Angry LG Camera quality?

Hey guys! I have a question! I bought my LG motion a month or so ago... when I bought it, the FIRST thing I did was root it!

However, as I began using the phone more often, I realized something...

The CAMERA quality is strange.. every picture I take is always kind of fuzzy. It's definitely NOT like the camera on the LG motion I tested out on the metro PCS store..

Here's an example of how the picture looks like on the stock camera app (with the highest resolution)

W/ HDR enabled..

Do you guys have any idea why it comes out so grainy?! Any fixes!?

ALSO, I'd appreciate it if you guys could upload/share a picture similar to mine from your cameras for comparison!

Thank you all!

Mine takes good pics all things considered.

If you're not taking portraits, make sure focus is set auto and not face tracking, and once you frame your shot, tap the area of the picture you want the focus on. When the square turns green, take the shot.

If you capture before the green square, the picture may be out of correct focus.

Yeah maybe try a picture with better light. At least upload a pic with better light so we can compare. I know some of my pictures are grainy because of low light situations.

Thanks for the replies you guys!

The lighting in my room is bright/fine. However, when I turn on the camera, the screen always "dims down", thus making my pictures look grainy/dim.. I've tried the tips you guys gave me.. still the same thing. =/

Do you guys think I have a defective camera or something? T__T This really sucks.

Try setting the flash to be on all the time, that might help. Also, make sure HDR setting is on. BTW, my camera works well.

Could be bad camera I suppose. I heard some people just get bad ones. Mine seems about the same really. Maybe I have bad one too, but I'm ok with it. Here are two pics. One of a sandwich that was in medium light and another of one of my orchids at night. I used the flash and I think it turned out pretty good.

And yes I'm a guy who enjoys growing orchids!

Regarding the OP's example.

Your picture is fairly grainy - suggesting the camera used its ISO 400 setting.

You can enable the white LED to act as "flash" and this works fairly well at very short ranges.

Since there was no supplemental lighting, camera shake may be an issue (just a little) as well as the lens shooting "wide open" thus having poorer imaging quality and less depth of field.

also... make sure your cover over the lens is CLEAN - perfectly so. Its easy for even a slight film or fingerprint grease to get the picture hazy

I took this photo of my friend running while I was riding my bike. I was bike support for her 20 mile run. I just point and shot, didn't want to crash or anything.

coming from the admire which had a 'real' camera button, I finally realized the main camera app doesn't AF unless it detects a face or you select a focus point. Once i figured that out I was much happier with the performance.

Are you rooted? Have you frozen any apps? Does Camera ICS or any other camera app from Play Store work?

This was mentioned in a review on this phone by pc mag i think. There is a lot of noise in low light conditions, outside is fine. Probabably a bug or a dodgy batch of sensors.

Also heard about faulty usb connections - sd card too.

lighting is huge when it comes to photography... not just how much, but the quality... for instance if out in the sun on a perfect day i would rather have a camera with a lower megapixel and no flash then inside a room with the lights on with a higher megapixel and a flash... the picture of the lady running looks good (it's outside, probably good lighting, etc.) the other pics don't seem to be in good light situations... try going outside on a sunny clear day and taking a picture. see how it looks...

Sorry I didnt have time to fish this out yesterday, your problem is covered here in the cnet review on page 2. I had posted this before concerning other bugs.

Buggy SD card, Computer Connection / poor speaker performance

Im guessing its an iso issue, i think it should be around 50-100 with lower light conditions, maybe this is one thing covered in the update, so try it again once your phone is updated. Otherwise it could be a faulty batch of sensors.

My phone also takes poor pictures without lots of light. Mine also puts a yellow tint on low light pictures.

Do the update, it appears photos have the noise removed. This is not possible with videos though, too processor intensive.

@pedro1977
The update didn't help. It turns out my phone had a mildly defective camera. I have a new LG Motion 4G now and the camera isn't great, but it's noticeably improved over the old one.

Only problem now is that this new one has a mildly defective screen, which does a little flickering thing sometimes (kind of like a crt monitor does). I think LG might be letting their quality control slide a little bit to make these phones so inexpensively.

Im not certain about the update. Unfortunately i didnt keep any old photos. I dont think the noise is much worse the that on the admire and that has a good sensor. Its a mixed bag with this device with regards to hardware choice/ quality. Photos attached.

You may have a hardware fault. Ive had this problem before, it was brightness app related. Reflashing cleared it

Same here - outdoor pics with natural lighting look good, but indoor pics tend to have a yellowish tint to them, even with good lighting and Flash enabled.

Indoor pics are also grainy.

Settings are as follows:

Flash: On
Brightness: +/- 0
Focus: Auto
Image Size: 5M (2560x1920)
Scene Mode: Normal
ISO: Auto
White Balance: Auto
Color Effect: None
Timer: Off
Geotagging: Off
Shutter Sound: Tone 1
Auto Review: On
Storage: Internal Storage

Any settings to fix or make indoor pics appear better?

A photographer friend of mine said most noise is an iso issue. I believe this is more to do with poor coding and choice of sensor.

My phone is unrooted and that's how pictures look indoors for me. Grainy, yellow, and ugly. I swear I think my old Huawei Ascend took better indoor shots.............anyways......outdoor shots are pretty good. The camera in general kind of sucks.

I did a little testing and setting the "White Balance" to "Fluorescent" on indoor shots results in more natural lighting, even though I'm not using Fluorescent light bulbs.

Unfortunately, after every shot the camera defaults back to "Auto" setting for "White Balance" resulting in yellowish tint to indoor pics using regular light bulbs and the LED Flash.

I wonder if there is a way to keep the White Balance menu set to "Fluorescent"

Feel free to give it a try and post your results.

My setting reverts back. Incandescents only came in the 2700k range, while florescents were from 2700-6500k, maybe there round the wrong way hence why the auto setting is not working. ill fiddle with it tonight and report back.

I have since tried it with 2700k lighting, setting it to incandescent produced the best result. Auto doesnt set to any of the four predefined options. This was with the flash off, if you add flash then you get a flash of 6500k light in the mix, making the incandescent option unsuitable.
