Default Freezing and Locking up

Is there a way that I can troubleshoot why my phone seems to be locking up and freezing on me. I have not been able to put my finger on any common factors to this but it is becoming annoying especially when it locks up during the night. Is there any logs I can look at or a utility that can be run to see if something is bad like a package that has been installed or something. Thanks for any help.

Watchdog helps identify apps that tie up unnecessary cpu. It helped me. Also, I've learned, and you probably already learned that having several apps in memory actuallly seems to make android work faster and better.
