Sideload Wonder Machine: How to use it
Alright, so if you guys are interested in sideloading apps, you know by now that AT&T has locked that option out, so we are forced to use the Sideload Wonder Machine. And I got it to work. My first app to install: z4Root. I believe that it worked, but I'll edit this post with results.
Anyways, here is how to get Sideload Wonder Machine to work:
First, go HERE and install HTC Sync. You don't need this for anything but the ADB drivers, so don't use it after you get it fully installed. (Sidenote - during the installation of HTC Sync, it prompted me to stop my anti-virus software to continue, but I didn't and nothing bad happened so just leave it on.)
ALSO, make sure that you have the latest version of MS .NET framework!
Second, get Sideload Wonder Machine. You can find it at Android Central | Android Forums, News, and Help But you will need to be a member there to get the file for download. Follow the instructions in the post about that as well.
Third, plug your phone in and set it to debugging mode. You can do this by this: menu>Settings>Applications>Development
Then, change the setting for the phone to CHARGE ONLY!!!
Fourth, open Sideload Wonder Machine. Then choose the APK you want to install. Click install. When the window pops up you should see something about your phone and below that something to the effect of "Success". If not, take a screen-shot and post it here to I can take a look.
Matt
EDIT: Z4ROOT ISN'T WORKING FOR THE INSPIRE FOR TEMP ROOT OR PERMA ROOT! SORRY FOR THOSE WITH HIGH HOPES, BUT THE APP CLOSES OUT BACK TO THE APP DRAWER BUT NO SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS.

Thanks for that write up. I wanted to add that you may also need to update your .net framework as well. I got all the way in to SWM until I got the error saying I needed a newer version of .net. I downloaded the latest from MS and then I was golden.

Very nice...
I'm in the process of rooting my Inspire using Android Terminal Emulator, and it is quite a process for someone who hasn't done this before. For me, its like z4Root on Jedi mode. And my helper isn't helping, so I'm pretty much lost on it.
Sideload Wonder Machine allows you to install non market apps onto your phone without having to root or anything. Since getting the Inspire, I could no longer get iheartradio as it was only for download from their website directly. AT&T blocked the install as they're so awesome!.... So I downloaded the apk from their site, transferred it to my pc and installed it with SWM! And it works perfectly.

I finally got this working, on a Mac though, last night. Definitely challenging but worth it because I prefer the stock email app to the Sense version.
I don't know how you could possibly do that, it's not in the market for me and I'm in the US. I was pretty sure iheart only had market downloads for Sprint or something and everyone else had to go to iheart directly. I downloaded it from iheart, used Astro to try and install and always got the AT&T error message saying they blocked it. I don't know how you did it but I'm sure everyone here would love to know how you did.
I just looked im the android market on my phone by searching "iheartradio" and 2 came up. One that says verizon by it and the other says 1.5 , the 1.5 is the one i have installed and never have issues with it. I had it on my captivate, dell streak and now inspire, so its always in my apps on the market. I do use app brain also as a backup. I am in the US also, Texas.

I understand now, that's the older version. If it works, great! I wanted the newest version and could only get it from iheart.com.
is there any way to get something directly on the phone? like i've been downloading apks on my computer and sideload machine thing works like a charm but can i get it on my phone so i can just download apk's on my phone and install them on my phone?

That is the reason that we are using SWM. at&t locks the option to have Non-Market apps.
You guys are doing a great service. I wanted you to know. I have the Aria now and I downloaded the tether software, which I LOVE. I am getting the Inspire tomorrow for the better camera and more internal memory. I do have a question though.. I will post it in next thread, so that you can Quote it... BRB!
OK here is the question... I was told that since I have unlimited internet (thank GOD I did that years ago) that the "HOT SPOT" isn't going to work for me. This "HOTSPOT" would make tethering useless. But has anyone else run into issues with this? And I am not "Jargon Friendly", so I am assuming that "SIDELOAD" is the trick of putting your phone in airplane mode, then turning on WIFI, so that the phone will not use or recognize the AT&T network? I did this originally with the Tilt2 and the Aria, to get downloads that AT&T stopped. For things like PDANet, etc. I want to be prepared for the new phone so I am going to buy a new PC just to work on the HTC SYNC thing. I have had issues in the past where I have had to delete then reload that software to make things work.

I've never experimented with this option. I would ask this in the help forum for the Inspire or one of the main threads on AF. I would love to help but I think that the knowledge base of posters in this particular thread are not going to be able to help you here.
IMO, just use tethering. Hotspot is most likely going to cost money.

Hi I just installed SWM and I tried to install some live wallpapers just to experiment around. The program claims it was successful, but I still can't find the wallpapers. Was their an error or are the wallpapers somewhere else? Thanks.
*EDIT*
Nevermind, I just restarted my phone and it works! Thanks so much for this.

being the New-Bee in this Android speak, I want to say thanks for the positive ways that people have corrected my postings.
I would also like to say that I tried, with success the "Airplane Mode" trick and it worked. Here is how I downloaded PDA-Net, so I can use my laptop on my with my phones internet for a bigger screen experience.
1-Start with a fresh boot to both PC and Phone. This isn't required but it cant hurt.
2-Download the PDA-Net software for the PC.
3-Go to your system Settings/Wireless & networks, and turn off the Bluetooth, WIFI and Mobile networks.
4-Turn on Airplane Mode.
5-Turn back on WiFi
6-Open which ever App Market you like.
7-Now you should be able to download any app that wasn't available for download before, like PDA-Net.
8-Download PDA-Net
9-Run App on phone.
10-Run Software on PC
11-Connect Phone to PC with USB cable.
12-Open the PDA-Net icon on system tray of PC
13-Choose: CONNECT INTERNET
14-TA-DA you are now surfing the internet using the AT&T Phone network with your PC.
To test to make sure it is going right... Try and do something that can only be done on the internet. I use the "Internet Backgammon" on my PC to do this. If it connects and you are playing then you are connected.
Also another Quick tip.... If you have HTC SYNC on your computer take it off, unless you need it. It will cause you to have to do 2-3 other steps to connect the PC to the internet. And unless you live with its sync'ing stuff you don't need it anyway. I use another computer that has a dedicated Internet line for syncing my phone with HTC, and just use Google/Facebook/Flicker/APP Market to sync everything else on the fly. And I put PDA-Net on 3 Laptops so they are 100% mobile with internet.
Now if I can just figure out how to get rid of bloat-ware and not have to Root I will go from Golden to Platinum....LOL

2 things: 1.) random post in a thread that has nothing to do with the portable hotspot feature. 2.) this was discovered when the inspire was first released. check thread Tethering without root or tethering plan

Not playing junior monitor and those posts are from feb 22, shockingly enough the thread I linked too was feb 26. The ones from april are discussing an app for tethering that is not available in the market and would have to be sideloaded or using the method discussed in post 30 to get it to work.
