How I reset and restored my Incredible
This was done on an HTC Incredible running Froyo. Iím not sure I would call this a guide. It just lists the steps I took although itís written as a step by step.
Resetting and restoring phone using MyBackup Pro:
Before doing the Reset:
Save you home screen layout. Delete any layouts you wonít need as this takes forever to restore.
Run Backup Assistant
Run HTC Sync to sync contacts and calendar
If you are using Quick Profiles Ė Export them to SD card. MyBackup (Pro) backs up and restores these so this step may not be necessary. This is a good time to reorganize the files on the card and get rid of folders/files you wonít need Ė Folders from unneeded apps for example.
Run MyBackup (Pro) and backup Apps and Settings (All)
Run SMS backup to backup your messages to Gmail (Optional)
Make a list of Apps you want to restore. This makes it easier when you restore your apps to pick them as you go.
Connect phone to PC in Disk Mode and copy your SD card and internal Storage to your PC. (I formatted both after the reset). (Optional)
Copy the MyBackup (Pro) APK to your PC so you can install it back to the phone via HTC Sync.
After the Reset:
Go through the initial setup.
Configure WiFi (Optional)
Run Backup Assistant (Optional as contacts will be restored by MyBackup (Pro))
I set Debug Mode in ÖÖ.
I turned EVRC-B for better sound quality.
If you have the 2.2 update, anytime you connect the phone to the PC it will open a Browser window with Verizon nagware about V Cast Media Manager. You can disable that by doing the following:
Type Password 000000 (that's 6 zeros)
Hit Feature Settings
Choose CD ROM
Hit menu, commit modifications (it will say no item changed)
Format SD and Internal Storage cards (optional) (I did this just to make them clean.)
Connect phone to PC in Disk Mode and copy files back to both cards.
Reboot Phone Ė May not be necessary but may clear cache.
Reinstall MyBackup (Pro). If youíre using the free version just install it from the Market. If you bought the Pro version use HTC Sync to reinstall it.
Set Phone to Airplane Mode (optional but you shouldnít get any interruptions during the restore)
Restore Settings. This took about an hour. Most of the time was on Contacts and HTC Home settings. I have 350+ contacts and didnít clean my HTC Home Scenes (it restored 449 items). I had about 7 different custom scenes saved.
Verify Contacts and Calendar entries.
If you use Quick Profiles, you will need to install it before restoring the backed up settings in the restore settings step.
Restore Apps from the list you made before the reset. Youíll have to click Install and Done for each one.
Unfortunately, MyBackup Pro does not provide an App Restore Log. It should also handle the automation of the installs. May be tough to code though.
Reboot. May not be needed but always good to do.
Go through your Home Screens and verify each Icon and Widget.
Check to see what Icons are the generic Android icons; these apps didnít restore or were not chosen. Widget icons will probably say something like ďProblem loading gadgetĒ. Just delete and recreate the Widget.
Configure each app if MyBackup (Pro) didnít restore app settings.
If you use Battery Left you will probably want to recalibrate.
App settings that MBP didnít save:
HANDCENT (Handcent needs to provide exporting of settings)
Craigsnotica & BuzzBox
MBP restored all my contacts as Google contacts instead of phone contacts as they originally were. When I syncíd with Outlook I ended up with Duplicate entries for everyone in my address book. Iím not sure if Iím just going to link the duplicates or clean out the Google contacts.
PC Sync Calendar Entries (Outlook) duplicated themselves during a second sync using HTC Sync.
I setup my 7 home screens and then saved them to a new scheme. After powering the phone off to charge it overnight all 7 screens were blank when I powered it back on. I had to re-restore the home settings and rebuild the screens. That may have been my user error. I had 2 unsaved schemes (donít know how that is possible though) and may have saved the wrong one.
All told the reset and restore process took me about 5-6 hours but I was also taking notes as I went. Itís all about validation right? J
Iím sure this process can be cleaner but I donít know if I want to go through it again anytime soon.
