Default KitKat - should I update...and how?

Hi

I'm on 4.3 currently, rooted, set up as I like it. All the teething issues I had are now gone.

However today the dreaded Internet Connection Unstable bug is kicking my ass! So much so I think I want to upgrade....however I have been seeing a lot of reports of a battery drain issue.

My main concern is I dont want to update to find a myriad of other bugs which restrict my phone, so question is, general consensus - safe to upgrade, or wait?

Been on KitKat 4.4.2 for 3 months with no problems.

As you are rooted, you could either flash a pre rooted KitKat ROM for your model of phone or flash a stock Samsung KitKat firmware for your phone and re-root.

Hi,

Do you happen to have a download link for KitKat on the international I9505? I'm having a brainfart with Google!

Never used Nandroid before, but I'll google that myself

You can only revert back to 4.3 if you have the non Knox'd bootloader... MH1 or prior.

DjeMBeY has both full and super slim, pre rooted KitKat ROMs for old and new bootloaders...

I feel a little out of depth here with some of the terminology (even in the dummies guide!) so I'll either leave it or need to learn!

Odexed, Knox 0x1, etc...all means pretty much nothing to me currently....and I'd rather go into this knowing what is what!

Is there a dummies guide for super dummies? :-P

So basically my Knox counter has already been tripped, so my warranty is at risk (which is weird as I just got it back from a warranty repair )

So...does this mean I can or cant upgrade my firmware?

I found out what (de)odexed means also

As per my previous link, you tripped the Knox warranty by rooting and installing a custom recovery.

No. Since you have the new Knox bootloader and your Knox counter is tripped, then you can install whatever you want.

Ok, great.

So I have established that my knox flag has already been tripped, but I can still load a custom ROM onto my phone in the way of kitkat.

As my Know flag has been tripped, does this mean my nandroid backup wont work should I need to restore?

Just 2 other things:

I assume when I load kitkat on, I will need to reinstall all my apps etc...as in it will all be back to default. What is the fastest/safest way to get all my settings back on? I heard using Titanium Backup Pro (which I have) is not wise when doing a major firmware change?

Also, with the debloated version, is there a full list of stuff that is taken out, cant seem to find one?

Ok, found the list of apps removed.

Having scrolled down a bit more, I'm getting more and more confused as to which firmware I should be downloading, there's so many! And which set of instructions to follow?!

Can you help me make sure I'm putting the right one in the right way for my phone??

Thanks in advance.

Not particularly helpful or useful gsfrider, but still.
KitKat had not caused any issues to any of the three SGS4's and their owners I know. One of which was my old SGS4. All updated OTA and did nothing an ordinary average user would do.

I think if your still having issues you should post a new thread, explaining what model SGS4 you have, how you updated it to 4.4.2 and what issues you are having. It could be a few things ranging from a rogue app not yet updated for KitKat or a "dirty" Install causing clashes with previous Jelly Bean data, all of which are quite easily solveable.

Back on Topic.

To the OP, if you follow any of Ironass' excellent "Dummies Guides", just follow the instructions to the letter, you'll not go far wrong. If you want to keep Root and have a fast 4.4.2 ROM then I too would recommend a DjeMBeY version. PM me if you like. I'll get you up and running.

Thanks Dyno

I'm ok at following instructions, and the guides are good except they contain multiple guides and I'm not sure which one to follow.

I just need someone to tell me what information they need from me about my S4, and then point me to the exact guide I need to follow

I promise you I'm not being lazy, I have read every page that has been linked, and then some...I think I'm just getting confused between information on each page etc.

I'm pleased for those people who have done the update and had no problems with it, I would appreciate any help that gets my phone working normally as Samsung can't offer any feasible solutions, thanks

Hang on, just tapping into my psychic powers now.....

