hello andriod forums!

i just recently purchased a le pan (three actually, one for my parents, one for my sister and one for me) and so far, i am very pleased with it. i did a lot of research prior to buying, and in the end, the functions, options and price made the le pan a no-brainer.

it plays netflix, it runs flash and you can watch internet streams. it pretty much does everything i'll ever need when i'm too lazy to power up my laptop, but the one thing that does leave me a little disappointed is the lack of a functional app that let's you utilize the web cam. i mean, what's the point of having a web cam when froyo isn't compatible with all the major web chat programs?

i contacted le pan customer service for help, and they were fantastic. they were quick with a response and very polite. they suggested a firmware update, and supplied me with a download link. the problem is, i can't seem to transfer the files from my card and upload it onto my le pan. is anyone else having a problem updating the firmware? if you have done it successfully, could you please help a noob out and walk me through the process? to get an idea of what i'm doing, here's my process, step by step:

-i downloaded the file
-i extracted it directly to the card, basically creating a new file for it

should i have extracted it to my laptop first?
should i have placed it in a specific file on my sdcard?
where is the "root" file?

thank you for any help that any of you can provide.

Welcome To AF, Retrokid!

What format is the file you downloaded? .exe/.bat/.apk?

It might be you need to connect the tablet to the PC and run the exe file from the PC. I take it the instructions didn't come with the download? You've posted once, so the site filter should allow you to post links now. If you give me the download link, I can have a look for you.

RK
Pull the sd card out of the tablet. Insert into laptop. Erase EVERYTHING off the card.
Extract the contents of the download to the card.. do not make any folders. This is what they mean by root.
Then follow the instructions...
Power off tablet
Install sd card
plug in if battery under 50%
Power on using "press and hold (vol - ) and power, once logo shows, release power then release (vol-)"
It should then be on the intall firmware screen
Press vol- to select install firmware press power to start.
Wait for install
Use vol - to select and reboot using power to select.
Should be installed correctly.

They then tell u to install the 6 programs...i only installed the ones i wanted...(adobe)

Hope this helps.

Typed on my LePan..man was that a pain.

thanks for all the help and suggestions, everyone.

el presidente: here's the link i was given Download 4431.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way. i downloaded the file, then extracted it to my c drive. from there, i copy/pasted everything directly onto my sd card. i erased everything else on the card prior, so it was empty.

manute: yeah, i followed those steps exactly and still got the "bad firmware" screen.

could it possibly be the tablet? le pan told me that the build number is also the firmware number? out of the box, the build number is 4078, so i'm assuming it needs the update to 4431.

i tried downloading the file again, and got the same results.

RKid

It might be a bad SD card... do you have another SD card you can try?
Also try downloading the 4431 file again, maybe it was corrupt.

You said you have 3 of these?
did you try a firmware update on all 3? if not try the other ones. Maybe 1 in 3 is bad?

If anyone is wondering... the instructions from LePan are:
Quote:
Le Pan Tablet PC TC970 (Wi-Fi) - Upgrade Process:

STEP 1: Please remove the Micro SD Card from device, use card reader to read and then delete the card contents on PC.

STEP 2: Copy the download Apps and the new software file to root of Micro SD Card.
STEP 3: Insert the Micro SD Card into Tablet.

STEP 4: Press and hold [Vol-] and [Power] key to turn on your Tablet PC, once logo shows up, release [power] first and then [Vol-].

STEP 5: Press [Vol-] to move the light bar to select “Yes——Install the firmware”, then press [power] key to start the upgrading. [Note: if battery is lower than 60%, please use wall adaptor to charge the Tablet.]

STEP 6: Firmware installation in processing:

STEP 7: With [Vol] key to move the light bar to Reboot system now and with [power] to confirm. Then Tablet will restart.

STEP 8: Once device is on, please follow the direction to set up the time etc.

STEP 9: Press Menu or Applications , and then touch File Manager, install below 5 APK docs: - Adobe Reader - Adobe Flash Player - GoogleBooks - iReader - Kindle

STEP 10. After installation of Apps, upgrade finish.
----- THE END ----
Also, you might want to try these threads over in XDA, they talk about rooting but if you read through, they mention the firmware update as well. Maybe someone over they can help.

Try and faster memory card than the one that came with the tablet. On another forum LePan support told the user that a slow card will give you the bad firmware message. The user put in a class 6 card and it worked the first time he tried to install the firmware.

thanks for all the help, everyone. i finally got it to work, and here's how...

i was talking to customer service and suggested they send me the link to the file again because maybe the problem was with the file. they directed me to the customer support section of their site, where there were not one, but two files that had to be downloaded. it seems they split up the initial file they were sending everyone into two files, and after downloading both, i had no problems installing.

i don't know exactly what's different with the firmware update though. does anyone have a list of changes?

also, i'm loving the tablet, but still can't find a decent video chat app. i tried downloading the one that everyone's posting, but it still gives me a black screen =(.

