Default stuck on boot screen - HTC One X

Hi, i'm new to rooting and rom flashing, i rooted my htc one x and installed superuser and that was all fine everything worked as it should, no problems. Then i flashed the viperx rom for the htc one x, i copied the boot.img into the platform tools folder and i copied the rom zip into my root memory. i then followed instructions on teamandroid to use fastboot to get it on my phone, i then went into clockwork recovery and cleared cache, i then installed the rom, selecting no kernel and then selecting wipe all data, it then installed and said flash successful and rebooted, then it stayed on the boot screen for ten minutes, so i looked for forums and found a lot of people had a similar problem, so i've cleared the cache and davik cache i think it's called, i've factory reset and wiped all data and rebooted and still nothing, any help would be much appreciated.

When you restored your backup, did you reflash your original boot.img?

Do you know which version of Viper it was you installed? Also, what was your phone on before the flash, JellyBean or ICS?

yeah i reflashed and said it was successful again EDIT by boot.img do you mean recopy it or reflash it in the recovery? , i installed the latest version and htc was JB before rooting, also, i just used the 'fastboot erase cache' command prompt and that got me to the lockscreen however once i unlocked the phone to the launcher it then said tweaks unable to load and rebooted to my htc boot screen (with viper animation) would you recommend i use the 'fastboot clean cache' command promt

You can't reflash the boot.img in recovery, you have to do it manually via fastboot. Because CWM or TWRP can't write a boot.img, when you restore a backup, you have to reflash the boot.img of the backup using fastboot commands.

Are you sure the ROM download isn't corrupt somehow? Have you tried downloading the zip again and trying with the new download?

Also, can you link me to the thread you've downloaded from please?

You can mount it as USB storage via recovery. Connect it to the PC, head to the mounts and storage menu in recovery and select mount USB storage and it should appear as a drive on your PC.

Ok, what you've linked to is an older version of Viper which isn't compatible with your firmware. With the official JB update, HTC altered the firmware so only certain ROMS work.

Here's the Viper you want to download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087443

Which recovery are you using? I'd recommend upgrading to a newer version such as TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622925

Forget that teamandroid site btw, it doesn't look like it's been updated for a while.

NPs

From the downloads section, any of the top 4 will do, they're the same file, just mirrored to save the devs bandwidth.

Head to this page: Techerrata Downloads - Browsing endeavoru

Download 2.4.1.0 and rename it to recovery.img

You know where you flash the boot.img? You'll need to do the same with the recovery.img, but using the command:

Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
It will overwrite the old recovery, no need to delete anything.

Once done, head to recovery via hboot, then to mounts and storage, mount USB and your phone should appear as a disk drive for you to copy stuff too.

the recovery is flashed and works (a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the other one too) just waiting for the rom to download now, once it's finished do i copy the romzip into my root storage then go back to the downloaded romzip and extract the boot.img put it in the same folder as the recovery.img, then flash it (what command)?

Yep, just do it the same way as you were doing stuff before. Copy to the root of the SD, extract the boot.img, flash it as you did before and flash the zip file in TWRP.

Make sense?

It should all go smoothly, but I'll be away for about an hour if you want to hang on before flashing? First boot can take about 10 minutes btw so don't worry if it appears to hang. Any longer than that, reboot and wipe the cache.

I'm Scotland.

I'll be about for a while, I start back on nights tomorrow so I'll be up most of the night to prepare if you fancy giving it a go tonight.

Head back in to recovery, go to advanced, then select Fix Permissions, then reboot.

If that doesn't sort, have you selected AOSP lock screen from the tweaks app? If yes, it's a known issue without a fix ATM (as far as I'm aware).

My phone still reboots when i start doing things occasionally, it's working great but the occasional reboots are still annoying so i'm just going to flash the latest stable cyanogenmod rom and hope for the best

CM10 is still in the nightly phase so you might find some stuff doesn't work. Also, you'll need a special boot.img for CM10 (it's linked in the CM10 OP). It is relatively stable, but don't expect it to be as stable as HTC's stock software. I run it as I prefer the Vanilla Android, but it's not everyones cup of tea.

Re the Viper Random reboots, do you have the AOSP Lock screen active? I suspect that's the issue.

I've not tried it for a while, but I hear very good things about Android Revolution & OrDroid.

Yeah, that's an ok ROM too. I was using it for a while, but I use my phone as an MP3 player and it was pretty unstable for that.

If you want to try CM10 though, I found searsdens builds were a lot more stable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953338

I'm currently running this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102878

I've minimal complaints so far. Battery isn't the best, but it's not the worst either and it's par for the course with AOSP ROMs unfortunately. Not sure if you need a special boot.img with your updated hboot, but I think the boot.img that comes with the ROM contains the relevant patches that work with any.