Function ESP_Connect
ESP.server=spiritualunderworld.com
ESP.login="ColinFry"
ESP.password="BogusGit"
do while not ESP.connected
ESP.connect
if ESP.timeout then

if ESP.connected then
goto tescos to do the lottery
else
print "Error 404. The spiritual world is currently under maintenance"

End Function

Bah! I just got a 404 error!
I'm just not getting it today. I'll have to start eating more kelp.

Perhaps some sort of clue as to what problems your experiencing may be a start?
If this information is top secret, then all my extremely murky crystal ball is just telling me today is to factory reset the Mother Hubbard.

The problems I'm experiencing are as follows
All apps close upon opening them
Phone constantly freezes
Blue tooth keeps switching itself on & off constantly
As I type the phone alters what I type with ineligible words that I have to correct
I can't access packet data at all
I alter settings to my preferences only to have the phone alter them to some completely different

Did you upgrade to 4.4.2, or did it have 4.4.2 out of the box?
I suspect it was through an upgrade, so what version firmware were you previously on, and how did you upgrade to 4.4.2? Was it OTA or through a flash?
Have you tried a factory reset?

Ignoring that sarcastic remark, how exactly did you perform the factory reset? through the menus, or via recovery?
have you also tried formatting entire internal SD card with the reset (back everything up first)

Thread is getting a tad messy, maybe if I compile a single post with all the questions and fact I have to hand this will be clearer!

My Phone:

S4 I9505
*#1234# details:
AP: I9505XXUENA4
CP: I9505XXUENA4
CSC: I9505YXXENA5

SETTINGS > ABOUT DEVICE
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband Version: I9505XXUENA4
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-2082040 / se.infra@R0210-06 #1
Build Number: JSS15J.I9505XXEUNA4
SE for Android Status: Enforcing SEPF_GT-I9505_4_3_0021
Secure Boot Status: Samsung

1. Based on the above, is I9505XXUBMH1-PRE-ROOTED-DEODEX-SuperSlim.zip suitable?

2. How do I know which install method to follow - Odin Flash or Recovery Mode install? Basically I dont know if I have a Custom Recovery already installed.

3. As the DjeMBeY ROM is pre-rooted, can I just re-apply my SuperSU Pro Key to relicense it?

4. Will all my data (games, any media held on internal memory, rinbgtones, wallpaper, apps etc be lost or can this install without touching those?

5. Anything else I should know?

MH1 is the last knox-free version of 4.3. It isn't 4.4

As you are on 4.3, to go to 4.4 it's pretty much essential to do a factory reset, or you will almost certainly run into problems sooner or later.
If you want to go over to KK then you may as well use This one

with djembey, if it says CWM in the filename, then it means just that...flash via CWM.
but rule of thumb, if you download a zip use CWM, if you download a .tar or .md5, then use Odin

If you have paid for SuperSu then I would think it would just be downloading the pro key off the play store (I dont know for sure with this as I've never purchased it, but this is the case for Titanium Backup)

Factory reset will be a must so you will have to set everything back up.
I take it you have Titanium Backup, so its a case of
1. Titanium backup your current USER apps
2. perform a current CWM backup
3. backup any personal files in internal SD card just in case
4. factory reset
5. Personally, I would also wipe internal sd card (this and (4.) can both be done in PhilZ)
6. flash NC9 modem through Odin from here.. As you are on new bootloader, then flash moden+lte. I would also flash the NC9 bootloader too. (I dont have a link for this as yet)
7. flash Djembey NC9 through recovery
8. boot up into wizard and set up your google account etc.
9. download TB from playstore
10. restore your USER (NOT SYSTEM) apps in TB
11. set up all your homescreens and settings etc.

2. a CWM backup is a backup performed through recovery, otherwise known as a nandroid backup
5. as you are rooted, you must have some sort of custom recovery installed. Philz is an hugely extended version of CWM recovery. See this thread. Download from here
6. You can only flash modems (GSM and LTE) and bootloaders through Odin. The bootloader is what has caused all the furore with knox. Most people try to stay on the old bootloader, but once you are on the new bootloader (as you are on post MH1, then you already are) then there is no going back, you cannot downgrade.

