Lightbulb DIY - Make a front facing DINC camera for video chat

Has anyone rigged up a device to convert the back camera into a front facing camera? I may experiment with this at some point. In the past I have simply sat in front of a mirror and pointed the camera into the mirror, this way I don't need to flip the phone back and forth to video chat.

However, I am envisioning a device (perhaps made of plastic or cardboard... business cards might even work) with angled mirrors on it, that can sit on top of the phone. One mirror would be facing the camera, the other would be facing you. The second mirror would mirror your image to the mirror facing the camera. Just a thought, I haven't played with this, so the image may be upside down, requiring another mirror. Attached is a paint mock up. I'll post my results when I get around to building one. I encourage others to try and improve upon a design. Could be a cool little project.

They're great to have until you forget it's on... I would definitely be interested though, it would be pretty cool and there's plenty of room on both sides of the phone for a clip to hold it in place.

You might just be on to something. If I weren't so lethargic I would actually think about considering to con someone into making a prototype..

I suppose you could just sit in front of a mirror if you wanted to video chat...

It's funny that this thread popped up, last weak as I was looking at my son's blu tooth low profile adapter for his laptop which connects to USB I thought to myself that someone with the know how can probably come up with a micro USB front facing camera for the incredible. If done right that would be awesome and probably a money maker.

I believe the current two mirror design would show up as upside down. You could just turn your phone upside down to correct it, but then the other person would be upside down. So you'd have to get TWO phones and turn them both upside down, with these on.

wish there was an adapter from usb to the DInc's connection. I wonder if a rooted phone could add the drivers for the PS3 cam. I use it on my laptop for skype. I would really like some sort of vid chat on my DInc.

I do not believe a USB camera would work, even if there were drivers. I don't think the Incredible has the required hardware to act as a USB Host.

That's what I was told when I was inquiring about a microUSB gamepad for playing my SNES emulator on my Incredible.

How does everyone feel about this thread getting moved to the tips section. All the froyo threads will most likely kick it to page 2 here. Gonna go ahead and move it, if there are any objections then just pm me or one of the other incredible guides.

To alleviate the upside down image you could make something that clipped to the side instead of the top....

Just a thought.

I have a 9 inch TV that would probably work fine to Skype and not have to keep turning the camera around. I just got the 2.2 update 2 hrs ago so need to see if the video out quality improved.

Since you already moved it - good idea (at least it has a better chance of remaining on the 1st page). I think Accessories would also have been a good place for this.

great response. It confuses the shit out of me to even think about it, but im assuming that you have, and its accurate.

Default ISnap Mirrors

I'm using the ISnap mirrors on my Motorola Droid so I can have a front facing camera using the back camera of my phone.

It sounds like a good idea

something would probably have to be inserted between the "clip" and the DINC itself...that way the DINC would not be scratched, the mechanism would stay in place, and make it easy to slide the device on an off....maybe a thin piece of foam?

Wouldn't the video out on the Incredible put the image you're watching on a TV so you could point the cam at yourself and watch the other person on TV?

Default A few points

1) Mirrors would have to be at 45 degrees.
2) Yes, you would be upside down.
3) If you make them to the side rather than the top, you will be flipped left/right rather than up/down. more acceptable.
4) May not be a big issue. Theoretically, the image could be corrected in software. (Practically though?)
5) Auto focus?
6) Wifi camera a possibility?
7) I don't think Bluetooth has the bandwidth (depending on acceptable picture quality).

That's all I have for now.

I don't think. When I rotate my phone, the pic rotates so that UP is always UP.
I've been using Tango lately and it has an issue where my image shows upside down on the other persons phone (generally my son's LG Optimus). If he rotates his phone, I'm still upside down...and then he looks upside down on my phone.

So.,flipping your phone would invert the image of you the other person sees, but the image of the other person on your phone should still look upside up.

If you put the mirrors around the side of the phone rather than over the top then the worst is that the image is a mirror-image or left-right.

Default just part of the idea

I was thinking that it would be great if someone created something like this. I was thinking that it could be something small and you could plug it into your headphone jack and you would take pictures that way or if it can't transfer the picture to the phone (or video) that way then it could have a cord plugging into your charging port cuz that can be used to transfer info. And if your headphone jack is at the bottom it could extend out like one of those old radio antennas and bend any which way you need it to. Just a thought.