Just a problem I ran into that others might find of interest. My new one had the old firmware so downloaded the new. Went through the procedure and was told the file was bad. I downloaded four times, tried three different sd cards and still nothing.

Contacted Le Pan and got nowhere. They did tell me the only time that message comes up is when the firmware file is missing, or the sd card is missing.

That made me wonder if the class of sd card could be a problem. Checked the one that came with the unit and it was not marked. The others I had been using were class 4. I dug around and found a class 6, went through the procedure and it worked perfectly.

Evidently a slow card can cause the message as well.

Okay...so I ordered mine yesterday after doing some fairly extensive research and thought I had everything figured out. I got some misinformation as it relates to a "must have" app for me and whether it will work on this device. If anyone would be kind enough to see if WatchESPN is compatible with the LePan I would be greatly appreciative. I have a vague report that it does not (but it was from someone in Canada). IF it does not work can you access the WatchESPN directly form the ESPN website?

Thanks in advance.

Default Got mine too

After reading all your comments, I finally decided to step-in. I ordered it from Amazon.ca at 169 CDN$.. Funny, it is still at 249.99 USD on Amazon.com, but they are "temporairely" out of stock.

Should be delivered before Xmas.

Sure new and more powerfull tablets are coming but for a newbie like me, it will be a great start and hard to beat at the price!

Thanks to all for your advices and support.

Does this tablet can read ebooks from Amazon or others like .epub?

Hey all,

I've had my Le Pan for a week now, and I love it! I took advantage of the 169$ deal at Amazon.ca and bought one for the wife too! She's loving it as well.

Here's some thing's I've discovered.

1- Don't buy CoPilot for your offline GPS program if you're getting one. It won't work with this tablet. It's too bad, because I bought it for my Acer Liquid (phone) which is also running froyo and it works great, it's a good program. I ended up getting Sygic for the Lepan, and it seems quite nice. I needed to get one (GPS proggy) as I'm getting rid of my phone because work is now providing me one (Blackberry, ugh, but hey, it's free).

2- My wife's tablet had a nasty habit of constantly freezing and having to hard reset (little paperclip hole button) until I updated the firmware and then it's been fine.

3- The battery life is AMAZING! I've only charged it twice since I've had it, and I've been doing Netflix and gaming.

4- The Targus leather case/stand for Touchpad fits this tablet great and works quite nicely.

Anyways, thanks a million to all you guys for the reviews and caveats, as well as the links to proggies and accessories. I just wish they could come up with a decent music creation app (like ThumbJam on iOS) for Android.

watchESPN asks you to sign in with a provider before you can view, and your options are vios, verizon and some other carriers. didn't have any of them, so i don't know if you can view after you sign in, but you definitely can't just launch the app and watch episodes of sports center without jumping through a few hoops.

Hi -- I am considering buying this for my dad as a Christmas present, but he really wants something that will double as an ereader that can handle epub, mobi, pdf and txt documents. Does anyone know if this can do that? If I would need to download an app for that, if someone could recommend an easy-to-use one that would work, that would be sooo appreciated! TIA! :-)

Download the Kindle and the Nook readers if they aren't on the unit and that will cover it I think.

Hey, I have the same question about how it handles pdf and txt documents, is this a good unit for that?

There are other readers as well - ireader, aldiko, cool reader (good in my mind) and others as well, just go to market and search for ereaders.

txt files always work :-) as to pdf, I haven't done a lot of reading on them but downloaded a few and they seem to work nicely. The screen is big enough so that you don't have to pad back and forth.

Thanks so much for your response! Does one usually need to have more than one app for this sort of thing or do they just do different things? (Would you use one app for one type of file and the other one for other file types?)

One other question -- I just noticed that Amazon has the next version of this thing available. Is it worth waiting for it to come down in price? I don't want to get my dad something that will be completely obsolete and not supported in 6 months...

Yes, the kindle does kindle and pdf while nook does epub etc. You can get along with one app if you use Calibre a library/converter program. You can take one format and convert it to another format though there are limitations on purchased books that are protected.

Almost any electronics you buy right now will be obsolete in 6 months. New features/products are coming out fast and furious.

The Le Pan II (I've read online) is due out in Feb. but nobody seems to know for sure. It has a slightly faster processor and newer android system.

Had I known it was coming out I would have waited, but since I already have the older version I will be satisfied with it. It is a nice unit and even if I waited till the II as soon as I got it something neater would be coming up

Thanks again! I ended up buying the Le Pan of Amazon.ca, and am hoping it will get here before Christmas. I did some research on the ereaders, and I think I'll give the Alkido one a try -- it looks like it will do most of the stuff I'm looking for. There was one called Stanza that looked really good, but is apparently not being updated or supported anymore, so I'm thinking it's probably not the best choice.

Interesting about the Le Pan II -- Amazon currently has it listed as currently out of stock. Unless I'm looking at an older version than the one I ended up buying...

In any case -- I'm really excited and can't wait for this thing to get here, even if it is not for me! (At least I will get to play with it while I get it set up!)

