Default using Torque with $29.95 Kyocera Rise from Target?

Hi, I want an Andriod device in my car just to run Torque.

I don't want to buy a cellphone plan from Virgin but need Bluetooth for the car interface and Wifi for updates etc.

Does anyone know if the Virgin Mobile Kyocera Rise (on sale at Target 12/26/12 for $29.95) can be used without a cellphone plan as a small Android device?

Will I need to root it?
If so, what is the easiest way to root the Rise?

Check the torque forum for details, but nearly all the features should work without a data plan.

I see no reason that rooting should be necessary.

$30 for a new brand new Android device sounds like a really good deal....is it a good deal or is it a crappy device that Target is just "blowing out" to get rid of them?

It will work on WiFi only. Bluetooth will work fine, so torque will work. It is a sweet device for $29, won't find a better bang for the buck. You can even get wifi calling and texting with Google voice and grooveip ($5 from play store). Works for almost all android devices on WiFi.

The Kyocera Rise shares the same specs as its brother, the Kyocera Hydro, but it covers a different niche. Instead of being water resistant, it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Specs include a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, Android 4.0 and a 3.5... Read More
