1.07.0000. however i can not get the radio to flash to 2.15.10.12.20. and now its stuck in lock on the hboot. will not let me run the unlock command. i get a failed (remote: not allowed) error now. any help would be appreciated. so close to the end....thanks

Now that your s-off your bootloader dosent need to be unkocked, unless you prefer flashing with fastboot. You can now flash hboots, radios, splash screens, recoveries thru hboot.

To update the radio download this file http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/2.15.10.12.20/PB31IMG.zip and place it on your sdcard in no folders. Boot to hboot and it should propmt you to press vol up to update, just like how you do an ruu.

If you do wish to be unlocked,you can submit a new identifier token and get a new unlock_code.bin. your original one is just not working because you've upgraded the hboot to a new one. You don't need to be unlocked,but it can nice to have access to the fastboot flash and fastboot boot commands.

Without an unlocked or eng hboot I prefer to install things as ruus from fastboot,since I do it a lot and find it cumbersome to move things on and off the sd card. Plus,that method does even require an sd card to be present its also got the abvantage of showing you exactly why/ where something fails if it doesn't flash successfully.

that's just one way to skin the cat,however. You can do it however your comfortable. glad you got it figured out and are s off

I'm trying to root my phone with this excellent guide but can't download the forever patch. I just get a 404. Is there anywhere else to get the patch?