All your questions begs the question, how exactly did you root your device?

Haha, I knew that question was coming!

Basically, I bought the S4 as a standalone phone on 4.2.2. IIRC, I rooted that via Recovery. I had the battery warping issue, which also fried some internals. When I got it back from warranty, Samsung had stuck the stock 4.3 on my phone. I rooted that by using a file I found off some guide and Odin - that was it. Done in literally a few mins.

None of this bootloader, odex, zipaligned, modem flashing stuff, hence why I was in for such a big shock...I assumed going to KK was going to be just as easy!

Thank you for sticking with me.

As you are rooted, then I would flash the latest PhilZ (philz_touch_6.25.4-jflte.zip)
if you have problems flashing this in your existing recovery then download the .tar version and flash with odin.

This will give you the best recovery available to you, from where you can perform all your flashing/wiping/resetting needs.

Hmm.

Ok, stuck on the PhilZ bit. Seems I have CWM Recovery, didnt even realise before.

I boot into CWM Recovery and do Apply Update via ExternalStorage, but it fails with something like "Failed to verify whole-file signature" and reboots.

I downloaded the tar file for Odin, and it seems stuck. Phone is in Download mode, Odin is stuck on:

<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> philz_touch_6.25.4-jflte.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<ID:0/007> Odin v.3 engine (ID:7)..
<ID:0/007> File analysis..
<ID:0/007> SetupConnection..

Been there for a while now.

What do you think I should do?

Never mind, just unplugged and started again, passed this time.

1. Uninstall Kies
2. Install Samsung USB drivers only (v1.5.42.0)
3. power off the device fully
4. enter download mode: press power until you feel it vibrate, then press VOL-DOWN immediately. Press VOL-UP then to confirm
5. Start Odin
6. If using 3.09, browse for the .md5 file by clicking the AP button. Previous versions, click the PDA button
7. connect handset with genuine usb cable
8. wait for COM port in Odin to go blue (3.09) or yellow (pre 3.09). On very first connect, wait for the drivers to install, then exit+restart Odin again and go to point 6.
9. click the start button to flash

Hi all

Good news, sat up all night re-setting up my phone after successfully flashing Philz, NC9 modem + wififix, NC9 ROM and restoring most of my User settings.

All looking good!

Only a couple of twiddly bits left which I hope someone can tell me how to solve.

1. SMS Messages - I input all of my Samsung & Google account details which restored a lot of stuff, and TB restore did pretty much everything else...however I cant get my SMS messages back?

Restore within TB doesnt work. I;m sure Google or Samsung back these up though - question is, how do I get to restore them?

2. Same as above but with previously joined Wifi networks.

Aside from that...all good!

It might be a good idea, rather than clutter up hongman's thread, to start a thread of your own on here gsfrider. That way the, "wise men", on here, such as Hawker, can talk you through trying to sort your phone out.

In your first post it would be helpful if you could answer the following stock questions regarding your phone and firmware so that we all know what we are dealing with...

Quote:

Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following question/s will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1 Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S4 that you have and which Android version you are on.

#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

Thanks. The above helps us to help you and hopefully someone will be able to reply to you shortly.

For more information, see, 23 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

(Tip: You can go to the green bar at the top of this forum and click on, "User CP", which will take you to your User Control Panel and then select, "Edit your details", under the heading, "Your profile", on the left hand side. Here you can fill in your model and firmware under, "Current devices", in, "Additional Information". This ensures that your device details are shown under your user name on the left, in every post you make. You can update this as often as you like and will help other users immediately identify your current phone and firmware details.)
Then could you please list again the problems you are experiencing and the steps that you have taken to remedy these problems.

Last but not least, could you run your phone in Safe Mode for awhile and check if these problems still occur for you as this may narrow down the suggestions and solutions. See #1.1 of Update Problems - Dummies Guide for details on how to get into Safe Mode.
