Default Accidental Call Answers - Lock Issue?

I've had my Incredible for a week and love the phone. It is exactly what I hoped it would be and much more.

That being said, I have one issue that is driving me nuts. I hate belt clips/holsters and have always carried my phone in my pocket. Whenever I receive an incoming call on my incredible, the action of pulling it out of my pocket answers the call 99% of the time. I cannot screen any calls as a result...and on one occasion, while driving, I had a hard time getting the phone out of my pocket and, unbeknown to me, the caller could hear me grumbling about it, so the call was picked up while still in my pocket even.

I've tried orienting the phone differently in my pocket (upside down, right side up, screen out, screen in), but the result is always the same. I've searched and searched the forum and the internet, but cannot find a way of locking my phone so that a button needs to be pressed for call answers instead of the screen swipe. Am I the only one having this issue? Is there a workaround that I don't know about?

I have a similar problem. Most of the times, it answers my calls for me.

I haven't tried it on my incredible but when I used a lock pattern on the Eris it made me enter it before I could answer the call..Sometimes it was annoying because I would mess up the pattern and miss the calls..let me know if this is true for the incredible and if ithis helps.

The lock pattern does not have to be put in to answer the call on the Incredible. Even with it turned on you have to swipe down to accept or up to reject the call, so it wont solve your problem.

Same problem here. Thought it would have something to do with "Quiet ring on pickup" option but I was wrong. There has to be as easy solution. Anyone figure it out yet?

I also have the issue, except I am not answering. I am ignoring/sending to voicemail. Then it shows a missed call.

Happens about 10-20 times a day.

Beside this huge issue for me, the phone is in fact "Incredible"

Someone please fix this!

An app to fix this would indeed be most helpful.
As of today, my pockets have answered more calls than I have.

just posted another thread without seeing this one. I have the same problem and I really really dont like it. There are people who call me all day who I ignore, that now I have to talk to. this is unreal.. love the phone, but someone just make an app that has another step to confirm a call answer.

Call confirm settled this problem. Amazing that just 4 minutes after i posted I got notifcation in the market that call confirm now makes you confirm incoming calls and not just outgoing.

So, if you were having this problem, download call confirm.

You guys... How is your phone being answered in the pocket! This is technically, not even possible, since the screen is Capacitive Touch. I just called myself, the ONLY way to "slide-answer" the phone is to use a finger-skin contact. The cloth from your pocket cannot slide-to-unlock(answer). The only way I can see you doing, this is if you put your hand into the pocket, and your hand touches the screen. But if the phone is kept in the pocket, it should not answer.

Do this: Take the a shirt, cloth... a pant-pocket. Now completely cover your finger/hand. Then take the finger that is covered, and try to slide-to-unlock. It is not possible.

It only works by skin contact, so unless you got a hole in your pocket or your pockets are made of mesh... It is not possible for a pocketed-phone to be answered accidentally. Unless you stick you hand in the pocket and touch the screen accidentally.

Umm....to get the phone out of your pocket you have to use your hand?

But seriously I can see how this might be an issue for many....I've only had it happen a few times...with both the Eris and now my Inc....now that I've had practice, if I grab it carefully it's fine. But I do like call confirm it's actually nice just wished it worked on incoming calls.

Got me thinking. Just installed no-lock. I assume this would be even worse of a problem with that.

Grab it buy the edge?!
Also, when you keep the phone in your pocket, have the "screen-side" facing you (your thigh). So when you hand goes into your pocket, the first thing you touch is the back cover.

I haven't had this problem. I Remove the phone from my pocket without touching the screen. I grab the sides of the phone.

Yea the edge that works! I agree with the placement of the phone as I do this. The point however, is some people would like an option like Call Confirm that places another step in there so that calls aren't accidentally answered whether in your pocket or not. I don't think this is a complaint so to speak just a tweak

I have not once had an accidental answer and the only place I put my phone is my left pocket.

If you are just flat out wrapping your hand around the screen when you take it out - there won't be an app to fix it.

