Default PC won't recognize the Droid Incredible

When I plug my Incredible into my PC with the USB cable, the phone charges. How do I use the Incredible as a drive so I can drag and drop music files? I downloaded HTC Sync program onto my pc but it always shows as "disconnected" even when the phone is plugged in with the USB cord. In the Incredible's Connect to PC settings, I have disk drive as the default connection type and I checked off Ask me... What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't the pc recognize the incredible as new hardware that is connected? Is there a customer service telephone number I can call for assistance?

You need to make sure that "USB debugging" is checked in your settings under "Application development".

Sometimes after checking that setting, you need to re-boot the phone or at least disconnect and re-connect it to your PC.

Pull down the Notification area at the top of your phone's screen. Then Mount the phone.

I checked off the USB Debugging and rebooted the phone. There's nothng in my notifications area that asks me to mount the phone. I don't get it. It can't be this difficult.

I don't know what Excedio was referring to either. Does anything pop up when you first plug the phone into the PC?

No. Nothing pops up. The only thing I notice is the battery icon that tells me the phone is charging. This also tells me the pc recognizes the phone through the usb cord. Or am I mistaken on that one?

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean the PC recognizes the phone, it just means that the phone is drawing power from the USB bus.

Have you tried opening HTC sink on your computer and then plugging the phone in?

EDIT: Did you mean there is a "battery icon" that pops up on your computer when you plug the phone in, or did you mean the charging light on the phone?

I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I wasn't using the original usb cord that was supplied with the phone. Once I connected with that one, I was able to see the usb option in my notifications area and select if I want to sync, or use my phone as a disk drive etc. I didn't think this would matter but obviously it does. Hopefully this will help someone else out there. Thanks for your help!

what's so special about the supplied micro usb?

will any micro usb allow charging? I was thinking about keeping the phone charging at work, since I'm in front of a computer all day.

So nothing happens on your computer when you plug the phone in? Do you get any kind of "found new hardware" notification?

OK, So once the SD card is installed and seen by the phone, can you transfer files back and forth to it? If so, what is the problem?

If you want to see the phone memory, you need to have "USB debugging" checked in your phone settings.

Also, "HTC Sync" should show up in the root directory of the SD card (but it might be on the root of the phone) you can install that on your PC to have more "automatic" syncing.

Settings/Applications/development/USB Debugging

Make sure it's checked.

You might have to unplug the phone and plug it back in again for it to take affect,

I assume you have the Incredible?

While the phone is on, press and hold the power button down for about 5 seconds and the power option menu will pop up.

Maybe. But sometimes you need to hold the power button down longer then you think. Try that, and then if it doesn't work, pull the battery and wait a few and then put it back in and restart.

Meanwhile, download and install the HTC sync I linked to before you try plugging the phone back in to the computer.

It does sound like a hardware issue, I'd take it to a VZ store and have them swap it out for you.

Defective phone?
I've been very frustrated with this lately as I can't consistently get my DINC to connect to my PC either.

1. I'm running rooted DINC with stock ROM no mods.
2. Older laptop with Vista Basic (I believe).

I've found that if I reboot my PC, then reboot my phone, then plug it in to PC with original USB cable I can usually get it to connect the way it should (USB Debugging, mount as disk drive; it then shows up in Win Explorer and I can drag and drop).

However, if I do all that, then unplug my phone and try again, 9/10 times it refuses to connect properly and show up. Very frustrating. So now I just use an SC card adapter, pull my SD card, move stuff around and reinstall it in my phone.

Try rebooting BOTH PC and phone then connecting and see what happens.

Default Driver Issue

I am also having a problem with my computer not connecting to my HTC Incredible. I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue and I don't know what to do. I have a Dell Inspiron 530S and there were issues with the drivers back when I first got the computer (over a year ago) which were fixed at that time by Dell tech support and haven't been an issue since. I go to the Dell website and look at the drivers to download/update, but I have NO idea which one to select and I'm afraid to try anything because I don't want to cause other problems. Any suggestions on what we should look for?

Another thing: when I take the memory card out of the phone and put it into the computer, it gives me the option to "import pictures." When I do that, the only pictures that transfer are ones that were made using a "paintjoy" app, but none of the photos that we took ourselves from the phone. The tech support guy said that our pictures should automatically be saved to the memory card, but they are NOT on that card. How can we make it so that they automatically go to the removable memory card? Also, how can we get the photos we've take which are on the phone memory and PUT them on the removable memory card? Is there a way?

THANKS!

my phone is doing the exact same thing.
ever since i got sense 3.0, my phone has stopped working properly and begins to freeze.
I've tried everything that has been said in the above comments but I'm still unable to connect my phone to my pc.
everytime i connect the htc incredible s to the computer via the htc micro usb chord, the charging icon in the top right hand corner of the notification bar indicated to me that the phone is charging, but no notification comes up to ask me what i want to do while the phone is connected to the computer.

Default USB connection working again..

My USB was working a few months ago and then it stopped working..now it works again! I don't recall if or what I might have installed to break it (big assumption there that ~I~ broke it), but I'm glad it works. Here's what seems to have happened. Initially I had the HTC USB drivers as well as a motorola USB driver on my XP sp3 laptop and original factory stuff on the phone, using a non-original non-HTC USB cable which has always worked. (...so I think the rumors are wrong about needing an original HTC cable). It worked just fine..for about a year. A few weeks ago it suddenly stopped working. When I connected, my phone showed that it was connected using the Disk drive connection type and my XP's FileManager showed that it connected and assigned drive letters to the internal storages (both phone storage and SDHC) but I couldn't get access to the drives or see any files. When I tried to click on the drive letters in the treeview XP would give me a message that no device was connected. Then I tried installing the Android SDK and Google USB drivers to try to fix it. The Android SDK came along with the Google USB driver as an extras (but you can get the Google USB stuff separate if you look around). I hacked the android_winusb.inf file with the necessary HTC Incredible ids as explained in the Flexjunk link, have it set to use USB debugging on my phone, tried rebooting things, tried going to another phone which worked on another pc etc. Nothing worked on my laptop. For like a week my efforts didn't fix anything..and i reluctantly used my email to transfer instead. Now as of this morning it suddenly works again...must be the magic of patience! I can connect to my phone and get access to files via USB. I've not changed anything over night. I never use auto updates on my XP for security paranoia reasons so I know it wasn't due to any changes on my laptop. I did get the latest broadcasted Android OS update last night on my phone (Android Version: 2.3.4 Build Number: 4.06.605.3)...so I'm assuming (seems appropriate this time) that the update fixed something. I know this may not help everybody with the general issue but it might shed some light on some people's issues if they've tried the same things I did.

I have a stock incredible and keep getting an error saying that sync is unable to mount/unmount sd card (1020) I have checked and the phone says card is mounted. USB Debugging is checked. What am I not seeing/doing?

Thanks

Found a solution which worked for me!

Well, my problem was that when I connect my HTC Incredible S on my XP SP3 PC, a "USB device not recognised" error was generated. Whereas in my Windows 7 Ultimate laptop, this error was not even shown. It was like my laptop wasn't even detecting my Incredible S. I tried other cables, other PCs, laptops but nothing worked. Then I did following steps:

(I would like to tell my Firmware is ICS)
1. I restored Factory Settings.
2. Fortunately, I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed in my PC alongside XP, so I connected my Incredible S in Ubuntu.
3. After 3 seconds, Ubuntu asked what to do with the connected device, and the USB icon was showing on my cell! This proved that the error was not in the Phone, but in the OS.
4. I then connected phone in XP, and it also started working.
