Default A Step by Step Guide to getting Amazon Appstore, & Google Play on a Curtis Klu LT7033

(7-14-13) Note: I have done a major rewrite of the guide to eliminate problems, improve flow, update broken links, etc. I need your feedback to know if the edits corrected the problems or not.
Warning: Do not attempt to use the firmware update for the LT7033 currently posted at the Curtis International web site! The tablet will be left without touchscreen response. Curtis International has not responded to the demands of it's customers to provide support for it's products! (warning posted 6-28-13 This warning refers to the LT7033 firmware update only. I do not know about any of the other tablets. This warning will be removed if & when Curtis Int. decides to support it's Klu LT7033 product with working firmware and driver updates the way any real manufacturer would.

History:
The Curtis Klu LT7033 is really a nice piece of hardware that was obsolete, and discontinued from the Asian market before Curtis International ever put it's name on the product. A black Friday 2012 marketing blitz was conducted by H.H. Gregg, and due to what appeared to be an incredible deal for a tablet, the entire excess supply from the Asian market was quickly eliminated. Because demand exceeded the supply of the original Klu LT7033, Curtis & H. H. Gregg continued the black Friday blitz with a different tablet calling it the Klu LT7033D.While the two tablets are identical in appearance, they have significant hardware differences inside. Another difference between the two tablets is that the LT7033D shipped already rooted, whereas the LT7033 was not rooted.

The easiest way to determine which model you have is to read it from the box it shipped in. Most of us threw out those boxes a long time ago. There may be other ways to determine which model you have, but if you don't know for certain then you should not attempt any firmware update from Curtis. Even if the firmware updates for both models were known to be good, switching one for the other would almost certainly be disastrous. I know which unit I have, and the firmware update for the LT7033 left my unit with no touchscreen response. If this has already happened to you too, don't give up hope. Charge up the battery, store the unit, and check back here every so often to see if somebody has come up with a solution. (My wife's tablet still works, but I digress.)

The main problem with both models was that the two preloaded market apps weren't very good. The first one, Getjar didn't work at all. The second one SlideME is nice, but it has a very limited selection of apps available, and it requires you to establish an account with them before you can use it. So, what this tablet really needed was to have the two major app markets, Amazon Appstore, and Google Play available. At the time this guide was first written Amazon's Appstore app had a really annoying glitch in it that made it maddening to use unless you understood how to work around it. Fortunately this problem has been eliminated so if you are still experiencing the problem all you have to do is update the app to eliminate the problem.

The second major limitation of the LT7033 was that the device shipped without root access. This device must be rooted to allow the addition of the Google Play market. The LT7033D shipped already rooted which would have made the addition of Google Play really simple except for one thing, the lack of identification on the unit itself. The lack of identification had many people trying to root an already rooted device. To eliminate both of these problems I'm going to ask you to use Amazon's appstore to download a free root checking app called Root Analyzer. This will allow you to update Amazon's appstore and check for root before and after using the RK29 Root Toolkit.

Your continued feedback is the only source of information I have for maintaining this thread, so if you find yourself frustrated you need to express in detail what went wrong.

Now on to the next post, and let's pick up the Root Analyzer.

Default Getting, and Keeping the Amazon Appstore App Up and Working

Note:
There were some glitches about the way Amazon Appstore operated when this post was first written. {(7-6-13 Update) Amazon has updated their Appstore app to eliminate the glitch. This invalidates the portion of this post which has been changed to red font.} You would be foolish to ignore this valuable resource so if you haven't already established an account, do so now, plus I want you to download the Root Analyzer so...

On your PC...
Create an account with Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more It will be faster and easier to do on the PC. If you already have an account, great. Just be sure you have 1 click checkout activated because it is required for use with the tablet.

On your Tablet select...
settings > security > check Unknown sources
use the back button (lower left corner) to exit settings and then,
download the appstore app to your tablet from...
Install AmazonŽ Appstore
Install and open the app.
You will see the white & amber appstore “smile” in the upper left corner, and a create account button in the lower right. Don't press the button! You already have an account. Press the back button to exit appstore, and then press the appstore button again. This time you will get the welcome screen.

