Default Screen jumps all over the place with no touch...

Major disappointment, and I haven't seen anybody else complain of this so hopefully I am the only one...

Got my Incredible, charged it, and started using it about an hour ago. About 10 minutes ago, the phone just started jumping around as if I were using the touch screen. Right now, I have it sitting flat on my desk, and the home screens are scrolling all over the place as if I am running my finger all over the touch screen.

Very, very strange. Does the same thing in apps sometimes.

Anybody have any ideas?

And for the record, I have not installed anything or done anything except set up Gmail.

Wish I could help, but once most people in this forum receive their phone, you'll have a better chance and troubleshooting

Yeah... thanks. This is my first touch phone, so I was hoping maybe someone with a touch phone (Incredible or otherwise) could shed some light.

Like I said, nobody in the reviews said anything about this, so hopefully mine was just screwing up momentarily and will start acting normal again. Or at least, hopefully mine will be the only one that has this issue.

I'll report back in a bit to update whether it keeps happening.

Have you pulled the battery? I'm a BB user for now until my Inc comes - is that even something you do with Androids?

I did that, and at first it didn't seem to do anything. Then I turned the phone off, turned it back on, did another G-sensor calibration, and it seems to be working ok for the past 10 minutes.

are you using the O.E.M. charger (the one that come in the box)

i see this all too often, if you use a cheap charger on these touch screens, it messes them up

It's not that I don't believe you, but why? I've never owned a touchscreen phone, so I have no idea what the correlation is between a cheap charger and the touchscreen going wonky.

This happened to my eris a few times. Batt pull was necessary cause all buttons locked up as well. Not a regular need to batt pull on android like on BBs. G-sensor calibration and it hasnt done it since. hope this helps.

Find this hard to believe, I've gone through 3 touch screens with no issues on OEM chargers. What is your reasoning for this?

Its not the screen, the trackpad is being activated.

I bet it is always scrolling right or left.. as in one or the other, yeah?

Yep, it would scroll mostly to the left.

Have you seen this?

Edit: Oh, but the button never seemed to actually push... it would just scroll, never select.

All you can try is some alcohol on a Q-Tip.. clean the sensor (battery out) then boot back up and see how it goes.

If that doesn't work -- I'd head to your (biggest) local store and try to make them give you one of the stocked Incredibles citing your preorder, etc as grounds for the special treatment (as in you not having to wait for mail order or Friday for 'release').

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I haven't even used the trackpad so I'm not sure why it would have started messing up. And at any rate, it hasn't messed up in awhile, so I can wait until Thursday to try for an exchange if necessary...

Regardless if it occurred, it's something that should not have, as it is either a hardware or software error (most likely software). Report it to Verizon and if you can repeat what happened to them even better.

Try a factory reset if the battery pulls and everything else people are mentioning still don't work. That would be another thing that would reset the software.. It's under settings - just forgot where exactly. Try that though.. Hope it gets worked out bud!

Just to update anybody interested, it has been acting fine for the past hour or so. So I guess I've been using it about 2.5 hours and it has had about 15-20 seconds worth of strange behavior, which mostly seems to have been fixed by recalibrating the g-sensor and cleaning the trackpad (who knows why it needed to be cleaned since it was brand new, but whatever).

I'll report back if I have any updates.

Oh, and other than that slight problem, this phone is AMAZING.

Thanks, I was having the same problem but it was an "up" motion that seemed to be detecting.

I was having things highlighted in orange but not actually getting "clicked" and I couldn't even figure out how to actually make that happen with the touch screen.

I was able to recreate that using the trackpad though, so I bet that was the issue. There were some dust particles hanging around it, so I cleaned it off and so far so good.

We'll see what happens.

Hey! You're not the only one!

Guess what, it only happens in darker areas, where you will see the buttons at the bottom light up.

I had the same problem with my first phone today, and I had it replaced at Verizon.

No problem so far. Go get it replaced!

I have been having the frigging problem now on HTC Incredible with verizon wirelss service.

These are the symptoms and it is driving me MAD
- screen jumps. or starts scrolling up and down when i am reading a page, sometimes it zooms in and out. I am not even fvcking touching the fvcking screen. I am so fvcking mad

- when i am typing a text message, the phone decides to type its OWN fcvking text message and I am not even tocuhung the screen

It started a few months agon when the android operating system was upgraded. This could be the cause but only a hunch
I have done battery pulls and factory reset but I am not doing this over and over like a fvking moron.. Who can provide an intelligent before I shove this up HTC ass?

You don't say if you've read this entire thread, or whether you've tried some of the other remedies, so I apologize if you've already done this. On my Incredible, I find that when the screen or cursor moves on its own, it's usually because the trackpad is dirty. You might not be able to see it, but something is on the lens causing this to happen. Usually, wiping the trackpad lens will fix this problem for me.

if the screen moves by itself when NOT plugged in then you have a bad/dirty trackpad/screen issue going on.

if the screen moves by itself when it IS plugged into a charger this usually means you have a bad ground at the charger port.

both issues were very common on the eris. doesnt matter what charger you use, if the charge port has a problem it will be seen.

I had the same problem where mine would scroll to the left causing the phone to scroll to the last screen if it was in home mode. It appears that the case I had it in, Seido, was warping just enough to put pressure on the screen on the left to make it scroll.

I removed the case and reset it on the phone thus stopping it from scrolling.
