Ever since changing my preferred network to CDMA auto my phone's battery life shot up to an up time of about 16hrs and awake time of about 4hrs at 50% on a single charge.
This doesn't mean a thing. Take a video of you showing that, then clicking Usage and showing us the "Time unplugged" too. Otherwise this is meaningless since you can have it plugged in during this time / part of this time.
Brothers and Sisters of androidforums, I hereby declare this post of thanks to necosino. Let it be known today that he has answered my question with great promptness and accuracy.
Not to mention it's already on CDMA auto by default.
That's not true. #*#*4636*#*# and check it for yourself. Mine was set to GSM (prl). After changing it, my battery time improved as well. Not conjecture, fact.

Phone starts out as CDMA, when you cause the force close it causes it to go to GSM, then you have to change it back to CDMA. People have over-ripe imaginations. ...and yes I've done this. It did nothing for my battery life whatever.

I noticed this as well. Ah first I thought I thought "hey, mine's set the wrong way!" but that was only after the force close, which had reset it. No battery gains, sadly.

It is true. Neither conjecture nor fact, just misunderstanding.
It is set to CDMA by default. When you go into the radio menu and it force closes, it just happens to start on the GSM option. Mine, yours, and everybody else's started by default on CDMA.
So there is no battery improvements, signal strength improvements, or any other effect because literally nothing is being changed.
Now what you mentioned about dialing 778, THAT can indeed improve call quality. In some locations. For other locations, it can cause entire loss of signal. Just have to try that one for yourself. YMMV.

Thanks. There really should be a field called "Time Until Battery Discharge" or something like that. Something that shows how much time (hr/min/sec) of how much battery life is left.

Completely agree!!
Be careful people, you need to be in an area that supports whatever change you make otherwise you will hose your reception completely.

I was one of the first people to post this tip on here, and while I agree with what you've said here, I disagree that it does nothing (in my case).
After reading a lot of "it does nothing" replies, I decided to reboot without making the change. And what I noticed, on my phone, which no one here can dispute is the following....
In my house where I get at least 3 bars of signal all the time, without the change my Time Without Signal number would be quite high (~40%). After the change, in the same spot, my Time Without Signal remains at 0%.
So, until someone explains that, I'll stay soundly on the "it helps some people" side of the house.
And besides, it takes maybe 30 seconds to do this after each reboot (which don't happen that often).

I'll try this out. However, I still stand by the philosophy that I should not have to install an APP/Widget just to get my phone to do basic functionality.

Well, the same thing can be achieved by turning on airplane mode and turning it back off.
Now why either of these things affect time without signal, I have no idea.
EDIT: And much like half the other indicators on the phone, I think Time Without Signal doesn't really indicate anything. I also have a high TWS in my house, and my phone always sits at my desk. Yet I can make hour long calls at my desk and never drop a one. If I really have no signal 40% of the time, then surely I should be dropping those calls.

What other phone has this "basic functionality"? Apps are there to make the phone do what you want. Give me a vanilla phone any day that I can build the way I want it without it clogged with what someone else thinks is "basic functionality".

I am experiencing the same thing. I did this yesterday and my battery life is considerably better.