Log into your account.
Download, install, and open Root Analyzer.
Use the back button to exit appstore.

Press the button to open appstore again. (humor me)
Now what you will get is a completely useless black screen that may or may not have a search bar at the top. Go ahead, try to use the search bar and you'll see what I mean about useless. This will happen each time you leave appstore & then try to return so...

Here is what you do to get back in.
Use the back button to exit appstore & then go to Settings > Apps > Appstore > Clear Data > OK
Use the back button to get back out of settings & then press the appstore button.
This time you will get the familiar white & amber appstore “smile” / create account screen,
hit the back button to exit appstore.
Press the appstore button again and your back to the welcome screen where you can log into your account and download whatever apps you like.

If your happy enough to just have Amazon Appstore and you don't want to install the Google Play store then your almost done, but before you decide to call it quits let me mention that one of the apps that I really wanted, Dish remote access was only available at Google Play, and its free.

Should you decide to stop now just remember that if you change your mind later just pick up beginning with post 3. If you are going to stop here please skip down to post 5 and then take a moment to provide us with some feedback.

Default Getting Google Play Up and Running

(Note: You may find it helpful to plug in the tablet's charger & go to...
Settings > Developer options > Check Stay awake )(8-3-13 edit SN)

On the tablet...
Download, but DO NOT INSTALL, the Google Play apk (ver. 4.1.10)
com.android.vending-4.1.10.apk (Please report broken links!) (Thanks to casperischinky for the original link to ver. 3.10.10 & more)(Thanks to DEC173000g for reporting broken links & more!)

Download, and install an old version of ES File Explorer (10/21/13 edit) This is one of those links that keeps breaking so if you find it broken please let me know. The instructions in this guide will not match the newer versions. (Thanks to mohawkwarrior for the latest link break notice!)

There is a newer version of ES File Explorer available, but if you download that one my instructions will cease to be relevant. (Thanks DEC17300g) If you already have the newer version on your tab just uninstall it and then load up the older, classic version. You can always reverse the process once you've gotten Google play up and running.

Open Root Analyzer, if the device is rooted, continue with the instructions in this post.
If your device is not rooted skip down to post 4 (You did download Root Analyzer from Amazon in post 2 didn't you? If not, do it now, its free.)

Open ES File Explorer.
At the bottom left of the screen there are 3 vertical dots. Press this button.
A menu pops up, press settings.
select View > Details
Scroll down to Root settings > check Root Explorer.
A warning will pop up, select yes,
If you get a message that says, "Sorry test failed" skip down to post 4 & begin there,
otherwise, another pop up, check the remember box, then select Allow
Check mount file system, another pop up, choose allow.
Check the remaining boxes, when all 5 boxes are checked...
Use the back button to get back to the main ES File Explorer screen (you should be at.. /sdcard/ )Use the UP button to navigate to the root(/). Look at the file permissions of the /system/ (folder) it should read rwxr-xr-x if it does, skip the next paragraph & proceed.
If the file permissions of the /system/ folder do not read rwxr-xr-x then...
long press the system folder icon until a menu pops up,
scroll to the bottom of the menu and select properties
Next to the permissions press Change
A 3 x 3 matrix of check boxes will appear...
Check all of the boxes except; Group write, & Other write.
Press OK
Press OK
Navagate to the /sdcard/Download/ (folder)
press the (multi) Select button, select the Google Play apk you downloaded earlier, & press copy
use the up button to get to the root directory. (On this device it looks like a phone with a / )
press the system (folder icon), then press the app (folder icon). (you should be at /system/app/ )
Press the (multi) Select button, select the Google Play apk & press the paste button.
(Don't be surprised that the Google Play apk seems to disappear, its made up of many smaller files that will be put back together after you reboot.)

Shut down the tablet, and reboot being prepared to answer yes or allow to any pop-ups presented to you.

You should now have Google Play in your list of apps.
Open Google play to make sure its working properly, if it is not, I'll give you a full refund of the price of this advice, minus a small handling fee.

Regardless of the state of Google play...

Open ES File Explorer and click...
(3 vertical dots) > Settings > Root settings
Uncheck Mount File System,
and uncheck Up to Root
Back out of ES File Explorer.

