Yeah I seen over at XDA it was quite a process. I followed the Eris root thread as I almost bought an Eris but decided to just wait since my Vogue has been running android quite well for a while now.
Hey Acidbath hopefully rooting will go smoother for the incredible than for the eris. I know you guys over at xda took a lot of crap while working on root for the eris. Also I posted the extracted rom over the xda to save some people some time from extracting the rom from the ruu.

Android is Linux based. /root is the superuser. Also the lowest file level of the filesystem. If you have /, you have the power to do whatever you want.
Rooting = you can do whatever you want with a (more or less) open system. It's like turning on developer mode to give yourself unlimited lives in a game.
Jailbreaking = you can do whatever you want with a 100% closed system. It's like plugging in a Game Genie.
Thus the different names

Ok, I kinda understand. So I guess my next question is, How can I benefit from rooting my phone? With my iPod Touch all I did was install Installous and try out different apps. I don't develop software, so I don't know if that is something I would need.
All I would like to do with the phone is use Google Voice, and teather it to my laptop.

One of the most popular uses for rooting is turning your phone into a wifi hot spot(wifi tethering). Internet access everywhere you have service for your laptop. Saves you a lot of money when you no longer have to pay 50-60 bucks for a WWAN device.
Another popular use is running custom Roms. Custom roms give the user several benefits. One is when issues get identified and a fix is discovered, you can more often than not correct the issue with a custom rom before the official one is released. They also allow you to completely change the look and feel of your phone.
I like the idea of the wifi hotspot. I have read different things about that, but I also read that you could get in trouble with VZW if they find you. I won't be downloading torrents or anything on it, just surfing and email.
What is/are the chances of getting a virus, or god forbid bricking the phone?

I have ran WinMo phones with cooked rooms for 4 years now and never had a problem. If you pay attention to what the people in xda tell you, then you won't brick your phone, and as far as verizon, they will never know. Thing is you will get no support (but thats ok, because your support is now xda!)
Another benefit of cooked roms on android is that it allows you to store apps on SD. Along with mobile wifi hotspot, etc.

Does rooting for the purpose of tethering somehow mask the data stream going over the network? Seems like it would be quite simple to aggregate average smartphone data usage and pick who is tethering illegally and terminate their accounts.
I am new to android.
I am patiently waiting for the Inc. to be shipped
Anyway, I heard about term "rooting" before but didn't know benefits or what it does to the phone.
Thanks for your explanation above, I will look forward to someone roots the Inc.

I remember Gener1c Cheers on that and good to see you around!
Yeah it was Brutal over in the Eris forums wasnt it? There is always gonna be the ignorant few online so whatcha gonna do
This time will hopefully be different though....
And for everyone that wants to understand root better...I linked a good tutorial in first post.

Yes sort of. Doesn't matter all that much. I have been streaming for years without being charged. I just stay away from the torrents, and don't use it all that much. I basically use it for weekends away, airports and hotels that dont have free wifi.
At first I didn't like the tile look they gave it but once I so how they work, I think they will have a decent platform and I'm sure business users will keep them in the game.

For me though, Android is where its at.
windows mobile went the apple route...i could say "enough said"
but...it does have potential. its just i like to have TOTAL control over my device. From what MS is saying, WP7 will not give u that ability.
so...glad its been almost two years and android has done nothing but improve. I couldnt care less about winmo.
on that note DROIIIIDDD!! incredible

I was following you guys for a while in the Eris thread. I think you'll like the people here a little better.
I still love my Touch pro 2....I am so nostaligic...lol
so i manage about 6 windows mobile phones at my gig...
i never had a touch pro 2 though...my last winmo device was an omnia...i abhor winmo!
but i know your like a rom MAKER so...i could imagine u having a sort of...emotional attachment to it ay?
im not gonna lie, if android wasnt so open 'in theory' and i didnt invest so many months approaching years into it (currently researching developing for it) then i would be all over winmo. the new closed model and everything.
but...alas. I CANT! I JUST CANT!
ok...im done

"Order Status: Your order has been processed. You should receive your order within 2 - 3 business days."
Awesome

Yeah I hear ya...
I just love the design and keyboard on my Touch pro 2...
And still love working on it...although in so many ways it has kinda hit its peak...
So now in 2-3 days I will have 1 ghz Android Power with that beauty HTC Sense!
Well folks it Looks like we have Root thanks to the Founder of Modaco Pual O'Brien.....

"The current Desire root status is that I DO have root access in a method that I believe can be replicated on other devices (I have a retail T-Mo device and i've had no issues), however HTC have implemented some rather sneaky protection methods that prevent writing of data to key partitions (boot, recovery, system etc.) which prevent us from enabling custom ROMs etc.
Aside from hoping an engineering SPL (and a way to flash it!) emerges, I do have a number of approaches I plan to try that I hope will unlock the last piece of the Desire puzzle, so don't give up hope just yet... progress IS being made...."
For those who dont understand why HTC Desire/Legend effects us Droid Incredible users, essentially the HTC Desire is the essentialy the same phone, just the U.K Version....so it should be rather easy to transfer the same steps over to our Droid Incredible.
Since the have rooted the Desire pretty much to the fullest, that means they will transfer the steps over and then we'll have the Incredible set for root once it's released! That's awesome!! ... Even though I might wait a bit to root mine lol.. Like a few weeks.. But good news on progress!
