There is no need to auto kill apps anymore. The OS will purge ram as a foreground process needs it, ics is pretty good at this. The only reason to kill an app is if it is problematic. Auto killing is just killing apps and then they have to use CPU cycles/power and ram as they restart again by themselves. Especially if you multitask a lot.
The best option, IMO. Is if your rooted, get 'app quarantine' and freeze any bloatware or apps you don't use. Along with 'es task manger' and the start up manager to turn off apps you don't want to start on boot. I do however do a low level app kill at the end of the day, but keeping most used apps in the ram is what makes the phone snappy and smooth. The best thing to do to save battery is to toggle 3g data off when you don't need it and use WiFi instead when available.