Leave Feedback! Please, you may just save a 1000 people like yourself from suffering through a minor error, or a broken link.

Skip post 4, your done!

Default So Your Klu 7033 Isn't Rooted, No Problemo

(Note: You may find it helpful to plug in the tablet's charger & go to...
Settings > Developer options > Check Stay awake )(8-3-13 edit SN)

On your tablet...
Settings > developer options > check USB debugging.
Settings > security > check Unknown sources

On your PC...
Set your folder options to show hidden files.
(If you don't know how just... Start > help > search for show hidden files & follow the instructions.)

Download and completely extract...
ADB Driver RK29.zip (Please report broken links)

If you are using WIN8 follow the instructions about how to disable driver signature enforcement before attempting to install the ADB drivers. (Thanks profit & ddpinkerton618) (Please report broken links)

Start the device manager (if you don't know how, start > help > search for device manager)

Connect a USB cable first to the tablet, then to the PC.
The device should appear in the device manager as an Android _____ (phone, device) and then...
click the arrow next to it's device description then
double click it's name to open it's properties dialog box.
> Driver tab > Update driver > Let me pick > Have Disk > Browse to the folder & click android_winusb.inf > OK
The computer may give you a warning that the driver is unsigned, just choose install anyway.
The computer should recognize and install the driver. ( < 30 sec. )

If the driver is not recognized see post 116 for further instructions. Then return here to finish.

Once the drivers are installed the General tab should say the device is working properly.
If you've got the device working properly...

Download and completely extract the Root RK29 Toolkit 1.3.zip provided by SferaDev
Root RK29 Tab Toolkit 1.3.zip (Please report broken links)

On the tablet, click on the status / notifications tray in the lower right corner, it's menu will open then click on Usb connected. Verify that mass storage is off. Back out.

On the PC click...
Start > computer > navigate to where you extracted the runme.bat file from the Root Toolkit Zip. Double click runme.bat

A command window will pop up with a list of 6 things you need to be sure are done before you proceed. These are (1) Install the ADB drivers of the folder. (What we just did.) (2) Power on your tablet (3) Turn off mass storage. (you just verified that) (4) Enable USB debugging (5) Enable unknown sources & (6) connect a USB cable.

(If you have been following these instructions you already have all this done, otherwise go ahead and do whatever you still need to do.)

Hit enter and then wait patiently. The whole process takes less than 5 min. but your tablet will reboot several times in the process. When its done your tablet should be rooted, and the program will ask you to...
press enter to exit the program. Press enter.

Take a safety pin, or a paper clip, and press the reset button on the back of the tablet. This will reboot the tablet.

After the tablet finishes rebooting...
Open ES File Explorer
At the bottom left of the screen there are 3 vertical dots. Press this button.
A menu pops up, press settings.
Select View > Details.
Scroll down to,and select Root settings
check Root Explorer.
A warning will pop up, select yes.
Another pop up, Check the remember box, and then select Allow
Check all of the remaining boxes, when all 5 boxes are checked...

Use the back button to get back to the main ES File Explorer screen (you should be at.. /sdcard/ )
Navagate to the root directory (On this device it looks like a phone with a / )
Look at the file permissions of the /system/ (folder) if they read rwxr-xr-x skip the remainder of this paragraph
Press OK
Press OK

Navigate to /sdcard/Download/ )
press the (multi) Select button, select the com.android.vending-4.1.10.apk you downloaded earlier, & press copy
use the up button to get to the root directory. (On this device it looks like a phone with a / )
press the system (folder icon), then press the app (folder icon) (you should be at... /system/app/ )
Press the (multi) Select button, select the com.android.vending-4.1.10.apk & press the paste button.
(Don't be surprised that the com.android.vending-4.1.10.apk seems to disappear, its made up of many smaller files that will be put back together when you reboot.)

Shut down the tablet, remove the USB cable, & reboot it being prepared to answer allow or yes to any pop ups that may be presented by the Superuser program.

You should now have Google Play in your list of apps. If so fire it up to make sure that it works.

If Google play does not work, you are required by law to post feedback!

Regardless of a working Google play or not there is one more thing you must do...

