Default Serial number not showing up in first step of rooting?

I'm pretty much in the first step of rooting my phone with the sticky guide. I've rooted a few phones and am fairly comfortable with it but I must be doing something wrong. In the beginning of the adb setup when I type in "adb devices" it says "list of adb devices", but nothing else. The serial number doesn't show. Can someone let me know what I'm doing wrong here?

You posted in the HTC One root thread so I assume you have an M7_UL. I had probably the same problem, when I tried to communicate with my device via adb. The problem was I needed universal drivers that work with my PC running Windows 8.1; after that it all went without incident.

What PC OS do you have?

Drivers, different USB port or cable, check USB debugging enabled. It's likely to be one of those things.