Yeah, this is really annoying. I have my phone in a running belt when I'm running or riding horses and it's almost impossible for me to wrangle the phone out without touching the screen. Same thing when it's in the Nexus One sleeve, it's really hard not to touch the screen when pulling it out. I really want an app to fix this.

Maybe if you had a different lock pattern it wouldn't be as much of a problem? Doesn't the lockbot app allow you to change to iphone style slide across instead of down patterns.. maybe this would help?

The reviews/feedback for lockbot are not very good, which is why I haven't tried it. EVERYTHING on my phone works well except for inadvertant answer issue. Perhaps I'll have to try it nevertheless.

I orient the phone face in, power button up while in my pocket...and I am careful not to touch the screen when pulling it out of my pocket when it rings...but it still answers about 50% of the time. I don't know...perhaps the lining of my jeans pocket is thin enough that its getting some contact from my thigh? Who knows. Its annoying though. I let let it ring now when its in my pocket and then see who called once it goes to VM.

Yes lockbot does this....it also gives you an option to add a 2nd lock (either pass-code or swipe pattern) as redundant as that might sound to some. Might help those who have this issue though.

Tongue screen side to thigh!

I have had this exact same problem! I hate it! but actually for me, putting the screen in my pocket against my thigh works. I end up touching the back cover of the phone and not the screen. silly issue right!

This has been a problem for me too and I am always very careful to grab the phone by the sides when removing it from my pocket. It almost seems like the phone is answering when I touch the volume keys as well. It's probably my biggest complaint about the phone.

Hey I also have this problem and it is so frustrating!! I've read people talking about having the phone facing your thigh but has anyone run into issues with handcent?? Often times when I get a texts, I can hear the phone making "swipe" sounds and doing different things when in fact there is no bodily contact.

On another note is the "Capacitive" screen similar to a heat sensitive touch screen?

Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I have the HTC EVO. It appears to have the same lock screen as the Hero. I carry the phone in my front pocket and it randomly answers, or declines the call...more often declining.

I carry it with the screen facing my thigh, as this protects the touchscreen from accidental damage.

As for it being impossible to have accidental input on the touchscreen without direct finger contact, I say it is quite possible.

I did as ank218 said. I took a ribbed tee shirt, and covered my hand with it. And with the fabric covered finger, I could swipe my finger with medium pressure to unlock the phone. The fabric in most denim pants is very thin (a lot thinner than a ribbed tee shirt) making input through fabric even easier.

So when the phone rings, the screen turns on. And with the pressure of it being in my pocket against my leg, the up down movement of the phone against my leg as I push my hand down into my pocket, then pulling up and out, will often be enough to provide the swiping action to answer or decline a call.

And regardless if some out there cannot puzzle out how these phones are randomly answering calls, the fact remains that it is happening to phone users frequently (myself included).

The problem is the up down swipe to unlock it. If it were a left right swipe, like the iPhone, this would not be an issue.

I tried lockbot. But when the screen is off and an incoming call turns on the screen, the lockbot lock is bypassed and the incoming call screen appears (with the red button on the right to decline and green button on left to answer). The immediate display of the incoming call screen makes it even easier to incorrectly answer the phone. It takes less contact to have the inappropriate button get pressed. When just going into your phone with the screen off, one has to unlock the lockbot (to get past the lockbot security screen) and then unlock the HTC system screen again.

I tried pandahome iPhone. It unlocks like an iPhone (left to right) as well. But when the screen is off, and an incoming call turns on the screen, the iPhone lock is bypassed and the incoming call screen appears (with the red button on the right to decline and green button on left to answer), just like the lockbot. And again, the immediate display of the incoming call screen makes it even easier to incorrectly answer the phone taking less contact to have the inappropriate button pressed. However unlike lockbot, when just going into your phone with the screen off, you just have to unlock the iPhone lock to get past the iPhone security screen. No second unlocking is required.