Open ES File Explorer & click...
(3 vertical dots) > Settings > Root settings
Uncheck Mount File System,
Uncheck Up to Root.
Back out of ES File Explorer.

Leave Feedback! Please, you may save a thousand people from wading through a procedure that doesn't work.

Happy Much Gratitude

Perfect, SuperNoober! Followed the instructions step by step and we're good to go!! The LT7033D is, in fact, already rooted. Watch out, don't assume ES File Explorer is already installed, though. It's a task manager that comes stock. Follow these instructions to THE LETTER and the Klu indeed becomes a treasure.

Default Curtis LT7052

I apologize for the hijacking of this thread but i could not find the information i was looking for and this was the closest i could find. i tried to follow the instructions laid out to root a curtis klu tablet model LT7052 as i am aware that the 7033 is NOT the 7052 i was hoping that the root procedure would be similar. to no avail the tablet would not root. my question is what would be different in the procedure that would allow me to root the 7052 tablet and install both the google play store and the amazon app store. i was thinking that it might be a different set of drivers but as i am new to this arena i have not been able to find the right drivers. please oh masters of the android forums PLEASE HELP!!

much appreciation in advance,

Default Be Carful

I thank you very kindly for your reply because it makes it possible for me to warn you, and everyone else, not to throw caution to the wind. According to the Curtis International web site...

The Curtis Klu LT7052 uses an A8 3core processor.
The Curtis Klu LT7033 uses an RK2906 or equivalent.

Seriously I hope you did not damage your tablet.

I will start a new thread for the LT7052 and ask Scary Alien if he thinks there should be more space between the two. The title of the new thread is...
Getting Amazon Appstore & Google Play on Klu LT7052 Step by Step

Ziplip Updated files to include drivers from Curtis cd

I apologize for any for any errors that may have been apparent over the last 24 hours or so. About the same time I thought I was done I received requests concerning the 7052 and including the drivers from Curtis. I thought that would be no problem, but I underestimated my ability to screw up when I get this tired.

And now I'm going to go catch up on about a weeks worth of sleep.

I would really appreciate it if one of you guys who understands the process would give the whole guide a good top to bottom QC inspection.

Thanks

Default Warning to anyone who has used the Guide before the time of this post.

I have just finished editing the guide to include a step that was a monumental oversight. If you used this guide before the time of this post please follow the following instructions immediately.

Open ES File Explorer and click...
(3 vertical dots) > Settings > Root settings
Uncheck Mount File System
Uncheck Up to Root
Back out of ES File Explorer

While you were doing that you may have had the program asking for super user access. If so, you may also have noticed that even if you picked deny access the program was granted super user privileges anyway. Even the most careless of system administrators only grant themselves super user access long enough to accomplish the task at hand, and then they turn super user access back off. Unchecking the above will eliminate the risk of accidentally erasing something vital, and turning your tablet into a paper weight.

Alright I, after trying to update drivers repeatedly using the drivers mavrikmeercat got from curtisint and failing miserably, went and used the 2nd second set of drivers provided by SferaDev. I finally got my PC to recognize LT7033 as an ADB winusb device. I have root and google play store! I sincerely appreciate everyone's hard work on this and supernoober's redirection. Thanks!

Opps, sorry about that. Apparently the Curtis drivers never did work.

Default List of Curtis Klu & Proscan Tablets that may work with this Guide

Known good:

Klu LT7033 A thru E
Klu LT8029
Proscan PLT7044K
Klu LT8036
Klu LT8088
Proscan PLT8088

{Below are known good, but requires editing of the android_winusb.inf file}

Klu LT7035J
Proscan PLT7035J
Orange TB7030

As yet Untested:

Really any device that incorporates the Rockchip RK29 family of processors and runs Ice Cream Sandwich should work. Devices running Jelly Bean may also work, but your mileage may vary.

Known no go units:

We haven't given up on any yet, but I'm sure there are some out there that just won't work, so if that is what you have, thats what we all want to know.

If you attempt to get Google Play on a device that is not yet listed, please report your results, good or bad, so the list can be updated.

