Has Metro actually came out and said that? I mean besides some bonehead that works in a store? Wasn't the Optimus M updated to Gingerbread OTA? If it wasn't there's other ways for an official update anyway.

The Metro version of Optimus was not updated to Gingergread 2.3. It's still officially on Froyo. LG rolled out Gingerbread to other Optimus around the world, and even to the Sprint version here in the USA but Metro discontinued it on purpose before LG could give it to us -- so we would have to buy an HTC Wildfire or Samsung Admire to get 2.3 with an Android phone with similar specs to the LG Optimus.

I work for metropcs corp and I know for a fact the esteem will not be getting the ics update. The connect has a better chance. Metropcs will be getting a device with 4.0 during the 3rd quarter of 2012.

Negative. The Optimus never got a Gingerbread update.
Likewise, Metro will never give the Esteem an official update to ICS... there's no profit in that from their POV.

sucks for the customers of metro PCs I guess that's their way of nickel and diming their customers not that they lose any real money by approving an update. oh well that's what root is for.

Also, I contacted Samsung about an update of the indulge to 2.3, from almost ancient 2.2, and they kindly explained to me, jumping through some hoops and legalese, that the update was ready for release on both metro and cricket, and only cricket went ahead and rolled out the update to their indulges, while Metro took theirs and squatted over it... Now the indulges on cricket (no less), have gingerbread, while all metro indulges are stuck on either 2.2.1, if you bought early, or 2.2.2 if you waited until the second half of last year.
They won't even send you the 2.2.2 update!

Like i said metro aint gonna be giving out free os updates they only interested in making you spend more money on new phones instead of giving you a reason to stick to your 8 month old phone

And as android is open sourced, I doubt metro could legally charge us for a 4.0 upgrade lol
I tried to root my old phone (Asend) and i messed it up pretty bad and i really like this phone so i dont think i will be doing that. Hopefully metro will get smart and get a device with 4.0 if not im switching to someone who is smart

Just sayin
u damn right but i dont think they would care if we got around that since they dont seem to care about us installing custom roms into our phones. their main concerns would be wifi tethering and probaly getting around data speed limits.

LG is not releasing ICS for the Esteem. The LG Revolution (same phone w/Verizon) is not even getting it. In fact any LG handset that is not in the list below will not be getting it.
Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS Upgrade Schedule
by LG Mobile on Monday, December 26, 2011 at 2:00am ·
LG will be offering the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS upgrade for a range of LG smart-phones which were introduced this year. The global upgrade schedule will begin in the second and third quarters of 2012, which will be followed by a global roll out.
During the second quarter of 2012 upgrades will begin for the following smartphone models: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse. These upgrades will be followed by upgrades for the following smartphone models during the third quarter of 2012: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.
LG will be taking all possible measure to offer a smooth OS upgrade in a timely manner. The exact start dates can vary by market, as each country can have different requirements, depending on the carrier and the smartphone model.
LG would like to thank its customers for their most valued loyalty and support. Further details on the ICS OS upgrade, including their exact start dates, will be released prior to their commencement. Please stay tuned for more updates from LG.

I'm sure its a marketing/business tactic. All companies do it and not all androids get their promised updates either. I'm sure the company has to decide if its worth the production for an existing model vs a new line of better handset? There are to many different types of hardware in each seperate android device. That's an advantage with the iPhone their all built the same and act the same. One update for the same device.
My question is, will Google make it faster and easier with their updates to new OS version for phone manufactors and/or a software update tool on a PC/mac/Linux os to sync the update? So users can have that control and Google directly work with all phone manufacturers and chipset manf and get all info and let the update tool do all the work. But that might leave room for a lot of errors...lol

That n paid carrier customers are locked into a 2yr contact, so carriers have to make it worth it for them to stay.

I honestly have zero faith in Facebook or Twitter updates from manufacturers especially LG, I remember when they said the Optimus line would not get updated to Froyo or Gingerbread(think Gingerbread) because the devices couldn't handle it on Facebook, but they sent the update anyway.

Tell the whole story, if you are going to tell that much.
Not quite right. At FIRST LG said it wouldn't get an update, allegedly due to CPU limits. But within 24 hours LG had to reverse and PROMISE the Optimus would indeed get a 2.3 update because Google Android team said LG was full of bull that the CPU in the Optimus couldn't handle Gingerbread.
Who knows better, LG or the actual Gingerbread team?
And in fact all the 600 MHz CPU Androids STILL coming out (HTC, Samsung) show the LG Optimus (aka Optimus One to the rest of the world) can in fact handle Gingerbread 2.3. So, LG then promised it would, THEREFORE the "revised" Facebook/Twitter announcements were correct.
Metro discontinued the LG Optimus before the update could happen, then are now selling HTC, Samsung and upcoming ZTE Androids with the same/similar specs.
Metro: "You want Gingerbread? You gotta pay us for Gingerbread."
________
Metro did allow the Huawei Ascend to upgrade from 2.1 Eclair to 2.2 Froyo, but that's only because it was such a sucky phone, Froyo could only improve it and help sales. Plus, it was the only Android in like the whole world that launched during that time with ancient 2.1 Eclair instead of 2.2 Froyo. So, 2.2 just made it not be pre-historic at that point.
Metro won't do that again, I'm sure.
You want ICS? You'll have to pay for ICS.

If they ever do or encourage something that benefits the customers, there will be surely people supporting metro. In this case , if the do encourage us to pay for our own ics upgrade with fairly good affordable prices then we all happy and agree .

That's not really realistic thinking imho.
Show me one other carrier who won't throttle and/or charge for extra...zero, zip, zilch....
And someone who wants ics & belongs to modding community will likely not be very happy with someone else...unless if they have really deep pockets...but even then which carriers even allow unlimited & uncapped usage 'even if the customer is willing to pay whatever'?
The LG Esteem is a high-end 4G Android 2.3 phone from small carrier MetroPCS. It's a 4.3 inch device with a 1GHz processor inside. There's also 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 5 megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, an HDMI port... Read More
