Default Questions about sd

Hi I'm new here, sorry if this question has already been answered elsewhere, basically I recently got my s4 and was planning to use the same sd card from my previous galaxy mini and mainly I was wondering if I would have to format it or if it will just work off the bat in my new phone? I have a lot of data on it which I don't want to lose and my old mini is now broken which makes backing the data up harder.

It should probably work, however to be safe I'd try and get an sd card reader and back it up on your computer, or a friend's computer, this will also allow you to then format the card for the phone to save any possible issues :-)