Default Worked after a couple tweaks

On my PC, it just saw my 7033D as an Android device. This happened after I found some ADB drivers from the net somewhere. The original drivers for this device didn't seem to work. When I went to root the device, the runme.bat file returned a lot of device not found errors when I ran it from Windows. I then opened a CMD prompt as administrator and ran the runme.bat file from there and it worked. Thank you.

Default Curtis International or Proactive Supply Chain Solutions, you decide.

ilovebatz:
The LT7033D shipped already rooted. If you had followed the step by step guide step, by step, you would have had Amazon Appstore & Google play on your tablet without any need to load the ADB drivers and you would not have run the root toolkit runme batch file at all.

cabiggs152:
Read the response to ilovebatz. I need to know what model you are dealing with to know what might be wrong. The model number should be printed on the box.

I will attempt to get a good set of drivers from Curtis, but with that said, I want you to notice the address listed at Curtis International's web sitehttp://www.curtisint.com/about/contact-Us.asp
It is:
315 Attwell drive, Etobicoke, Ontario, M9W 5C1
Load their address into Google maps & go to street level
Take a drive around the block.
I don't see a sign that says Curtis International, all I see is a warehouse with a sign that says Proactive Supply Chain Solutions

The LT7033 is a nice device, but I somehow just don't think we are going to get very good customer support from Proactive Supply Chain Solutions, do you?

This might sound weird.. but when I was loading the drivers.. I didn't go into the i386 or the amd64 folders.. there was a file I was able to select in the folder both of these folders were in that I had selected to make it work.. Also I was not able to update drivers through devices & printers.. I had to right click on my computer > click on manage > click on device manager> find device>right click> and then manually select them from the folder this way.. It was a little different than what I was reading on here, but it worked! I forgot to mention this last night

Hey man, I had the same issue. The issue is Windows 8 doesn't like playing with unsigned drivers. To fix this, follow the instructions at https://laslow.net/2012/03/14/disable-driver-signature-enforcement-in-windows-8/ and then try the ADB Driver RK29.zip file as indicated. It worked fine on my Windows 8 64-bit box.

Followed instructions listed and worked great on two Curtis Klu LT7033 tablets. I used a Windows XP SP3 laptop for connection with an Intel i5 CPU and the drivers listed worked. There are several ways to get to the device to change the drivers the only thing I see was different I think it listed to select the AMD or the i386 folder depending on your processor. It would not let me select the specific folder I had to select the root folder that was created when it unzipped, that folder name was "ADB Driver RK29". From there it found the driver and installed without a problem.
Very clear instructions and much appreciated, THANKS.

Thanks for all the help. Google Store and Amazon Market easily insalled on my LT7033E (also comes rooted). One tip - in ES File Explorer, to select and copy the Google Play apk, click and hold. Otherwise if you just short click you will install it.

Default Another way to avoid pasting files to the wrong place is...

You can also use the (multi) select button with just one file. This is what I originally meant, but it was not clear enough the way I wrote it the first time. I've made a number of edits based on the replies everyone's made and I feel the guide is getting to the point of being really good, perhaps even to the point of good enough as is. (I hope so because I'd like to start playing with the tablet more than writing about it.)

The ADB drivers have been proven on XP, Win 7, and even Win 8, that means they are the most up to date currently available, and should be inclusive from win 2000 to win 8. The RK29 root toolkit has proven effective for both the LT7033, and the LT7052. Both of these files are ready to populate the All Things Root Sticky.

To all of you guys who did the original work in making this guide happen, and to all of you who helped refine this guide by providing your comments I say...

THANKS A GOOGLE!!!

Default New Curtis International Jingle

Already broke!

This thread has been, and still is, dedicated to helping everyone who purchased a Curtis International Klu LT7033 get Amazon Appstore, and Google Play up and running on their device. Guy's this is fantastic, noobs like myself really appreciate it.

I am now having a problem though...

I only took the steps for the Amazon Store, that was enough to get a few games on the tablet for my toddler son. For a couple days everything was working fine. I downloaded a few apps, my son was happy, life was good.

Today, when I was trying to download another game for him, the process got hung up on the download step.

It goes through the purchase step just fine, but once I click "download", the download bar will show forever with no progress. I tried everything I could think of...different apps, uninstalled and reinstalled the Amazon Store app. Still the same.