The Le Pan II should be out by the beginning of February - Le Pan just added the specs and description to their own site today.

Try Mantano Reader, if you want to buy a eBook app - I prefer it over some of the other choices.

I've had my Le Pan for about a week now, and other than some minor annoyances (a freeze here or there), it's been well worth the $170 I paid for it, shipped!

I got my LePan TC970 about 2 weeks ago and I love it!!! I have achieved permenant root and was able to change the screen density to get the icons and task bar smaller. It's quick and very responsive. I read several reviews on it and ordered the screen protector from ebay. It got to me before the tablet did, so I put it on before I even powered it on. The GPS is flawless! I use Sygic and it works great!! I got a Targus case for the Ipad that fits pretty well. I did have to make a SLIGHT modification, but no one even noticed. My friends and co-workers saw it and are pretty mad that it's sold out everywhere now. I cant seem to put it down for too long, lol. The battery life is ridicuous!! I still haven't been able to let the battery drain. It lasts forever, lol. It's truly the best bang for your buck!!

Wink Any tips?

I am getting the Lepan TC970 for Christmas this year. I have read all good reviews, but I have a few concerns. First, does anyone have a decent, usable video chatting app they know of that will work on the tablet?? I really want to use Skype or something of that sort but everyone is saying it's not compatible... Any advice? Also, any ideas were I can get some screen protecters? On Amazon the ones made for that specific tablet are $8.90 plus $4.90 for shipping WITH ONLY ONE SCREEN PROTECTOR!! help..! Are there an good, cheap cases out there that will work for the Lepan? Lastly, any good apps? If so, please name your favorites that are cheap or free... Please hurry I want to be ready for it by Christmas.. Thanks!!

FYI, there is a new Le Pan TC970 forum here:
Le Pan TC 970 - Android Forums

I've asked the forum admin to move this thread, but in either case, it would be helpful if new posts with new topics where in then new group area.

Got my last month from Walmart. It worked fine until two days ago. I am not able to create the initial Google account and load other aps such as YouTube. I get the following message: Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" But, Yes I am able to browse the internet using the browser on the tablet. I downloaded and reloaded latest V. of Android 2.2 and problem continues. I submitted a help request to manufacture, waiting for answer.

Staples has the Targus Truss Folio iPad case (SKU 403973 regularly $49.99) on sale for $9.99 for a few more days. This is the iPad version not the iPad 2 or the iPad 1 and 2 version. I bought one this morning in AZ. You can press on the the upper right hand case tablet holder which covers the power button to turn the tablet on. All the ports and switches on the tablet are accessible with the case closed and the four touch switches are not covered when the case is open like they are in most iPad cases. There was no stock online but the stores had the case in stock (my store's computer said 15 and there were several on the shelves. It's a little heavy but is made of leather, will be very protective and definitely shows the Targus quality.

Question regarding WIFI connection issues with Le Pan. Ive read about the issues with Le Pan having troubles re connecting to Home WIFI after connecting to another WIFI. My problem is I cant get my new LE PAN to connect to my HOME WIFI at all! It sees it, recognizes it, allowed me to select and enter WEP password, but it wil not connect.

Under WIFI it says " obtaining IP address from WIFI NAME" then "scanning" then "connecting" then "disconnected." this cycles over and over

Under WIFI NAME it says "obtaining IP address" then "remembered, secured with WEP" and that cycles over and over

Ive contact Le Pan online support and have heard nada. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks

Thumbs up Le Pan

I bought mine about a month ago and LOVE it. I am slowly figuring out how to do things on it - like organize, but really it is very easy to use. I found for fingerprints, putting on a screen protector helps a bit. The connector is the same as the iPAD and other apple products.

Cry touch screen problems

I have only had my Le Pan for about five hours. I shut off my tablet after connecting it to charge on my home computer. When I turned Le Pan back on maybe thirty minutes later, the entire touch screen was working normally other than a one inch column on the right hand side-where the "soft buttons" are. This area of the touch screen was completely unresponsive. I rebooted the tablet a number of times, and the problem persisted. I even tried the filmware update. I then restored Le Pan to factory settings, and the problem did not go away.
Is this fixable? Or is this thing DOA?

I've had mine for a week and after doing the update, it fixed the camera mirror effect. I'm using the Skype app for video calls with no problems...worked fine for me.

Given this tablet has its own section now, this thread is probably best placed there.

its going for $99 at walmart.com
I was on walmart.com and noticed these tablets that come part of a bundle, and saw what they had some tablets for $99, then there was a button to see "9 other tablets" and that's where I see the le pan for $99
now as for the "bundle" the other items in the bundle are optional. you can just take the le pan. funny thing is that the same tablet is listed at regular price if you just type in le pan tc 970 in the search bar. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tablet-PCs-eReader-featuring-7-10-Color-Touchscreen-Google-Android-OS/19397282?findingMethod=Recommendation:wm:Best%20Se llers

Default LePan at Big Lots

Big Lots has the LePan in store for $199. I've noticed a lot of tablets there.
