Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.
Hello and welcome to the forums, olopocram.
We see the sync loss issue once in a while across many devices, Google/Gmail most often being the culprit.
A lot of users blame their device or some action they've taken while using the device.
I'm thinking that this time you may get to blame yourself.
Relocating the calendar probably did confuse the syncing system, so I'd move it back first, then, if no joy, I'd do the unthinkable and clear cache and data in Gmail and calendar, reboot and re-setup my Google/Gmail account. Your backup will take care of most things like contacts, etc, but I would not expect to see calendar entries make it through the process.