Any ideas??

thanks much

Close amazon appstore. Go to settings--> apps--> amazon appstore--> and clear cache and wipe data. Open appstore again and sign in again. (Repeat until it works) you should be able to download again. Do this anytime this happens..

Thanks Mavrik, I have tried this, many times. I've gone so far to completely uninstall and re-install the appstore. Still no luck.

You mention "repeat until it works"...between restarting the tablet and doing the clear data steps, I'm sure I've done it at least 5 times now. Are you suggesting it could take 10+ times till it works?

I should also note the only thing "new" I did with the tablet, since I last downloaded an app successfully, was to put a couple movies on an SD Card to watch on the tablet. I can't imagine how this would be related, but other than that little addition the tablets entire life was playing apps from the Amazon appstore. I did take the SD Card out of the tablet, thinking that may have had some affect on all this....but no luck.

thanks again for the help

Default More specific info please

frostydog:

The more specific you can be about what you are trying to do the more likely one of us will be to answer your question. For instance, what app were you trying to download? I'd like to try to download the same app to see if the same happens on my unit.

I don't have an answer for you, but things I would be curious about would be if anything actually did download to the /sdcard/ folder.

Other than that I'm glad to see Maverikmeercat is still out there, where did the rest of you guys go?

Also try clearing the dalvik cache(not the same thing as cache) which would normally be done in a recovery but we aren't there yet. So you can do it manually like so:

Open es file explorer
Go up to root ( / )
Open data
Open dalvik
select all files in dalvik folder
Select delete
Now right from there, press the power button and choose shutdown (don't back out of anything)
Now power back up. It will take a few min to boot because it will rewrite all needed files to the dalvik.
Try your app again and see if that worked

Usually the dalvik gets cluttered when you add/remove a lot of apps and is a good idea to clear it once a week on low end devices because the ram gets all cluttered with unused junk. Also apps that have been removed sometimes stay in dalvik and clearing and rebooting will rewrite only installed/relevant files during boot.

I don't have an answer for you, but things I would be curious about would be if anything actually did download to the /sdcard/ folder.

Other than that I'm glad to see Maverikmeercat is still out there, where did the rest of you guys go?
Thanks SuperNoober,

I was trying to download an app for my son called "Stack 'N Puzzles", its a pay app.

The only thing I can see on my sd card are the movies I copied over from my laptop, doesn't appear anything got downloaded to the card.

Open es file explorer
Go up to root ( / )
Open data
Open dalvik
select all files in dalvik folder
Select delete
Now right from there, press the power button and choose shutdown (don't back out of anything)
Now power back up. It will take a few min to boot because it will rewrite all needed files to the dalvik.

Thanks Mavrik,

I never downloaded es file explorer (I know, my bad). Is there any way to do what you describe using the default apps available on the 7022?

I really appreciate all the suggestions guys!
thanks again

Which model do you have?

Oh hell just load up play store. It is not hard to do, just take long, slow, deep breaths, you'll be ok. I promise. If I can do it anyone can. Except the manufacturer that is.
With how screwed up Amazon appstore acts, I wouldn't doubt they did something to screw that up too.

Anyway, its past my bedtime so good luck.

Yeah honestly I stop using amazon because it is such a pain. google play is the way to go. I really don't have any need for amazon. I just put it in my ROM because so many of you were looking to use it but it has given me lots of trouble as well

Thanks guys...that will be my path.

Is there anywhere else I can get es file explorer, since I can't get from Amazon? Seems to be a pretty important component for the google play install.

thanks

Default SlideME payment option to link to Amazon account

I wouldn't assume that because Amazon froze on Stack and Puzzles that it will freeze on ES File Explorer, however if that is the case, you can use SlideME which comes preloaded on the LT7033. Slide ME has a payment option that allows you to link to your already existing Amazon account. Be sure to post your result regardless of outcome so everyone will have an idea of what works, and what doesn't.

How about we use this instead?

es_file_explorer_v1.6.2.4.apk (2.81 MB) via their Download page.

Thanks!

No problem, mavrikmeercat .

It's just best to only post links to official sources or if you are the author/owner of the software.

Thanks!