And here's another strange behavior for lockbot and pandahome:
You know how the screen powers off when you hold the phone to your ear during a call, and then the screen turns back on when you take the phone from your ear, so that you can "END" the call? Well, even though the Pandahome iPhone and Lockbot immediately bypass the lock screen for an incoming call, when you are done with the call and take the phone from your ear, the screen will illuminate again but you will need to unlock the phone at this point so that you can get past the security lock so that you can hit the END button. This seems strange to have to unlock your phone just to hang it up.

I've uninstalled both lockbot and pandahome unlock apps.

I'd sure like to find an iPhone type lock (left-right) that requires a swipe left or right before accepting a call. Additionally I hope the unlock app would have the logic to know that if I've already unlocked it to talk on the phone, it doesn't need to be unlocked to hang up the call.

If anyone finds an app that does it, please post the solution.

Also it would be nice if those that try an app, and it doesn't work as intended, please post to the forum that the app didn't work out and how it behaved, to help others to avoid testing the same ineffective apps.

Thanks
Brian

I have "accidentally" answered the phone once, not a big deal for me.

My issue was the accidental dial and that was fixed with the CALL CONFIRM app.

Give widgetlocker a try. I think the dev has added a feature to display the lockscreen (can be vanilla lock screen) during incoming calls as well. I haven't tried it yet, but I think then after you unlock you would see the unlocked incoming call screen (red/green buttons). He is active on the forums and seems to do a nice job, can hurt to ask him. WidgetLocker | TeslaCoil Software

OMG! same problem.

After searching and searching THIS
Easy Answer Button Free - Android app on AppBrain

has been the best solution so far for me. You pretty much set how long you must hold the "answer" button to answer.

Actually, I have the INC2 as well, and you CAN get the slider to unlock with clothes, be it your shirt wrapped around your finger or the inside of you pants pocket. I always put my phone in my pocket with the screen facing my leg and I grab it from the sides and it will either ignore or answer my calls.

I have this problem on my HTC EVO 4G. I frequently accept or reject phone calls accidentally while taking the phone out of my pocket. Super annoying. Here's what I've tried and the results:

1. Widget Locker ($2.99): A very nice app, but doesn't quite do what I want. You have to unlock the phone to see who is calling you. I use this app, but I've disabled it for incoming calls.

2. Tiny Call Confirm (Free): This is the best solution I've found for what I need. You can make it so there is a little lock button on incoming calls. You can see who is calling you before you unlock. After unlock, you still need to swipe down to accept the call. I just installed today, and it seems like it will work for me.

It would be really nice if HTC just allowed you to do a side-swipe instead of the up/down swipe. I spent a whole day and went through many install/uninstalls of apps trying to solve this problem. Being able to answer your phone when you want to seems like a pretty basic phone feature that just doesn't work well on the EVO. Other than this problem, my EVO works really well.

One more note: in response to ank218... It is definitely possible to answer the phone without touching skin directly. About 50% of my calls are either missed or accidentally answered when pulling the phone out of my pocket. Like baddbart, I put the phone in my pocket with the screen facing my leg and pull it out by grabbing the sides. Normally, the phone is upside-down in my pocket (with the power button on the bottom).

Default The Solution for HTC Incredible 2

Was installing Tiny Call Confirm, a free app from the Play Store.
I tried other apps, mainly suggested in this thread, with little success.

To those of you who did not have to wrestle with the problem: Turning the phone around, trying to grab it by the sides did not help. Perhaps capacitive sensor sensitivity varies greatly between models and individual phones. If you are blessed with one that has a sensitive display, this is very annoying. Especially if you are waiting for hours for a service provider to call you back, then you accidentally hang up.

I had struggled with this problem for almost a year, and the best solution I could initially come up with was putting my IncredibleS in a pouch. Worked well but found that I fumbled while trying to get the phone out to answer a call. The solution? I installed (tiny call confirm) from google play. Adds a horizontal lock screen that should be unlocked first before you could answer or reject your call. It's worked perfectly and solved the problem, alternatively you can try (HD fullscreen caller ID) which allows you to change how you answer/reject calls to iphone or sony style sliders.
